Unintended consequences of brexit

An executive at Airbus says that work on the Galileo sat-nav system will have to be moved out of the UK if the company wins a key contract. Galileo has become something of a political football in Brexit talks. The EU says it would have to stop the UK from accessing the encrypted part of the network when it leaves next year.

Colin Paynter, the company's UK managing director, said that EU rules required Airbus to transfer all work to its factories in France and Germany. Mr Paynter was speaking at a Commons committee hearing on Exiting the European Union on Wednesday.

The system was conceived to give Europe its own satellite-navigation capability - independent of US GPS - for use in telecommunications, commercial applications, by emergency services and the military. Airbus is currently bidding for the renewal of a contract covering the Galileo ground control segment - potentially worth about 200 million euros. This work is currently run out of Portsmouth.

About 100 people are currently employed by Airbus on these services. Most would likely have to move to where the work is, but it's possible some could be reallocated to other projects.

"One of the conditions in that bid documentation from the European Space Agency is that all work has to be led by an EU-based company by March '19," Mr Paynter told the committee. Effectively that means that for Airbus to bid and win that work, we will effectively novate (move) all of the work from the UK to our factories in France and Germany on day one of that contract."

Anecdotal evidence - 2 of my neighbours have just put their house on the market- when I asked them where they were going I was told- ”Paris”- they are both medics, both Brits. I must say I wasn’t surprised.

Mostlyharmless: No I did not put it clearly.

Allygran1 Fri 11-May-18 14:57:59

Thank you Varian.

mostlyharmless Fri 11-May-18 14:59:47

More anecdotal evidence.
I heard voices raised in the supermarket car park this morning in our solidly “Leave” constituency. It turned out to be three voters talking, annoyed that the referendum had ever been allowed to happen, wanting to stay in, and insisting we need a vote on the final deal.

Apologies for misinterpreting about the website allyg.

Allygran1 Fri 11-May-18 15:03:16

Mostlyharmless Mr Hanan MEP is just as entitled to his view as anyone else.

We discussed at length yesterday the EEA and the EU and the way EFTA applications work.

Allygran1 Fri 11-May-18 15:09:21

No problem mostlyharmless my fault.

MaizieD Fri 11-May-18 16:56:59

Maizie the point was, that the NFU believe that low standards of animal welfare equate to saving on cost of rearing animals. Therefore cheaper production costs mean that their members, British farmers, cannot compete because their animal welfare standards are higher and more costly and they cannot compete. Love the "non-sequitor thread diverter".

It's still got nothing to do with the content of the HoL report.

MaizieD Fri 11-May-18 17:15:36

We discussed at length yesterday the EEA and the EU and the way EFTA applications work.

So what?

If people want to raise the topic again they are at perfect liberty to do so. You are welcome to your control freakery but don't expect compliance...

Allygran1 Fri 11-May-18 17:38:03

MaizieD Your quite right. The point I was making was if anyone wanted to read that part of the tread it was there. I should have said that.

Please don't bother abusing me I won't respond to that level of verbal abuse.

lemongrove Fri 11-May-18 17:53:35

MaizieD why so hostile?

There are lists of academics/ economists/doctors/business leaders etc giving their point of view for both leaving the EU and for Remaining in the EU.There are very left wing/right wing/ centrists who also give their views for leaving the EU and for remaining in the EU.
All these people, intelligent and eminent and expert in their
Own fields, as well as us lesser mortals have their reasons to think the way they do.
We had the referendum, we are leaving the EU and need to try and get the best deal possible all round, but not at the expense of ending up in a quasi EU situation, the worst of all worlds.

lemongrove Fri 11-May-18 18:02:15

Varian why so hostile?

lemongrove Fri 11-May-18 18:03:08

Could it be that that you Varian simply cannot accept that
We are leaving the EU?

lemongrove Fri 11-May-18 18:05:22

There is enough hostility in real life about Brexit, without posters on GN being as awful as they can be to posters who happen to have voted the other way.

Why, mostly? It was only an advisory referendum and was won by lies.

mostlyharmless Fri 11-May-18 18:20:29

I know varian. What a mess!

Allygran1 Fri 11-May-18 18:46:45

Lemongrove, ignore such contemptible attacks.

varian Fri 11-May-18 19:03:15

Is it a contemptable attack to suspect a previous poster of having changed her name?

Fennel Fri 11-May-18 19:12:38

varian - my thoughts too.
Methinks the 'lady' doth protest too much.

mostlyharmless Fri 11-May-18 19:12:46

Well, as I was saying, half the voting population chose Remain (probably more now).
Most MPs wanted Remain and now we see most of the House of Lords too. Even Theresa May wanted to Remain.
She has an impossible task of trying to deliver a Brexit that doesn’t ruin the country while appeasing the extremist Brexiteers on the right of the party.
Many MPs now feel compelled to go along with the Referendum result against their instincts.
But perhaps the tide is turning varian? There seems less appetite for a hard Brexit recently and more talk of some sort of Customs Unions as a compromise.

varian Fri 11-May-18 19:19:13

Let's hope so. It could go either way as the bully-boys of the right-wing press still have enormous power but we must stand up to them.
