This article in the Independent certainly gives food for thought, and puts things into perspective. It may explain a lot.

That should have read " they are all as mad as a box of frogs" sorry about typos

It's very difficult not to be afraid with Mr T as Potus. The psychological / psychiatric assessments were well known during the campaign, alongside which some of his behaviour towards women was well publicised.
The division in the US is alarming. It's hopeful to see so many people protesting and standing up against him but we shouldn't forget he can sack anyone who disagrees with him, including attorney generals.
His unstable, aggressive, reactive personality makes us all less safe than we were. Anyone who is still saying things like 'give him a chance, all the hot air during the campaign is irrelevant" needs to look to history.

It's all going to blow apart when some of his decisions are successfully challenged in the courts. Then we'll see exactly what he's like. Sooner or later he will blow up in public as he's said to do in private.

whitewave Tue 31-Jan-17 09:46:18

He'll just sack the judges. - job done grin

Anniebach Tue 31-Jan-17 09:52:12

As long as those who voted him in support him he is safe and they will keep supporting him as long as he co tinies his racists attacks. This is a country which still practised apartheid in the sixties

Anya Tue 31-Jan-17 09:58:14

He can't keep sacking people though, can he? Won't this in itself raise the question of his sanity?

Anya Tue 31-Jan-17 09:59:29

America is in for a rough ride when the good, the bad and the ugly thrash it out.

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 10:01:18

I'll get my cheroot and poncho ready.

Anya Tue 31-Jan-17 10:03:12

grin

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 10:03:23

On the question of sacking, anyone who goes publicly against their boss gets it.
Of course, if he has a big sacking spree right left and centre, that may be different.

Anniebach Tue 31-Jan-17 10:04:28

Sacking people who disagree with him will cause his supporters to think he is a strong leader who is making sure they are all safe and all wealthier . The far right is in power in America now

When I saw the news item of him signing the order implementing the banning of certain people, I was filled with foreboding.
His expression and the jabbing with the pen was not the action of a sane man and his signature was so long I wondered what it said.

MawBroon Tue 31-Jan-17 10:13:51

No, rosesarered , he is/was not her boss. She is a public servant and she is/was answerable to the American people.
If an Attorney-General cannot speak out on judicial matters what hope is there?
Do you think T May should sack the judges of the Supreme. Ours too?

MawBroon Tue 31-Jan-17 10:14:56

"Ours" = COURT. <sigh at predictive text>

whitewave Tue 31-Jan-17 10:18:13

ann "I am the greatest" grin

I don't think May can get rid of judges would it be Her Maj? Or is that another of her pretend powers?

ExaltedWombat Tue 31-Jan-17 10:26:21

We could probably pin one of the new-fangled 'diagnoses' on him, as we do with naughty kids.

Disgruntled Tue 31-Jan-17 10:27:35

He might implode.... but then.... Mike Pence..... groan. Hide.

Blinko Tue 31-Jan-17 10:50:19

I too fear that this man is mentally unstable. It looks as though little can be done whilst he maintains significant popular support. With such people in power, Heaven help us all. Worst case scenario, here we come....

GracesGranMK2 Tue 31-Jan-17 10:58:20

We could probably pin one of the new-fangled 'diagnoses' on him, as we do with naughty kids

Or we could go even further back and say it was down to witchcraft ExaltedWombat but generally most of us like to go forwards not backwards. "New-fangled", I imagine you are one of our very much older members!

Surely there are hundreds of intelligent people in the US establishment who are trying to work out how to get themselves out of this mess. Hopefully their constitution is like ours and the law is the highest power. I don't think there is anyone in England who can overturn a judgement of the Supreme Court - witness recent events. To be honest with the Brexit fiasco and with Trump, the establishment which got us into this mess needs to get us out of it! It needs to be remembered that Hilary Clinton won the popular vote and that only about 26% of Americans voted for Trump. What really happened was that the Democrat vote collapsed.

Those in power where others depend on their continued incumbency are rarely told the truth. They live in a bubble of flattery and lies and lose touch with any reality they might once have had. Dictators cannot be challenged as they will kill the critics and/or threaten the critics' families so they live in a complete fantasy world but it happens, I observe, to a lesser degree where the fleas live off the dog.

Trumpo has been long associated with narcissistic tendencies and now he has power a-plenty. However, as with Obama, the presidential authority only runs so far before it meets checks and balances as can be seen already in legal challenges and street protest.

If you look at the list of countries from which Trump has banned unchecked immigration you can see a seismic difference in the level of freedom between these rogue states and free, democratic America. Trump is not ISIS, nor Al-Shabab. He has never thrown anyone off a building for being gay or put a man in a cage and burned him to death for the cameras. It is these horrors he is trying to resist, albeit hamfistedly.

That is not to say I support Trump's actions. I don't think 'torture works' and it is also immoral and he has said some awful things about women.

The mass murderer Blair is still walking about smiling being a peace envoy, Clintons (both) are habitual liars Mrs May popped off to Turkey to sell fighter jets directly after meeting Trump. They are all mad and we are mad to put up with it.

Poor Queen has to meet with murdering despots all the time and somehow keep her sanity, let's not fall for the Trump being unusual line because he's not.

merlotgran Tue 31-Jan-17 11:27:07

I wonder how many assassination attempts there will be?

Liz08 Tue 31-Jan-17 11:37:07

I have started to watch The Celebrity Apprentice USA which is hosted by Trump (BB1 Sunday evening). It was recorded a few years ago before he publicly declared his intent to run for President. I know its a reality show and he always has in mind what makes 'good TV', but it's not scripted so I thought it might show some small insight into the working of his mind. I'll bet the CIA & FBI are watching old shows of his too ....... wink

phoenix, a bit late in the day, but if it was the same woman who was on Breakfast, DH and I watched in fascinated horror - she was really scary!!
