Luciana Berger who is chair of the Jewish Labour Movement was re-elected in Liverpool with a majority of nearly 33,000

Momentum activists took nine of ten positions in the LP, one new official has said Berger is now answerable to us!

I thought an MP was answerable to her constituency

And can soften people up for the Rees-Moggs of this world.

There's already a de-selection/Momentum-bashing thread but,to those who are presenting members of Momentum as if they are the devil incarnate, here's a repeat of what I said on it:

I actually went to a Momentum meeting for the first time the other day to see if the stories about these rabble-rousing young hooligans was true.

In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to find that of the people there - about 80 or so I would think - I would say at least 65% were aged 40 and above. I met a member of my choir there - a former Health Visitor who in retirement has campaigned tirelessly for our local hospital. I did not see any of the sort of dirty deeds that the right wing tabloid press likes to talk about. The discussion was mostly about seeking the opinions and suggestions of people within the borough in order to take on board the local and national issues that are of importance to them.

Labour Party members and supporters sometimes voted for candidates with whom, as individuals, they disagreed. An exsmple is the Labour candidate who sent a letter to voters encouraging them to elect her “whatever your misgivings about the Labour leadership” - because she expected Corbyn would not become prime minister. I think many Labour members voted Labour despite this woman, not because of her, and it is hardly surprising that people who have constantly tried to undermine an elected leader - even during an election - don't inspire confidence and aren't particularly popular.

The reason the right wing press is demonising Momentum is because they can see it is effective. Had it been a small movement that generated no interest and posed no threat to the Conservative machine, they would have either ignored it or had a fleeting snigger about it.

What comes over on all the political threads is the reaction of left wing posters to try and close down discussion......when others are criticising something 'of the left'
( in this case Momentum) when many Labour voters are worried about Momentums methods. So, we get comments like 'I went to a meeting and found them all lovely' ( well, you would, wouldn't you) or trying to counter comments about Momentum with ( ridiculously) complaints about the names of Rees Moggs children.Ooh, look, he's a toff, he gives his children posh funny names.etc.
In behaving this way, posters are emulating Momentum.Nobody must be a critic of their ways, all must toe the line at all times or there will be consequences.
We should all be critics where we see that it's deserved, of any Party or group within a Party or an individual ( but not because their child is named Sixtus or because they live in a large house.)

durhamjen Sat 08-Jul-17 08:39:25

How do you know anyone is emulating momentum?
Have you been to any meetings?

durhamjen Sat 08-Jul-17 08:40:36

Some of us are worried that the Tories want Moggmentum to be the next PM.
Is that allowed in your world, roses?

Anniebach Sat 08-Jul-17 08:42:29

Bringing up The naming of a Tory MP's child on a thread discussing Momentum was a diversion? Surely not !

Baggs Sat 08-Jul-17 08:45:09

Hear, hear, roses. Philosophical Labour people have always criticised things within the Party as well as political stances outside it that they disliked. I grew up surrounded by such people. It strengthens the Labour movement rather than weakening it. It is only weakness that fears criticism.

rosesarered Sat 08-Jul-17 08:47:15

durhamjen....... you may ( and do) criticise the Conservatives generally or any individual MP within it, and Rees Mogg is no exception, and we are all free to do that about any political party or MP, one of the glories of living in a free democratic country.

Baggs Sat 08-Jul-17 08:48:12

I think it's possible to make some assessment of Momentum without going to any meetings. Have you been to any Tory Party meetings, jen?

Baggs Sat 08-Jul-17 08:48:48

roses, I admire your stamina.

Baggs Sat 08-Jul-17 08:49:49

His daughter's called Mary, btw. A good Catholic goddess kind of name. Go, Mary!

rosesarered Sat 08-Jul-17 08:49:53

grin well, have just had a holiday!

Baggs Sat 08-Jul-17 08:50:24

grin

Anniebach Sat 08-Jul-17 08:51:38

Always have done Baggs, but since Momentun took over the party this has changed, hit list, de-selection etc, all momentum's new party,

Baggs Sat 08-Jul-17 09:00:42

New wave Militant Tendency is how I see it, annie. sad

sunseeker Sat 08-Jul-17 09:03:51

I know you are all interested in facts and not rumour so can I clarify a couple of inaccuracies about Rees-Mogg.

He did not take his nanny on his campaign - this was a lie put about by a desperate Labour candidate.

He has not received a grant to renovate his family home. A building once owned by his wife's grandfather is now owned by a charity. That charity has received a grant to renovate it as they and the local authority want to turn it into a tourist attraction.

durhamjen Sat 08-Jul-17 09:06:28

But he did vote to cut disabled people's money by £30, didn't he?

petra Sat 08-Jul-17 09:07:03

All these jibes and sneers at the likes of Rees-Mogg and others is no more than inverted snobbery, simple as.

Anniebach Sat 08-Jul-17 09:08:04

It is Baggs, and Corbyn started the campaign to bring them back into the party since the eighties .

sunseeker Sat 08-Jul-17 09:08:29

dj I am not attempting to defend Rees-Moggs voting record I merely wanted to rectify some misinformation
