Has his halo slipped?

Is he really just the same as some of those other overpaid, rich celebrities who "do charity" on one hand and then take it directly away with the other by not paying his fair share of taxes?

I always thought that DB was one of the good guys and I am truly disappointed with what I have learned in the last few days.

karenc Thu 09-Feb-17 11:42:56

Absolutely, totally agree.

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 11:53:08

Having a knighthood has nothing to do with class .

Is bad language unusual in a male world such as football yet some are shocked by his swearing, he didn't swear in public , expect he picks his nose too

If a halo is placed on anyone this means they are expected to be a perfect human being , no such thing

sarahellenwhitney Thu 09-Feb-17 12:10:09

A modicum of intelligence and less greed then Mr Beckham may have obtained the ultimate ambition he had in his life as a celeb and I don't know about the ball but he must be 'kicking' himself.?

Nelliemaggs Thu 09-Feb-17 12:35:40

It looks as though he aimed for that halo in order to gain himself a knighthood. The halo is now round his knees and the knighthood presumably out of reach. I was disappointed, especially coming after we were happily surprised to find what a good guy George Michael was.
I hope he apologised to Katherine Jenkins, continues with the charity work and redeems himself.

Jalima Thu 09-Feb-17 12:40:59

Why not a furore about the theft of private emails? Is that not a crime?
Couldn't care less about what he has or hasn't said in private emails but I am against theft and making money from theft
Quite lilihu

Jalima Thu 09-Feb-17 12:43:50

I don't really understand why he should apologise to Katherine Jenkins because he said nothing to her personally, he just expressed a private view to someone else about her - many people may have done the same about any number of people.

It was a criminal hacker who published his emails when he or she did not get the blackmail money they wanted.
And they may have been tampered with and altered before publication anyway.

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 12:44:21

Theft of the emails isn't wrong, without them there could be no Beckham critcisms , this would mean a great loss to the world

Jalima Thu 09-Feb-17 12:44:55

I am not a great fan of the Beckhams, btw, but some of the vitriol directed towards him is astonishing.

Jalima Thu 09-Feb-17 12:47:30

Theft of the emails isn't wrong

Hacking emails is against the law and anyone found guilty is liable to receive a fine and imprisonment.

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 12:48:38

I agree Jalima, I am not a Beckham follower, but rather shocked that even his children have been criticised and being shocked that he swears? Pleeeease

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 12:54:07

No, it wasn't shock that he swears. That would be ridiculous! It was the coarse, crude swear words he used in the emails to his public relations office after his Knighthood block was revealed.

Your defence of DB is admirable, Annie, but you don't seem to know anything about the background story...

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 12:56:08

'Vitriol' Jalima? Where?

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 13:15:44

Ana, so he used coarse crude swear words in private , is that a reason for bringing his children into this ? Why critcise him as a father ? Why state he hasn't a modicule of intelligence ? I am not defending Beckham , I am posting my opinions on the vitriolic attacks , Jalima was right to consider them so.

He wanted a knighthood , didn't get one , perhaps he should have donated the money he does give to charities to a political party , that would have got him one

radicalnan Thu 09-Feb-17 13:28:26

These blasted rich buggers are all the same, putting on a show while manipulating and exploiting everyone else. They do 'charity work' really, not like the rest of us then, beavering away in charity shops or cooking lunch at the soup kitchen or manning the food bank, nope they jet off to some far flung place and and pick up kid up for a momentary hug or kick a ball about and everyone thinks they are marvellous.

Hype all hype I am afraid and the Beckham stink, she couldn't sing or dance and can't design clothes, he is a fair looking lad and a middling footballer, George Best he ain't.

People buy into all this nonsense about the family, personally I thought the relationship of their son and some young actress revolting, they are too young for all that exposure.

They all avoid taxes.........they are rich at our expense, Linekar is another creep and Lily Allen.........none of them intellectual giants..........but brilliant self promoters.

maddyone Thu 09-Feb-17 13:40:07

As I said before, David Beckham never had a halo for me. However, hacking email accounts is wrong morally and illegal.

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 13:41:39

Seems the fact they are wealthy is the cause of the anger , he was the son of s hair dresser and a kitchen fitter, he worked fir his money , not born into vast wealth

NannyMargaret48 Thu 09-Feb-17 13:44:20

Well said Kim 19. But you can be sure that the main culprits who indulge in personal comments and general nastiness on this website will not comment on your post. They will just ignore your voice of reason. There is a core of them on here. One thing is certain I would not want any of them looking after my grandchildren!!

Ankers Thu 09-Feb-17 13:45:16

Some good points there radicalnan.
No regular charity shop work or soup kitchen for him.

I am about to have to work alongside a high flier in his particular line of work[nowhere near the league of the Beckhams], and even though I have not met him much, I can see the idea of his game is to do as little of the day to day work that he can get away with, and delegate delegate.

Meanwhile, alarmingly, others around him think he is the most wonderful thing since sliced bread.. hmm

Witzend Thu 09-Feb-17 13:45:26

Can't say I ever particularly cared for him. Or her.

Quite frankly the thought of him ever getting a knighthood appalled me. Covered in tattoos and makes basic grammatical mistakes when speaking his own language...

If that makes me a snob, so be it, but I must stress that my feelings have absolutely nothing to do with his background or origins. There are plenty of people from humble origins - Alan Johnson for one - who to my mind would certainly grace a knighthood.

David Beckham has simply become very rich doing a vastly overpaid job he presumably enjoys, and if he's done charity PR, or donated to charity, I'm sure he's never been at all averse to the publicity, and I don't suppose for a moment that he's missed a penny of the money.

Ankers Thu 09-Feb-17 13:49:01

when I said his particular line of work, I meant the man, not db

Rigby46 Thu 09-Feb-17 14:14:54

Our common trait is being a gp Kim? Well apart from the fact that some of us aren't...

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 14:42:09

We can never have anyone with a knighthood who makes grammatical errors, that would be so beyond the pale. Let us insist anyone who is given a knighthood first faces a test on their grammer , we have our standards grin

Legs55 Thu 09-Feb-17 14:56:20

I'm one of the few who didn't actually think DB was a"great footballer", he was good but I've watched many better ones. Over the years I've increasingly lost patience with VB, I used to like her but now....

I'm not surprised they are making a "show" about their Charity work, I much prefer the ones like George Michael who quietly gave without shouting about their supporthmm

DB & GB are worth £?m, why can't they just donate anonymously like many othersconfused

gillybob Thu 09-Feb-17 14:57:15

I don't think being "overlooked" for a knighthood has much to do with his poor grammar or tattoos Witzend probably more to do with the fact that he was (allegedly) a long term member of a tax avoidance scheme that has been investigated by HMRC.

radicalnan Thu 09-Feb-17 15:00:23

I get told off all the time on here for my bad typing so there goes my civic award..........who would want one??? Really just a sign of the sycophant..........I meant to spell that wrongly, to ensure I never get one. See how my typing lets me down. Thanks to those who mail me privately with corrections by the way, great humanitarians every one of you.
