I'vs just seen this tweet by Associated Press (@AP):
"BREAKING: The Trump administration will let more employers opt out of providing no-cost birth control for religious, moral reasons."
What I don't 'get' is what employers have to do with their employees' birth control. Is it to do with medical insurance?

Because of the age span of women on here, our experience of contraceptive provision in the UK will have been different.
Before 1974, it was not part of the NHS. As adaunas described, you could go to a charitably funded family planning clinic, where you were asked to contribute what you could afford, some local authorities provided free family planning, and some GP s would do a free consultation ( they were not obliged to), but you had to pay privately for the prescription. This was then all brought under the NHS for free.
Of course those who felt it a completely private matter could make their own arrangements or pay privately, as I gather some of the posters on here did.
Most 'western democracies ' enable contraceptive advice to be provided free or at minimum cost, through various systems, regarding it as a matter of public health. We know that the US does things differently!

I could not have afforded a private prescription (for the pill) in 1969 when I first started taking it. My flat mate got it from her Dr in 1968.
I was working in women's health back then and remember the patchwork of provision very well. We were planning to move to an authority that did not have free provision, and I got the chance to take part in a drug trial. The free pills carried me through to 1974!
Obama, good looking! Well they do say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, maryeliza54. You won't hear anything bad said about the Obamas if you get your news from the BBC, of course. If you get your news more widely you'll hear that he cared more about playing golf then being President, skirted issues about his religion, staff thought his wife was a b*tch and the elder daughter thinks she's someone important and parties too hard with the cannabis crowd- depends on your sources, of course.
Let's have a look at Mr Trump. He doesn't smoke, drink or take drugs, is only taking a token $1 annual salary during his time in the White House and, yes, he doesn't think women should kill their unborn babies. What a party pooper that man is! He has said inappropriate things about women. Like a lot of millionaires he thinks young women who are impressionable and eager to be in their company are easy that is probably true in a lot of cases, I'm afraid. Show me a man who has never said anything derogatory about a women and I'll show you a liar. However, in my experience, it is actually other woman who speak ill of other woman but that's by the by.
Yet people would still rather have Hillary with her sleezy husband, Mr Bill ' I never had sex with that woman, judge' Well, why was your sperm all over her dress then, Mr president!' Clinton. He seemed very keen for his wife to get into the White House so he could continue to have more of the same, I expect, but hey I'm sure a woman who allowed her husband to humiliate her in front of the whole world would have made a great President.
He thinks it's appropriate to grab women by their genitals. Do you really think that man respects any women?
Well where to start. I get my news from a variety of sources. What about you? Sounds like Fox to me. You do realise that DT has spent a huge amount of time playing golf so far this year don't you? He can afford not to take a salary - partly because he doesn't pay his fair share of tax - what happened to his promised tax return? You know he was a leading light in the disgusting Birther movement - or wait a minute, you believe all that as well? He doesn't just say inappropriate things about women, he thinks it's fine to grab their pussies. You clearly know some pretty awful men if all the men you know say derogatory things about women.
He believes that there are 'good people' who happen to be NAZIs.
He thinks it's OK to deport children who have never lived anywhere else in their lives.
He thinks it's OK to leave 20 million American people without access to free/subsidised healthcare.
He thinks it's OK to tar all Muslims with the same brush.
Ditto all Mexicans.
He thinks it's OK to cut welfare from the poorest Americans in order to give massive tax cuts to the incredibly rich.
Feel free to explain to me how any of these statements show him to be a good President.
Good post vampire
Putting aside the differences between Trump and Obama,
Not all Americans like Obama because they hoped for much much more from him and he didn’t /couldn't manage to deliver.Trump may well have the same problems.
The US system of healthcare is nothing like our model, Obamacare was not universally liked, it seemed ok to us, but that’s because we are not American citizens, and they do things differently.
Baggs from what I have read, yes, you have the sitation correct.
Yes I rather think that we know the US system is different, thank you. Obamacare is not universally disliked either. But either way, DT's latest decision re contraception is misogynistic and wicked.
I dare not say what I think of Trump, as I daresay I would be banned from Gransnet.
Excellent posts, Vampirequeen & Rhinestone and others in a similar vein. That's how I feel, too.
It's strange to me that all these anti-contraception/termination people suddenly lose interest in those very same children once they are born and would deny them healthcare and indeed their very lives, on the altar of guns.
Well said SueDonim.
Exactly SueDonim. If they spent more time making life better for children instead of pushing more and more of their families into poverty, I might have more understanding of these people's views on abortion and contraception.
radicalnan I am finding it difficult to reconcile your words "a woman's right to murder" with your previous post on Tue 18 Jul 2017 at 18:15:48, where you said "Terminations are done with the best of intentions, mine was to prioritise the children I already had, I have no idea why other people chose the same solutions but I do know that like me, they did not do it lightly and without suffering."
Yes Maryelizayou are spot on about that. And by the way T and his congress allowed a budget to expire that funded health insurance for poor children.
First of all no one in the world is a saint. And we don’t know what goes on behind anyone’s close doors. What Hillary and her husband decide is none of our business . They went to counseling and she made a decision maybe not all of us would do. Her decision had nothing to do with politics. She won the popujar vote. Our electoral college IMO is archaic and needs to go.
Women who are poor can not afford children nor birth control if their employer decides they won’t allow the insurance company to pay for it. So it’s okay to have these children born to poor people who have to put them in foster care or up for adoption. That system is stressed itself with little money.
QuizqueenIm not sure what station you are watching but Ibama always said he was Christian and never calked his wife that name. And the daughter doesn’t think she’s better than anyone. She’s a normal daughter who was doing stupid kid stuff. Ever hear of what the Bush twins did sneaking out of the White House?
