I agree, Welshwife, but it's only in this country that owning a house is seen as a right.
Maybe if house prices come down, there will be more incentive for landbankers to sell land back to councils for building more council houses. I don't think that came into the thinking of whoever wrote that in Maizie's link.

Also, if house prices drop, many struggling young families will find themselves locked into negative equity. I agree durhamjen, more social housing needs to be built by councils and housing associations, without the right to buy being part of that.

I appreciate it djen ( if house prices stop going up like rockets) it's time that they at least stabilised, even if they don't come down.Why on earth should Leavers think any differently to Remainers on this question? In my little corner of the country, house prices are eye watering.

I am a great believer in Social housing and also think Councils should be allowed to have their own stock and go back to having a team of men to carry out the maintenance and repairs. These systems also gave apprentices where youngsters were taught all the relevant skills. Are housing Ass. Run in the lines of a nonprofit making charity or are they just more private companies - don't want to google as cooking dinner!

Housing Associates were non profit making charities. I don't know how this can be sustained if the right to buy is imposed on them.

The bungalow I was living in was council owned, the fire alarm went wonky at a weekend, a chap turned up to fix it he he had driven from Birmingham, oh for the days when councils employed painters,carpenters. Plumbers etc. Locals had work, no waiting for an electrician to drive from Birmingham

The point is that this is the government and will directly affect our lives.

Tories also being accused of fiddling their election expenses, and fighting like rats in a bag over the issue.

It isn't just low pay but hours too. You may get a job above the basic income - or even just above - at a supermarket but you will be lucky indeed if it is full time; the maximum on offer will probably be 30 hours. Even two basic wages x 30 hours is going to make it difficult to care for and bring up a family and almost certainly impossible to buy a house.

With the Tories unable to work out how to run an economy and running around like headless chickens, I just wonder where the money is going to come from not only to pay for Care but also to help all those who may be in work but are not able to earn enough to live even reasonably properly.

The minimum needed as we enter such a difficult and turbulent period, is a government that we can trust to run a competent economy, able to pursue sensible and intelligent diplomatic negotiations and give at least some semblance of actually knowing what they are doing.

So far they have failed at every point.

It's shocking what is going on in the food retail sector gracesgran I was talking to a union person about it. It's easier to rota if you have your staff on 20-30 hours and don't have to give a full weeks work. Also it suits them if there is high turnover so they don't get to earn things like maternity leave (have to stay 2 years to get that).
So the philosophy is - employ them on 20-30 hour contracts and they will leave as soon as they can get a full week somewhere. Unscrupulous. Meanwhile the public purse has to help support these families via various in-work benefits.
