Has his halo slipped?

Is he really just the same as some of those other overpaid, rich celebrities who "do charity" on one hand and then take it directly away with the other by not paying his fair share of taxes?

I always thought that DB was one of the good guys and I am truly disappointed with what I have learned in the last few days.

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 15:03:28

Ha, ha - do they really, radicalnan? grin

What sad lives they must lead...

gillybob Thu 09-Feb-17 15:03:33

The B's are said to be worth around £500+ million (I have read) Legs55 I am not even sure they actually did donate any actual cash though (but happy to be corrected).

I don't think the fact that they are wealthy is cause for anger at all Anniebach The cause for concern (well mine anyway) is that he claims to do charity "work" and then used a tax avoidance scheme which is almost like giving with one hand and taking it away with the other.

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 15:03:33

I have no interest in football, so the fsct he wasn't a great footballer does cause me to wonder why he was captain of the England team for six years , perhaps it explains why England are crap , thry choose crap captains ?

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 15:07:42

He wasn't a 'crap' footballer, Annie, he just wasn't as good as some who went before him.

As for 'goldenballs'...not sure whether that's a comment on his game skills or his underwear modelling career!

gillybob Thu 09-Feb-17 15:08:06

grin radicalnan

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 15:09:02

Gilly, that is your reason, others are angry that he has made money, one thinks him of low intellect and kne thinks he shouldn't have a knighthood because he makes grammatical errors.

If you are not sure if he donated money to charity could it not be because he didn't speak of it? Can't win can he, he speaks of his charity work and is attacked , he remains silent and it is assumed he doesn't give money to charity so is attacked

gillybob Thu 09-Feb-17 15:09:55

He was a good footballer but by no means one of the best. (Imvho)

what do I know about football I support Newcastle United

gillybob Thu 09-Feb-17 15:15:56

I respect him (and anyone else) for making money from nothing Anniebach I do not necessarily respect those who are born into it though. I do not respect him (or anyone else) for alleged tax avoidance.

As for anyone saying he shouldn't get a knighthood for being poor at grammar/being of low intellect etc. that is just plain ridiculous.

Half the bloomin' pop stars/actors etc. wouldn't have titles either if they had to sit an exam first.

amt101 Thu 09-Feb-17 15:16:33

I've never understood why people with squillons of pounds that they can never spend totally don't want to pay their tax. The poor average Joe and Jo don't have any choice.
I find the honours system is totally abhorrent. Few of the recipients do their work altruistically unless it's those that get the lesser honours. Most of the others are totally driven.

gillybob Thu 09-Feb-17 15:20:53

Me either amt101 its as though £200 million (or whatever) isn't enough so "we need to find ways of keeping more more more" Greed at it's worst. As you say most of us have no choice.

nigglynellie Thu 09-Feb-17 15:32:14

Do people really pm you radicalnan with helpful hints about spelling and grammar?!!!! Surely not! If so, I hope you remind them of their lack of rudimentary manners, and that they are patronising #####s!!
The whole honours system needs binning imo! It's archaic rubbish and never seems to go to people who really deserve recognition i.e. over and above the call of duty. Who on earth would want a knighthood? unless you're completely pissed with importance!

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 15:33:38

And even if you did have a choice, you would of course Do the Right Thing anyway would you not gillybob? As would I.

(just pre-empting anyone who might think otherwise, you understand! wink)

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 15:36:48

I can't understand the apparent desperation to be given a Knighthood either.

minxie Thu 09-Feb-17 16:18:23

I think if the last Dambuster is ignored in the honours list for a knighthood ( and he deserves it more than anyone) why would a ball kicker get one. Lots of people do charity work and don't expect a knighthood

phantom12 Thu 09-Feb-17 16:19:27

I hope his halo has slipped. I have never been a fan of his and especially not a fan of his wife. Imagine her being called a lady, how awful that would be!

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 16:21:53

Ana, there could be several reasons why he wants the knighthood.

He is arrogant and thinks he is worthy of a title

He has been mocked for years on his poor grammer , lack of education, so perhaps for him a title would make up for this, he has always come across as having low self esteem.

His wife wants a title .

I have no idea why but cannot dismiss it as pissed with importance

Reminds me of the actor Eric Morley who claimed he refused a knighthood because it could result in his fish increasing in price

Kim19 Thu 09-Feb-17 16:30:04

Thank you, Rigby46. I really did not know that. Changes my whole concept........

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 16:56:22

Annie. I certainly did not say DN wa 'pissed with importance'. Not the sort of phrase I would ever use...hmm

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 16:56:45

DB, sorry!

nancan Thu 09-Feb-17 17:13:10

Beckham is pissed off annoyed that Katherine Jenkins got an OBE and all she'd done was sing. She'd taken drugs in the past whereas he, Golden Balls has always been so innocent, and does such good work didn't he at least deserve a knighthood? OMG Sir David and Lady Victoria Beckham, making them even more important than they think they are!

merlotgran Thu 09-Feb-17 17:28:43

Katherine Jenkins got her OBE for services to music and for her charitable works. Looking at her Wikipedia entry I'd say it was well deserved.

Sour grapes will not get DB a knighthood even if he was ever in line for one. He should have known that venting his spleen in an e-mail was an extremely foolish move. Once something is in writing you can't deny it.

Elrel Thu 09-Feb-17 17:45:10

Since Jimmy Sovile had a knighthood they are already devalued.
It's the people who refuse 'honours' who are most deserving of respect imho.

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-17 17:46:13

Ana, I did not say you had said that , I quoted other posters

nigglynellie Thu 09-Feb-17 18:10:47

It was I who said ' who on earth would want a knighthood unless you're completely pissed with (self) importance'. Sorry if it caused offense.

mrsmopp Thu 09-Feb-17 18:20:20

I think there's something wrong with our sense of values when David Beckham and others end up with multi millions of £££. He hasn't saved any lives, he hasn't discovered a cure for cancer, he has kicked a ball around a field for heavens sake.
