Jacob Rees-Mogg Moves For Conservative Party Leadership.

With an open attack on Theresa Mays handling of the Brexit negotiations many in the media believe that Jacob Rees-Mogg has made his first open move in a bid to become Conservative party leader and Britain's next Prime Minister.

Rees-Mogg in yet another of his ongoing interviews with the media lambasted "weak" Theresa May for preparing the UK for "Brexit failure". Rees-Mogg stated that with The British negotiators going into each set of negotiations with an attitude of "we will kowtow before you, Mr Barnier in every way you possible throughout these talks" there is no hope of success for the UK. The foregoing are undoubtedly harsh words indeed even from an arch hard line Brexitier, but many believe that there is far more to Rees-Moggs words than just Brexit.

It may well be that this hard line right wing politician has witnessed the way that Jeremy Corbyn has moved the Labour party to the left and now feels he could carry out the same in the Conservative party with the exception of that move being in the opposite direction in regards to political ground.

Evidence to the above can be seen in Rees-Moggs attack on Scottish Conservative Leader Ruth Davison, for in the same interview he stated that Davison should not be allowed to marry her longtime same sex partner as planned. However, same sex marriage legislation was put before parliament and passed in 2013 under the David Cameron coalition government.

In making the above comment Rees-Mogg is undoubtedly looking to damage Ruth Davison, who also is seen as a possible next leader of the Conservative party. That stated, it is also being seen as a move against centre ground Concervatives in parliament.

In the above can be seen shades of Momentum's original moves against centre Blairite MPs in the Labour party.

Jalima1108, just had a quick look but cannot find the MPs interviews on iPlayer. However, here are some links that demonstrate the strength of feeling on the subject among politicians.

Our fishing industry never got a good deal because they were badly let down by our representative on the EU fishing committee, none other than Nigel Farage, who only bothered to turn up to one out of 42 committee meetings. Fishing communities who voted leave need to be reminded of that.

Thanks Grandad

varian, i could not agree more with your above post. The fishing industry could be once again a main employer in the Northeast and Southwest if Brexit really ever does come about at some stage, which I hope not

I felt fishing was one of the strongest cards Britain held in the leave negotiations, but this incompetent government and its negotiators have just thrown that advantage away for some far off deal involving the London finance industry.

As stated by you Varion, the people of the Northeast and Southwest who voted for Brexit need to be continually reminded of that if there is to be another General Election in the Autumn.

Poor Jacob Rees-Mogg has been priced out of Mayfair!

"I am a father of six children and I have moved from Mayfair to Cowley Street because Cowley Street is cheaper and I couldn't afford a bigger property in Mayfair."

Nothing to do with moving closer to Downing Street!

Anniebach Mon 28-May-18 12:41:03

Why move to be nearer to Downing Street? PM’s live there

Grandad1943 Mon 28-May-18 13:08:39

Yes, and without doubt he hopes to be soon living there.

mostlyharmless Mon 28-May-18 13:26:56

Surely the Downing Street flat would be too small for his family?

“I bought it because I have six children,” he told the paper of the £5m, five-storey property. “My Mayfair house has three bedrooms for nine people [as if you could forget nanny], so reception rooms now have children in them.”

mostlyharmless, being prime minister and being a finance expert JRM will also undoutedly appoint himself Chancellor of the Exchequer. That way he will have the flat at number eleven as well for family accommodation. smile

He certainly has the arrogance for that.

Anniebach Mon 28-May-18 14:23:10

Arrogance is in the eye of the beholder

trisher Mon 28-May-18 14:33:09

And 2 salaries Grandad1943 which will help with his child care expenses! Although actually I think he will dump children and nanny at Cowley street and decamp to Downing Street, popping back occassionally of course to see all is well.

Grandad1943 I felt fishing was one of the strongest cards Britain held in the leave negotiations, but this incompetent government and its negotiators have just thrown that advantage away for some far off deal involving the London finance industry.
Those Brexit voting fishing communities and Ukippers should note that fishing accounts for no more than 0.07-0.2% UK GDP, whereas the service sector accounts for 80% ; financial services 20% - so which sector should we be protecting? London finances much of the rest of the country - 22% GDP generated in London ( it has 12.5% population and pays about 1/3 of all the tax collected in the UK.) So don't dismiss the importance of London's contribution to the UK economy.

lemongrove Mon 28-May-18 14:37:15

Aren’t some of you putting the cart well before the horse
grin he isn’t PM, is unlikely to ever be PM and there isn’t a ring yet for him to even throw his hat into.

Anniebach Mon 28-May-18 15:06:39

Some are unaware that several PM’s have lived in No 11 , to be fair to new labour members and Momentum members they quite possibly wouldn’t know this

nigglynellie Mon 28-May-18 15:11:30

There are of course some extremely wealthy people on the left of the Labour party, Jon Lansman I understand isn't short of a bob or two and has property worth several million! but then of course that for some curious reason is perfectly ok. That's one thing about the left, they're master's of the double think!!

maryeliza54 Mon 28-May-18 15:19:56

What’s wrong with being wealthy ( whatever that means) and being left wing?

Ilovecheese Mon 28-May-18 15:20:15

But not both number 10 and number 11. So no need to patronize anniebach
There are suggestions that Michael Gove might be throwing his hat in the ring, but you are right lemongrove there is no ring yet. Ruth Davidson is another.

MaizieD Mon 28-May-18 15:21:06

Since when, nellie, was there a rule that says everyone in the Labour Party has to be poor?

Or are you just confirming that no rich person has a social conscience?

MaizieD Mon 28-May-18 15:24:06

What’s wrong with being wealthy ( whatever that means) and being left wing?

I think it's seen as 'class betrayal', maryeliza by the deeply conservative working classes who seem to feel uncomfortable if people don't conform to the stereotype of their class.

paddyann Mon 28-May-18 15:27:13

Mogg is being pushed in the media in the same way Farage was...lets all hope they dont make him into someone the public will vote for ...the ENGLISH public that is .Ther isn't a cats chance in hell he would get voted in here.As for his remarks about Ruth ,he would have done better to attack her deplorable record re her surgeries...ONE that she has actually turned up at since 2015 ,while her neighbouring SNP MSP has worked at over 179 .She's always moaning about SNP not doing the "day job" maybe she could try it herself instead of Bake off and other TV shows and her innumerable photo shoots .Hopefully she'll find motherhood more fulfilling than she does day to day working as an MSP !Beware Ilovecheese Ruth likes to tell stories ...ones that are easily identified and proven to be lies

lemongrove Mon 28-May-18 15:28:07

Lectures about the evils of capitalism from people (Lansman included) who dabble in socialism, whilst racking up huge amounts of cash from their own capitalism ventures, should not be taken seriously.....people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Anniebach Mon 28-May-18 15:28:59

Seems the nanny in the JRM household troubles some, most strange, nothing unusual in a family who can afford childcare in their own home do so.

yggdrasil Mon 28-May-18 15:43:12

If she is there to look after 6 (soon to be 7) children, what time should she have had to go canvassing with the prolific father?

Jalima1108 Mon 28-May-18 15:50:52

The nanny doesn't bother me one bit although I know I made a joke about jam-making; my DM was a nanny although, of course, she married and had her own family but kept in touch with the family she was with for the longest. And a couple of the younger members of our family have had nannies for their children.

Jalima1108 Mon 28-May-18 15:53:26

There is still a fishing industry (just) but I am afraid that it has been decimated over the last years. Hence other businesses have failed as they depended on the fishing industry too.
