Well its been announced that Jeremy Corbyn is applying a three line whip to his MPs to make them support the triggering of article 50.

I admire Jeremy for this, it's an act of leadership, and it could save Labours bacon in the many Northern Brexit seats that they hold, so in that sense I am not entirely pleased because it will weaken UKIPs chances. It will also weaken Paul Nuttalls chances in Stoke.

What do the Bremain Labour supporters on GN feel about this?

It was a few years ago and we never seemed to get a bill - I have just checked and it does not apply at the weekend (which seemed to be a 'rush hour' to those of us who live in the sticks).
Because it took so long to get around the North Circular to visit DD, DH said he wanted me to guide him a different way home, he wasn't going on the North Circular ever again.

To be fair, when diesel cars were being encouraged, the knowledge at that time was that it was a good thing - was it to do with lower carbon emissions? Of course there were financial incentives - that's a way of trying to change behaviour. Do you remember the car scrapage scheme which gave an incentive to trade in cars over a certain age?

durhamjen Sat 18-Feb-17 17:08:42

Did you have to pay more than £10 for that, Jalima?

Nobody makes anybody buy a car. They might have persuaded people to buy a diesel car because the information at the time was that diesel was safer than petrol.

Jalima Sat 18-Feb-17 17:04:07

Small children and those babies/children in pushchairs are most vulnerable as they are just at exhaust level.

JessM Sat 18-Feb-17 16:41:16

saak at least you are up front about being a UKIP supporter.
Khan is right to be concerned about the health of Londoners - particularly young Londoners. 10,000 premature deaths caused by air pollution every year and hundreds of schools where children breathe filthy air.
Londoners are very fortunate in many ways. I believe that retired Londoners have free travel on public transport for instance. Everyone needs to do their bit about air pollution and should try not to indulge in driving or there will be need for more punitive measures. So use your fantastic public transport and stop whingeing!

Jalima Sat 18-Feb-17 11:08:55

Nobody in their right minds takes their car into the congestion zone let alone Central London if they can help it anyway!
No, they don't!

Unless, of course, they get lost and end up driving down 'Buses Only' Oxford Street in the rush hour (my fault, of course, for my poor navigational skills).

Jalima Sat 18-Feb-17 11:05:41

“It’s staggering that we live in a city where the air is so toxic that many of our children are growing up with lung problems,” Khan said. “The T-Charge is a vital step in tackling the dirtiest diesels.

I agree; however, this statement is also partially true and it was Gordon Brown who encouraged people to change to diesel cars, many of which date from then:
I remember the government making people buy diesel cars
I say partially because for making read give financial incentive to

I do agree that charging £10 per day for older cars which probably belong to poorer people is a rather stupid idea. Better, more affordable public transport is the answer - in fact free park and rides on the outskirts would be worth considering.

I don't think saak has been anywhere near the centre London for many years. Anyone who talks of 'driving from one end of London to the other' can't have any concept of the reality.Would it be OK saak for Mayor Khan to allow the poisoning of the London population and do nothing? Because it will be the ordinary people who will suffer the most, they are the ones pushing children in buggies, walking the pavements and riding bikes, as the rich sweep by in their limos.

suzied Sat 18-Feb-17 09:42:34

I find saak's description of Mayor Khan as a "twat" offensive. The air quality in London is toxic and he is trying to do something about it. You already have a £10 congestion charge and he is doubling that for older polluting diesel vehicles he also wants to phase out diesel buses. Doesn't go far enough in my opinion as a Londoner.

daphnedill Sat 18-Feb-17 07:17:35

What on earth does your son have to do with Article 50? Are you American, by the way?

There are plenty of opportunities for young people who don't want to go to university. Going to university isn't necessarily 'going into academia' anyway.

durhamjen Sat 18-Feb-17 01:18:25

Not heard of apprenticeships?

stillaliveandkicking Sat 18-Feb-17 01:08:22

Im lucky. My son is at uni doing a math degree. so many aren't. why aren't we investing in our kids that have something other than academia?

daphnedill Sat 18-Feb-17 00:36:27

What is a 'normal worker' anyway?

The majority of people of working age are workers. Normality is a relative concept, but I would imagine most of them think they're normal.

In case it's escaped your notice, saak, the UK hardly has any factories and mines. We don't have millions of people living in council houses breeding pigeons and wearing flat caps (apart from Paul Nuttall, of course).

Normal working people are just as likely to have degrees, work in offices and and service industries. Thatcher and Blair both recognised that. Leaving the EU will hit these people hard, just as it will the disabled, pensioners and those still working in remaining industries.

Your motivation for wanting to leave the EU to watch people sweat, trying to come up with a solution, and then laughing because a good outcome is impossible, is pathetic. It says a lot about you.

daphnedill Sat 18-Feb-17 00:26:13

Agreed MawBroon. Anybody with intelligence exceeding that of the average goldfish, who wants to drive from one end of London to the other, goes round the congestion zone.

stillaliveandkicking Sat 18-Feb-17 00:03:09

well sometimes they do. why should it be out of bounds. why should there be a charge to go from one end of london to the other. why should you be penalised to have a car over 10 years old. disgusting. i cant afford a new car. this is a bit weird and part of some sort of scheme to keep it elite or don't you think so?

MawBroon Fri 17-Feb-17 23:52:17

Nobody in their right minds takes their car into the congestion zone let alone Central London if they can help it anyway!

stillaliveandkicking Fri 17-Feb-17 23:43:34

I remember the government making people buy diesel cars. Now these people that run them are wrong.
I however have a normal car that runs on petrol, however its over 10 years old, so i need to pay 10 a day if my car is over 10 years old? really? this bloke is a twat.

durhamjen Fri 17-Feb-17 23:38:24

Being vegetarian, I feel discriminated against. Haven't bought fish and chips for over forty years.
Is that good or bad, being discriminated against by Paul Nuttall?

daphnedill Fri 17-Feb-17 23:29:31

Some people seem to have a massive chip on their shoulder. No wonder Paul Nuttall wants to make chips VAT zero rated. hmm

durhamjen Fri 17-Feb-17 23:13:52

It's about pollution.

Who should pay for pollution in London? People who never go anywhere near there?

'Drivers of older, more polluting cars will be charged an extra levy for entering central London from 23 October, the Mayor of London has announced.

Sadiq Khan said the £10 ‘Toxicity Charge’ would apply in the congestion charging zone typically to petrol and diesel cars registered before 2005.

“It’s staggering that we live in a city where the air is so toxic that many of our children are growing up with lung problems,” Khan said. “The T-Charge is a vital step in tackling the dirtiest diesels.”

The move comes two days after the European Commission issued the government with its “final warning” for breaching legal pollution limits.'

stillaliveandkicking Fri 17-Feb-17 22:35:29

we now have mr sadiqu khan telling us that he wants to bring in some sort of mad rule that any car over 10 years old going into the city will have to pay 10£ a day more, how stupid, out of touch with the normal worker is that! what it tell me is the city of london is for the "elite". really?

stillaliveandkicking Fri 17-Feb-17 22:12:26

All of these people that take us anywhere that isn't our war, no one attacked us, is stupid. Tony Blair was one of them amongst others. Leave people alone in their own country to fight their own wars whether it be civil or not.

Anniebach Fri 17-Feb-17 22:06:54

Was Iraq the last time we were involved in war?

merlotgran Fri 17-Feb-17 22:03:36

So Tony Blair wants us to 'Rise Up Against Brexit'

The last time we rose up was when he took us into Iraq and a fat lot of good that did us.

How insulting to people who believe in a democracy.
