Hope this is not “fake news” but relief from the endless speculation.
Good luck to them! ??

I'm really not sure maryeliza . The person I know tells me that they get billed every quarter for the policing of a radius around the ground. Several hundred thousands it is too. Also "apparently" (from my contact) the policing of football and other such events often attracts enhanced overtime rates too.

I bet if someone else is paying it will attract enhanced overtime rates - but then part of me thinks, given what Premier footballers are paid.......

Police can only charge for policing on "land owned, leased or controlled by a club". Therefore the public streets around the ground and further afield (around pubs etc.) has to policed out of public funds.

Does it really matter?! Do any of us really care?!! For me this thread has run its course, so will leave you all to ponder upon accents, money, marriage/divorce, baby names and other such perplexities!

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 15:42:20

Bye

lemongrove Wed 29-Nov-17 16:18:46

Are you leaving already maryeliza ? What a shame when you were enjoying this thread so much.

lemongrove Wed 29-Nov-17 16:20:54

Merlot according to some sources, nobody does a ‘harrumph’ like Princess Anne ( apart from the late Princess Margaret.)

gillybob Wed 29-Nov-17 16:22:11

Oh I thought it was niggly who was leaving not maryeliza confused

gillybob Wed 29-Nov-17 16:23:54

What exactly is a "harrumph" lemon? is it a fart?

lemongrove Wed 29-Nov-17 16:25:41

Well, who knows? I should think we will all be leaving this thread pretty soon anyway ( or will it run until the wedding?)

lemongrove Wed 29-Nov-17 16:26:29

No gilly it’s a harrumph! tchgrin

merlotgran Wed 29-Nov-17 16:27:57

It's a well bred snort. grin

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 16:32:45

Bye was for niggly but I rather think you knew that?

BlueBelle Wed 29-Nov-17 16:35:21

Blimey I m sure I can see a bubbling black cauldron with lots of bats and cats and cackling going on around it

jura2 Wed 29-Nov-17 16:35:35

Of course we are happy for them and wish them all the best. And yes, it is wonderful to have good news and a break from the misery, incuding Brexit...

and yet - 28 minutes of the BBC news were devoted to the engagement - whilst it totally ignored the fact that David Davis is in contempt of our Parliamentary Democracy. So is it really cynical to believe that this is deliberate- and shows that the BBC's strings are being pulled?

We all know about the DM, and its front page- and who pulls the strings there (and increasingly, why) - but yes, some f us do expect better from the BBC.

Baggs Wed 29-Nov-17 16:36:34

Has nobody else's accent changed a bit during their adulthood? Mine has. So has that of my brother who has spent nearly all his adulthood in the States. I don't think anyone could tell from our accents where my four siblings and I grew up or where we went to school. Education, and living away from where you grew up (being "anywheres") does that.

Kate must mix with a lot of plummy speakers. It's bound to have an effect. Last time I heard her on a recording where she was speaking up for a charity, she sounded stiff and precise (nervous? I would be) rather than plummy.

Those deriding the way she speaks are guilty of reverse snobbery in my opinion.

Baggs Wed 29-Nov-17 16:37:27

I think everyone expects better from the BBC than we sometimes often get, jura2.

annsixty Wed 29-Nov-17 17:22:42

When interviewed yesterday and asked about the engagement Kate spoke exactly as Baggs said, stiff and precise and certainly less than gushing.
She has some competition at last.

soop Wed 29-Nov-17 17:36:17

Sigh................Yawn...........Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 17:36:51

Agreed ann I couldn’t believe how false and stilted she sounded and then Camilla came out with that claptrap about good news in a sea of bad things - yes like freezing benefits yet again announced minutes after the engagement.

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 17:37:48

Well soop you can just go back to the kitchen and leave us to it.

Overthehills Wed 29-Nov-17 17:38:26

Oh dear - my accent has definitely changed over the years and I’m sure I could be accused of “putting it on” by people from “home”. But I, equally definitely, have never tried to change and I love to hear my compatriots. I even trust them more! Geordies the same! Something “real” about them. But all DH’s relatives are plummy and I guess it’s rubbed off. wink

soop Wed 29-Nov-17 17:43:07

Thanks for the suggestion, maryeliza54. I'm orf!

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 17:45:00

Well soop if you’re bored and fed up with a thread, it’s a bit odd to want to hang around isn’t it?

merlotgran Wed 29-Nov-17 17:50:44

I noticed quite a few of the presenters were poshing up their accents as the news reports came pouring in.

One of them definitely referred to the Queen's Norfolk estate as Saaaaaaaandringham. grin
