"The police service is in crisis because of the cuts. They're being dragged from pillar to post. We hear talk of extra police officers on the streets. They're not extra. They're police officers who've had their rare leave days cancelled, they've had their 12 hour shifts, that are now routinely extended to 16 hours, they're being drawn from other areas."

I thought Corbyn was suspending electioneering (and that includes speeches) for today out or respect.
That didn't last long then.

I think you will find that TM did a bit of electioneering of her own outside No. 10 and took advantage of her position to break that agreement.

I guess the problem is that Theresa May obviously had to make a statement this morning but that did come across as electioneering even if it was unintentional. I believe that the Corbyn statement wasn't released until after 7 o'clock. At the end of the day, given the fact that we're so close to the brexit negotiations plus the fact that there are so many awful things happening at the moment it really isn't a very sensible time to have a general election is it and it's hard not to question the reason for Theresa May to do so.

It lasted until May made her speech on the steps of No 10 Maw, when she decided to say much more than she had to and make it an election speech.

As it was Corbyn's speech was not given until the evening as agreed between the parties (you can see the embargo time at the top). So Corbyn stood by the agreement but May did not. Perhaps a little truth helps us see who made the agreement last.

May is desperate to hang on to the UKIP voters and that was almost certainly her reason for making the speech she did and also for puffing herself up by taking to the lectern on the steps of No 10. I don't think we have ever seen a PM do this so often. A speech calmly made inside No 10 would seem to me to be much more appropriate.

Good God, is there no thread on GN that cannot be taken over by petty electoral politics.

This was a dastardly attack by evil minded people who got their just desserts. All over the world, if the victim descriptions are to be believed there are families mourning or worrying about family members who have been injured or killed. Even the political parties have said they would suspend campaigning today.

Surely for one day we could just think of the victims, praise the swiftness of the police response, think about the wider issues and stop all this JC/TM discussions about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. It adds nothing to the sum human knowledge and reduces all those who suffered to political pawns in an election battle. They deserve better than that.

The Red Cross were collecting for London at the concert.
