Is this young woman a terrorist?

Who am I?

I am a Palestinian girl.

Before I was born, the occupation took most of my village’s lands to build a new settlement called Halamish.

Then they arrested my father. When my aunt went to visit him, one of the soldiers pushed her over the stairs of the court and she died.

Since I was little the settlers of Halamish keep stealing more and more of our lands to expand the settlement.

Our home has demolition order because it is in Area C. The settlers are allowed to build on our land, but not us.

In 2005, the settlers made the spring of our village part of the settlement and prevent us from using it, even though many of us are farmers.

All these things happened with great support from the Occupation army and government.

When the people of the my village started to resist the injustices with protest marches, my father was arrested again.
My mother was arrested too. My uncles, aunts, brothers, cousins - all of them were arrested too.

My cousin Mustafa was killed by the Israeli army. My uncle Rushdi was killed by the army too!

Later, an Israeli sniper shot my mom in the leg and she couldn’t move for long time.

Almost every week, the army breaks into our homes to arrest one of my family or to confiscate our laptops or phones.
During our marches, they shoot us with tear gas rubber bullets - my cousin is in hospital badly injured because he was shot in the face the week before.

A few days ago, two soldiers came to our house to take positions to shoot at the demonstrators from my village. I stood with my family to prevent them, the soldier pushed me and I slapped him.
And now I am in jail!
My mother and my cousin are in jail too!
The occupation government and media call me a terrorist.
Do you know who I am?

And what would you do if that was your life? Or the life of your child?

So the right is all on one side and the wrong all on the other? I don't think so. The world isn't like that and I see so many people who are delusional and blind to facts and evidence and who are prejudiced in their outlook in day to day life to take this story at face value.

When I started reading the narrative I was horrified and then it quickly became apparent from other posts that the original commenter was not as straight as she seemed.

It l;ooks as if Gransnet has been hooked by Fake News.

Here’s a video of the girl, Ahed Tamimi, slapping and kicking a soldier, who does not retaliate. The soldiers were there to stop a violent riot following the announcement that the US was moving its embassy.

According to the Jerusalem Post, her family have a record of using their children to try to provoke Israeli soldiers. One of her cousins was convicted of directing a terrorist attack on a Jerusalem pizza restaurant in 2001 in which 15 people died and 130 were injured. Most of them were children and young mothers.

Blueskies
The Palestinians are receiving aid and shipments of Arms from other muslim countries notably Iran who have publicly stated their desire to murder all Jews and raze Israel to the ground. So, for the sake of their religion, they would destroy the only successful democracy in the Middle East, the only country providing jobs and a good living, healthcare and education to its people. A substantial percentage of Israelis are muslims and I don't think they are rushing to join their "brothers" anywhere else, anytime soon.

HannahLoisLuke Thu 04-Jan-18 14:41:05

Jura2 is not the child in the story but someone telling her story. I have sympathy with the Palestinians but I'm afraid that their way of handling the Israeli encroachment, and that is surely what it is, does not earn them sympathy around the world. I remember thinking, at the time of 9/11 this will go on and on until Palestine has a homeland. Everything is just getting worse and worse. The whole of the Middle East is a tinder box. I don't know the answer, do any of you?
Just look at a map of Palestine pre 1948 and compare it to now!

Carolpaint Thu 04-Jan-18 15:05:42

Let us face it, if Israel razed what is left of Palestine killing every Palestnian, after a bit of hand wringing the rest of the world would do nothing. Aid goes to both Israel and Palestine. The ratio of Israeli deaths and Palestinian is roughly 1 Israeli to 10 Palestinian. I am sorry that fairness and UN resolutions are ignored.
Trump is advised by an Orthodox Jew, Jared his son in law, his favourite daughter converted, so say goodbye to any peace settlement. His decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel makes it clear where his and the USA's allegiance is.

OldMeg Thu 04-Jan-18 15:08:15

The mistake was creating the state of Israel in the first place. Yes, I can understand the knee jerk reaction after the atrocities of WW2, but to simply annex land and create a new state means someone else has lost.

The fact is the ‘Promised Land’ was lots to the Jewish Nation a very long time ago.

It was inevitable that this tinder box situation would be the result, but hey ho! we Brits (and others) just love interfering in other nations politics and boundaries. Colonialists to the core.

Jaycee5 Thu 04-Jan-18 15:15:01

It didn't take long for accusations of anti-Semitism to be made. Israel is the only country in the world above criticism because to criticise is to be anti-Semitic. Funny how it is possible to criticise African countries without being racist or Islamic countries without being Islamaphobic.
There is no excuse for the soldiers' presence there. They were not invited by the Palestinian authorities and so were trespassing.

Amber37 Thu 04-Jan-18 15:42:07

How sad that this wonderful forum has been hijacked for political purposes. Jura 2's post has been written by a native English speaker and therefore there are doubts of its authenticity. Is this the start for people to start writing hate mail or having a hidden agenda? If I wanted political arguments I would use a different platform. I'm surprised that the moderator (if there is one) has allowed the original post. I'm bowing out of Granset.

After the first world war with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Britain became the ruling power in this area of the Middle East. In 1948, the whole idea was to create two states, one called Israel and the other Palestine. Unfortunately, after its creation Israel was almost immediately attacked by other Arab states making the creation of Palestine impossible, although it was very much desired by the Palestinians at the time. Sadly any attempts to rectify this situation over the years have been fruitless, leading us to where we are today, that is hardened positions on both sides seemingly impossible to breach.

"And now I am in jail!"

Careless of the authorities to give her access to the internet.

Perhaps if the OP identified themselves we could offer an opinion.

starstella Thu 04-Jan-18 16:59:38

I DON'T TRUST THIS POSTER.HOW ON EARTH IS SHE ALLOWED ACCESS TO THE INTERNET IN JAIL? IT JUST DIDNt RING TRUE TO ME.

CarrieTaylor Thu 04-Jan-18 17:01:16

Amber37
Bless your words!
I am following right behind you.

durhamjen Thu 04-Jan-18 17:06:00

How strange, Amber37.
How long have you been on GransNet?

Elrel Thu 04-Jan-18 17:23:17

Wake up - Jura is simply drawing attention to this young woman’ s story in an eyecatching way. She’s not pretending to be her, just publicising her plight.
Amber and others banging on about antisemitism - are you aware of the organisation ‘Jews against Zionism’. It does exist!
Consider the facts them make up your own minds about this horrible situation. Don’t forget the young footballers killed on the beach by Israeli shells. Or the toddler shot by the Israeli army while holding the hand of his 6 year old brother. I suspect they weren’t terrorists.

jura2 Thu 04-Jan-18 17:29:27

Been out all afternoon- thanks Elrel and others- I did assume that as a very long standing on GN, it would be clear to all that I was not 'the girl' (unlike many here, when I did leave and rejoin, I used a name that would be immediately recognised to all). I'd also assumed that all would have heard of this case, via TV, papers or other media.

And all of a sudden several posters appear whose names I've never ever seen here- bizarre.

This post was meant to follow the discussion on another thread about Mandela and other famous terrorists - the question being, if you have no access to political solutions and a vote - how do you fight extreme oppression. Mandely did regret some of the violence- but what on earth were they supposed to do?

jura2 Thu 04-Jan-18 17:32:02

Those who teach violence are surely those who dish it out- take people's lands, farms, foods, water and raise their villages to the ground and humiliate them day in, day out- and beat them, beat their kids, and shoot them if they don't obey? I'd say.

silverlining48 Thu 04-Jan-18 18:14:40

There is a massive power inbalance between israel and the palestinians. Check out the ever increasing land grab by israel on maps from 1948 onwards. Palestine is now split into separate parts and controlled on all sides by Israel. Even the wall has encroached onto palestinian land. People who have lived there for hundreds of years have lost their land and are still refugees after all these years. No freedom of movement, no choice.
Currently israel is trying to empty another Palestinian area to turn into a sort of Jewish disney. Sorry cant recall the name. Silvan? Need to check.
When there are attacks the vast vast majority of victims are Palestinian. Who of us wouldnt be angry. Each time it happens more footsoldiers are recruited.
I am not antisemitic and what happened in the 40’s was truly shocking but that does not, in my opi nion, give israel the right to oppress other peoples. The united nations have found against israel a number of times but no sanction is ever made and trump Deciding to put the american embassy in jerusalem has not helped the already dire situation. I despair.

HannahLoisLuke Thu 04-Jan-18 18:36:28

Agree 100% Silverlining48

Birene Thu 04-Jan-18 19:19:28

I hope we don't see any more posts using this very manipulative style to draw out our thoughts on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Or any other subject for that matter. It feels like we are being taken for fools. I almost didn't want to respond but it has truly irritated me. Perhaps Jura could set out her opinions in a more upfront, honest, personal way in future - instead of appearing to hide behind a 'character' however close to a real person that character is.
I'm surprised and disappointed that this post was allowed in its present form by the moderators. Hope we don't have any more of this nonsense, just honest opinion please.

lemongrove Thu 04-Jan-18 19:35:02

Yes, it needed to be clear that jura2 was only posting this ‘plea’ and was not the teenager in question.
Regardless of Israeli/Palestinian conflict and how we see it,this teenager and her entire family are up to their eyebrows in all sorts of things according to various reports, so we shouldn't be taken in by it.

NannyTee Thu 04-Jan-18 19:49:06

Well said lemongrove!

merlotgran Thu 04-Jan-18 20:11:04

Those of us who have been on here a while are familiar with jura's style of OPs and know when to take them with a pinch of salt.

jura2 Thu 04-Jan-18 20:14:00

Sorry, did not mean to 'hide behind anything' - the title asked 'is this young woman a terrorist' - which made it clear to me I was not talking about me. It was clear too because most of us here know each other. And as said, I gave this as an example refering to another discussion on GN- where 'terrorists' were cited- like Mandela.

Nazis of course called 'The Resistance' in France 'terrorists'.
This post was not to draw out people re Israel versus Palestine - but to illustrate exactly what many said ' someone's terrorist is another's freedom fighter'.

This family was indeed 'up to their eyebrows' - not of their own choice- their land was taken, their house, their water, and several family members and friends, neighbours, were killed, shot, beaten, humiliated ....this is not about politics, but humanity.

And I wonder how many of your ever asked yourselves- faced with Apartheid, with no political voice whatsoever- or with nazi occupation and collaborators in the Vichy régime- what would I have done. Lie down- or fight.

I hope I would fight ... and can't blame anyone who feels the same.

Jalima1108 Thu 04-Jan-18 20:17:59

I don't think you can call Melanie Phillips unbiased.
She is Jewish, isn't she?
So hardly unbiased.

Is the child in the OP a real child or a generic child?
Every child should be entitled to a safe, secure upbringing but so many do not. I would help a child as so many do and hope that one day he or she would grow up, remember our help, and aim to be a peacemaker, not a terrorist MinniesMum.

whitewave Thu 04-Jan-18 20:21:07

Yes it is the sentiment of the OP which is important.

To my mind Zionism is the worst thing to be inflicted on Israel’s people. The result is the internationally agreed illegal land grabs continuing throughout that region.
