Labour shifts to back a customs union with EU after Brexit (Sky News)

news.sky.com/story/labour-shifts-to-back-a-customs-union-with-eu-after-brexit-11267193

Sir Keir Starmer Labours Shadow Brexit secretary said Labour had "unanimously" agreed at a meeting last week to "develop" their Brexit policy.

He said: "It's a customs union… there's going to have to be a new agreement, but will it do the work of the current customs union? Yes, that's the intention."

Sir Keir admitted Labour's position means it will have to be "negotiated" as to who is in control of Britain's trade policy after Brexit.

He said: "We will have to have a say but the real point is - because we all want trade agreements, we all want more trade agreements - are we more likely to get them if we do it jointly with the EU or on our own?

From Labour Leave. (below) The Andrew Marr interview.

Marr: After we leave, who will be in charge of trade policy?

Starmer: That will have to be negotiated.

"Keir_Starmer confirms a Labour government would sell out the British public on Brexit and tie us into a protectionist Customs Union with the EU. Shameful!"

They can't answer that, Morgana, as they have no idea.
They just want to Leave, but have all the advantages of remaining.

Some people are worried about getting MOTs for their “A frame” towing devices Petra.
Others are worried about a return of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, some are concerned about Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Unilever, Banks moving out of UK, others are worried about having to leave the U.K. where they have jobs, homes and families, some are worried about the fate of the NHS.

I think this thread started by showing a lack of the English language.
I am sure we were all taught the difference between the definite and indefinite article.
Definite - the - the one we have now.
Indefinite - a - any one that we can negotiate to have.
We can't keep THE customs union that we have now along with all the other EU countries as that is what we want to leave.
We can negotiate A customs union, with new rules and regulations.
It's really quite simple, and not at all a betrayal of the public vote.
Trying to keep THE customs union would be, but they are not saying that they want to do that.
I find labour's stance much clearer than May's.

Yes but they don’t even know what the remain advantages are.

Even IDS is muddled. Did anyone see him on Sunday politics? What a charlatan that man is and to bring in the poor, suggesting that they will benefit from free trade after Brexit

What on earth does he think is happening now with the EU?

Another liar who can’t be trusted. Tell us IDS which university did you attend? Or have you forgotten again?

durhamjen Sun 25-Feb-18 17:57:32

He wants us out because of his betrayal of the sick and the poor and the fact that the EU are querying the DWP methods.
What he has forgotten about is that the UN are doing the same.
Will that mean that if we leave the EU, we then have to leave the UN?

whitewave Sun 25-Feb-18 18:04:26

No the world apparently because more immigrants are coming here 206k at last count from all over the world.

"It's about b****y angry that the the brexit ostriches are jeopardising the future of my grandchildren."

You just don't seem to get that people who voted to leave the prohibitive and costly EU voted as they did to protect the future of THEIR grandchildren.

It hasn't even occurred to imperious, blinkered Remoaners that they cannot predict the future. Leavers can't either, no one can, nor can economic predictions made now be guaranteed. The future is not ours to see. The majority of the electorate in the UK look forward to a life free of the Brussels shackles and fear the direction in which the EU is going.

When the EU disintegrates in the near future as I feel sure it will (just as you feel it's stable and the way forward) you may be relieved that behemoth - of what's become much more than a trading alliance - doesn't crush the UK as it topples.

"We can't keep THE customs union that we have now along with all the other EU countries as that is what we want to leave.
We can negotiate A customs union, with new rules and regulations."

Oh yawn, yawn lecturing DJ, Stop patronising.
Anyone who has been reading articles online today in an attempt to discover why Labour has back-tracked will have seen that distinction spelled out many, many times already. hmm

MaizieD Sun 25-Feb-18 18:11:37

I didn't think 'not leaving' was on the table.

It has been said at various times by various people in the EU that we could change our minds and stay any time before the end of the A50 period.

Afraid I can't give you a link, though; I can't bookmark everything about Brexit...

No man is an island -- John Donne, I think.

This as well.

Corbyn was congratulating Harry Leslie Smith on his 95th birthday.

Harry was wondering how the Tory party recruiting tweeters is different ot the Russian interference in the referendum.

Harry about Brexit.

Let's suppose that the Italian election on 4th March doesn't go the way the eu wants.
Let's suppose that Merkel looses the vote to form a government on 4th March.
If either one of these votes doesn't go the way the eu wants politics are going to look very different in Europe.

Loving all the lights shining for Europe

durhamjen Sun 25-Feb-18 19:07:28

The problem is, Day6, that no matter how many times you read it or are told it, you do not seem to believe that there is a difference between THE customs union and A customs union.
If you did, you wouldn't have started the thread, would you?

"On the eve of my 95th birthday, I can't help but think of my mum and her bravery to fight for me and all of her children in such a barbarous and uncaring era. You must have been terrified when I came into the world b/c you knew being born in a slum my chances were slim to none."

Harry Leslie Smith.

mcem Sun 25-Feb-18 19:27:54

Ooops! And there's another one - we can't predict the future! All you can do is trot out cliche after cliche!
One single solitary example of my DGCs having their horizons narrowed (and therefore their futures jeopardized) Erasmus. Or shall we just cross our fingers and stick them in our ears at the same time, while humming loudly.

Tegan2 Sun 25-Feb-18 19:33:49

It's been nearly two years and I'm still waiting for 'something to happen'. And it was all going to be so simple....

durhamjen Sun 25-Feb-18 20:00:34

There's an article in the Guardian about UK people working in the EU being forgotten about by the government.
It's by one of our top scientists who will have to give up his UK citizenship in order to keep his job.

Dod Brexiteers expect that?
Are they bothered?

Baggs Sun 25-Feb-18 20:23:40

may have to

The article is full of ifs and buts.

Baggs Sun 25-Feb-18 20:24:01

and therefore also

may not have to

Baggs Sun 25-Feb-18 20:24:16

just saying

varian Sun 25-Feb-18 21:58:13

The Labour Party persists in ignoring the views of the majority of their own supporters who voted Remain -that is a betrayal of trust.

lemongrove Sun 25-Feb-18 22:05:56

The Labour Party also persists in ignoring the views from the Labour heartlands who voted Leave!
Not doing a great job all round.

durhamjen Sun 25-Feb-18 22:08:08

Baggs, the whole of Brexit is full of ifs and buts......unless you know differently?

petra Sun 25-Feb-18 22:14:59

I can't see why the chap in the Guardian is worried. He's spent most of his working life outside the uk and plans to retire in Germany.
Sounds to me as if he's hedging his bets. If it doesn't work out in Germany, he can come home to the Mother Ship.
He certainly wants his cake and eat it.
