Labour shifts to back a customs union with EU after Brexit (Sky News)

news.sky.com/story/labour-shifts-to-back-a-customs-union-with-eu-after-brexit-11267193

Sir Keir Starmer Labours Shadow Brexit secretary said Labour had "unanimously" agreed at a meeting last week to "develop" their Brexit policy.

He said: "It's a customs union… there's going to have to be a new agreement, but will it do the work of the current customs union? Yes, that's the intention."

Sir Keir admitted Labour's position means it will have to be "negotiated" as to who is in control of Britain's trade policy after Brexit.

He said: "We will have to have a say but the real point is - because we all want trade agreements, we all want more trade agreements - are we more likely to get them if we do it jointly with the EU or on our own?

From Labour Leave. (below) The Andrew Marr interview.

Marr: After we leave, who will be in charge of trade policy?

Starmer: That will have to be negotiated.

"Keir_Starmer confirms a Labour government would sell out the British public on Brexit and tie us into a protectionist Customs Union with the EU. Shameful!"

Boris Johnson comparing the Irish border to the London congestion charge zone not going down well in Ireland.

Day6 Tue 27-Feb-18 13:47:14

By David Scullion.
"Making his pitch in front of a driverless car, Corbyn said Labour would negotiate “a new comprehensive UK-EU customs union” to prevent tariffs and a hard border in Northern Ireland. "

"In other words, Labour’s Britain would be a passenger, letting the likes of Jean-Claude Juncker and Michel Barnier drive our policy on trade. But Corbyn also said Labour wouldn’t accept a deal that left the UK “a passive recipient of rules”. He said any deal struck by Labour would need to ensure the UK has a say in future trade deals."

Oh well good luck with that Jezza! grin You really think you could get Barnier and Juncker to agree to a bespoke 'have your cake and eat it' deal?

As has been pointed out, most Remainers see a victory - BUT they seem to forget Corbyn won't be doing the negotiating.

He can promise his drooling admirers the moon, but it's only words. (He likes to promise such a lot, doesn't he? It's going to be soooo costly should he ever become PM. Gird your loins taxpayers. grin)

The driver-less cars were a good backdrop for him as he spoke yesterday. He would be happy to allow the EU to remain steering the UK just where it wants. angry

Boris Johnson comparing the Irish border to the London congestion charge zone not going down well in Ireland.

I'm not surprised. I am beginning to wonder why anyone thought he was intelligent.

Tegan2 Tue 27-Feb-18 13:58:00

Because, alas, if you say things in a way that makes [some]people think you know what you're talking about, they believe you. Especially when half the newspapers in this country back you up....

I’m not sure that is an appropriate question to ask on a thread bridgeit it could lead to a lot of unpleasantness

GracesGranMK2 Tue 27-Feb-18 16:14:32

More fool them for not being intelligent enough to see what a buffoon he is then Tegan. He really is a very silly man.

Bridgeit Tue 27-Feb-18 16:15:54

Yes I know & apologies for that, but as this has happened more than once & I only go on couple of threads I just wondered if it is just me. Don’t worry I won’t comment further on here ladies.

GGM2 you posted Corbyn’s own words just yesterday:
‘ the EU is not the source of all enlightenment and Leaving does not spell doom’.So yes, he did say that.

lemongrove Tue 27-Feb-18 16:31:03

I will pm you Bridgeit ?

What makes Corbyn think that Barnier and others would do what he wants?
They wouldn't.

durhamjen Tue 27-Feb-18 16:41:28

Because Corbyn's Brexit team have been having reasonable discussions with Barnier and others in the EU for quite a time?
They haven't been threatening the EU like May and team.

"On leaving the single market and customs union being like "giving up a three course meal for a promise of a packet of crisps in the future". I once caught the night bus with someone who had a packet of Monster Munch which lasted about an hour. It was like witnessing a miracle."

David Allen Green.

I prefer to read and believe 'Trade Unions Against the EU'
Some people might be interested in the fact that 1000s of tonnes of over produced food in the eu is sold onto Africa, therefore local producers can't compete.
Not everyone in Africa is happy with the 'free trade deals' they view it as more colonialism.

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 17:06:49

Better tell that to Fox then. He’s swallowed Adam Smith entirely

Wally Tue 27-Feb-18 19:10:06

The extreme left takeover of the Labour Party continues unabated. Corbyn has just appointed an ex communist ( who are we kidding ex) Andrew Murray as his consultant. This is the same Andrew Murray who supported Stalin and North Korea. Momentums Jon lansman is trying to become party general secretary.

durhamjen Tue 27-Feb-18 19:14:18

Calm down, wally. Lots of people are trying to become general secretary.

Consultant for what?

suzied Tue 27-Feb-18 19:17:17

I didn’t know Stalin was still in power.

Wally Tue 27-Feb-18 19:19:44

He was a Stalin apologist.

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 19:26:50

Bit OTT wally

Wally Tue 27-Feb-18 19:28:12
