The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 11:11:48

Only last year Trump blamed the Saudis for 9/11. They should be on the list. He has begun deals with the Saudi royal family since 9/11. He is a hypocrite.

We do not need to do deals with him. We will lose more status in the world by continuing with this line of special relationship. We will be laughed at.

Ana Sun 29-Jan-17 11:14:40

Oh, I thought we were aready laughed at by all the other EU members according to Remainers - what's new?

Another Trump principle bites the dust.

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 11:34:59

According to Brexiteers, the EU isn't the world, ana.

Ana Sun 29-Jan-17 11:37:17

It seems a rather shallow thing to be worried about - the fact that 'we will be laughed at'.

Parsleywin Sun 29-Jan-17 11:54:04

Maybe Trudeau will build a border wall in Canada and send the bill to Trump grin

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 11:59:19

Parsleywin, they tried that on the Last Leg. I seem to recall they got enough pledges to build the wall three bricks thick.

Has anyone linked to the petition against Trump’s state visit? petition.parliament.uk/petitions/171928
“Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US Government, but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen.” It’s growing fast.

Penstemmon Sun 29-Jan-17 12:01:48

If Trump does not need to worry about the size of the crowd at the inauguration why were there so many 'alternative truths' about it by him and his supporters? Why not say my supporters could not make it because they are all too poor to travel or not members of church communities etc?? You would have thought that the Republican Party would have provided busses!

I am aware of the issues he is tapping into to maintain control. I understand the need not to make all sections of society feel enfranchised/ heard etc. If I thought for one moment Trump cared an iota for all those people who feel ignored and unrepresented I might muster some positive thoughts about him.

He is a child of a multimillionaire not a poor boy made good!

Penstemmon Sun 29-Jan-17 12:03:34

Sorry.. a 'not' should have been deleted in my post!

I understand the need to make all sections of society feel enfranchised/ heard etc.

Sorry to lower the tone again. This picture wasn't on any news I saw. It's a Getty photo, so not photoshopped, I don't think.

Your link reminded me of the FAKE NEWS photo of Obamama with his hand Malania Trumps backside.

www.business2community.com/government-politics/barack-obama-touches-melania-trumps-backside-fake-photograph-01762447#lTPcfMR9A6u6HXXC.97

There are plenty of articles to show the same picture of Obamama with his hand on Malania back side when it was actually in the middle of her back.

Unlike the Guardians Steve Bell cartoon which was not a fake but below the belt, no pun intended.

I'm afraid I don't feel sorry for Teresa May for several reasons.
1. It's her job as PM to make links with other Leaders.
2. She wasn't voted in as PM and she agreed to stand for PM position so it was her own choice.
3. She could resign if the job isn't up to her liking.
4. She's making a mistake in my opinion to offer the NHS to Trump as some sort of desperate trading deal. The NHS is ours, the people's and she mustn't let it go without consulting us first!
5. I don't think she should be consorting with dictators! Bad move on her behalf to fly from US to Turkey to get post Brexit deals!

JessM Sun 29-Jan-17 12:38:35

Thanks for the link Toomuchcouchgrass I have signed, even though I think the Queen could probably cope. I suspect though she would rather not. One of her more arduous duties. The China visit was a challenge.

JessM Sun 29-Jan-17 12:41:24

Here's the link on the China visit for those who missed it.

Badenkate Sun 29-Jan-17 12:51:33

Petition signed toomuchcouchgrass. I'd actually like to ban him altogether, but at least let's prevent him from getting what he really wants - lots of pomp and circumstance and a visit to Buckingham Palace.

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 12:54:45

That's why I said it was a Getty image, POGS. It's by Christopher Furlong, one of their usual photographers. I knew somebody would argue about it.

If I were the Queen, I would plead a bad cold after Trump arrives so he has to be greeted by Charles.
Have signed it, by the way. It already has over a hundred thousand signatures, so due for a debate in parliament. Be good to see it get over a million.

toomuchcouchgrass Sun 29-Jan-17 12:56:30

Thanks petition signers. I thought it was a bit rough HM would be on the receiving end of the enormous protest demonstrations there are bound to be, just for TMay’s benefit. As well as being intensely unpleasant and awkward anyway.

Elegran Sun 29-Jan-17 12:58:19

But he is the legitimately elected head of state of a country which holds free elections! I am not sure that a petition to stop him meeting OUR head of state is likely to cut any ice.

She has met other heads of state and dealt with them - they go home thinking that she is the best thing since sliced bread, but she has their measure.

Ana Sun 29-Jan-17 13:01:21

Exactly, Elegran. This petition will just cause waves but won't actually achieve anything.

thatbags Sun 29-Jan-17 13:13:30

I hope this works. Here is a link to a Twitter thread explaining what questions presidential Executive Orders (EOs) should make you ask and what you can do to actively oppose them should you wish to.

You get other people's comments as well, which I was trying to avoid, just for ease of reading. The posts about EOs are by Tom Nichols.

thatbags Sun 29-Jan-17 13:15:08

Nichols' thread is aimed at US citicpzens, of course, but the questioning bit is useful for anyone who's interested, if only to take a bit of the sting out of them.

whitewave Sun 29-Jan-17 13:16:33

This is going to backfire for all sorts of reason s, not least because it can be used as propaganda by the enemies of America.

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 13:21:29

How do you know what the Queen thinks about the people she meets?
Have either of you read the petition?
It's gained 79000+ signatures in the past hour. One of the next trending one is this, on ringfencing the NHS from trade deals, in case anyone wants to sign that one, too.

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/178082

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 13:25:22

Fortunately, in the meantime, some US lawyers are opposing them, rather than reading Tom Nichols.
