The GMB Union has the bright idea to take water from a Welsh reservoir ,which supplies Birmingham, to London and parts of the south east.

Many have not forgotten what happened to Capel Celyn .

Hardy and tenacious = hybrid vigour.

Great minds think alike, gd (even if not quite in gear!).

Jalima said "the rest of us are just mongrels." I say "speak for yourself". I am not a mongrel. I am a Pict. grin wink

We’ll be back to the days of the Honey cart before we know it Baggs! Cesspits and keeping the weekly clothes wash water in barrels for the veggies. Them was the days. I remember them well! (We was posh - we had cess pit)

PamelaJ1 Sun 10-Jun-18 07:38:32

I hadn’t heard about Dereham Nfk. how awful.
Just goes to show that Wales doesn’t have the monopoly on having unwanted schemes foisted on them!
We just don’t use the England card.
BTW I think we all need homes but the ones they build up here aren’t the type that are needed.

Anniebach Sun 10-Jun-18 08:24:07

Is Dereham in England ? If so how can the English ‘use the race card’ ?

Baggs, England has always thought of the greater good, ask the Scots, Irish and Welsh , problem is England has always seen it’s self as the greater.

NfkDumpling Sun 10-Jun-18 08:46:37

Only bits of it Annie. Ask those of us in the Regions. The extremities. Forgotten bits. I wasn’t using the race card. Merely pointing out that we get dumped on and over-ruled too. Central Government has just realised that Norfolk is a nice place and may be just commutable to London. If they improve the roads and rail links. So - we now have a dual carriageway from Norwich all the way to London. Nowhere else. Just London.

Anniebach Sun 10-Jun-18 09:00:26

Nfk, you would never use the race card x

Everything seems to be about London doesn’t it? I admit my knowledge of cities and towns in England is not good, think I should use a map when we speak of areas of England,

Just remembered , I was on a forum for years until AOL sold off. Had a two day disagreement with a chap ,my best mate there, I was sure when driving from Wales to England over the bridge I was driving West because I use to love driving to the West Country, didn’t give a thought to the fact that West Wales was behind me , duh ?

PamelaJ1 Sun 10-Jun-18 09:23:06

What I meant Annie is that you seem to think that you get the bum end of almost everything because you are in Wales.
Well we get it too, we just don’t blame everything on the fact that it’s because we’re in England.

Anniebach Sun 10-Jun-18 10:12:56

Really Pamela? When was England controlled by the three other countries of the U.K ?

There is a most interesting video on uTube, underwater film of the homes and grave stones in the reservoir you proudly claimed your family helped to pay for.

suzied Sun 10-Jun-18 10:13:49

Oh gawd I wondered when we would start London bashing. There are more than twice as many people in London as in Wales. You’ve got lovely valleys, mountain scenery and you begrudge a bit of water to the city that generates the largest % of the countries wealth and pays more in tax than anywhere . So London pays a lot of the dole money, benefits and pensions for people in Wales. Would you rather have flooding? Would you rather live in England? I bet not.

Anniebach Sun 10-Jun-18 10:29:49

Heard it all before suzied, we pay tax too so you do not pay for us. This arrogance is the cause of a divided U.K. we are bigger than you so deal with it.

I don’t begrudge anyone water . I am angry with the arrogance of the union chap.

Joelsnan Sun 10-Jun-18 11:25:19

I wonder why some in Wales and Scotland go on about England controlling and subverting their countries when both have representation in the UK parliament and each has their own devolved government which England does not have. Yorkshire has a population larger than Wales and about equivalent to Scotland, over the centuries it provided much of the industrial wealth of the nation additionally it's reservoirs still provide water to such places as Manchester and yet we don't seem to get the 'Xenophobia' that is evident from other regions.

PamelaJ1 Sun 10-Jun-18 11:48:27

Annie I didn’t say my family helped to pay for anything.

Anniebach Sun 10-Jun-18 12:04:58

Pamela, you didn’t , I am so sorry please accept my apologies.

Anniebach Sun 10-Jun-18 12:11:19

Joelsnan, Capel Celyn was passed by a private act. There were no devolved parliaments when the reservoirs were built, surely Yorkshire is in the same country as Manchester?

Scotland and Wales are countries not regions of England.

Joelsnan Sun 10-Jun-18 12:20:36

Annebach but Wales does not have the monopoly on villages being sunk to provide water to other parts of the U.K., I think there are about four more, most of these being in the north of England.
The difference between a county and a country is an 'r' and we all exist on the same island (except of course NI).

paddyann Sun 10-Jun-18 12:20:57

Simple Joelsnan our 59 MP's in Westminster have absolutely NO chance of getting anything through parliament when they are so outnumbered. Its just a sop to us ,a "let them think they are getting an opinion" watch WM live and SEE the disdain and sheer arrogance used towards our MP's.OUR elected representatives. The very fact that we have had Tory governments at all in the past 70 years when we have NEVER voted for them says it all.DEVOLVED power is power retained by WM ...we have power over just 17 % of our laws etc. Most of our taxes and yes WE pay tax too goes south.10% of every scheme in England is paid by Scotland that includes those things that we dont use or even see .Like London crossrail and London sewers ..like HS2 that doesn't come anywhere near us .Bitter ...me...your damn right I am .My country is used as a cash cow by the English parliament and has been for centuries.Check out the WM accounts from the late 19 and early 20th centuries when we got around 30% of our OWN income returned to us .The rest used by our "lords and masters " for their own projects !!

paddyann Sun 10-Jun-18 12:23:30

By the way WM stopped publishing those accounts after WW1 .There will still be accounts just hidden from view .

Granny23 Sun 10-Jun-18 12:23:48

joelsnan I hear many people (on this and many other fora) from Yorkshire and other North of England areas, complaining bitterly about the inequalities that exist between North and South.

People in the poorer areas of the UK pay the same level of Income Tax, Vat, etc. as those in the more affluent areas, but see little benefit from those taxes, whereas all the big investments in infrastructure seem to be in the SE. People resent paying towards more road/rail etc improvements which never come near them.

Perhaps, if there were more investment in other areas of the UK, this would shift the emphasis from London, creating more employment and opportunities in the Midlands and North, instead of the current situation whereby London, the seat of power, is the magnet for Headquarters of banks, businesses, even Charities, which could easily, with modern technologies, be located elsewhere.

suzied Sun 10-Jun-18 12:31:48

Yes but we should be blaming our government policies instead of criticising and wanting to penalise ordinary people who live in populous regions. London generates more wealth than anywhere else and far from draining wealth from elsewhere hands it out to people in poorer areas. Maybe not enough and things should be spread around but don’t blame people for living where the work is. It would be much nicer and cheaper to live in Scotland or Wales than some parts of England, but many people have moved there for employment. Maybe that should not be the case, but don’t blame those people.

Joelsnan Sun 10-Jun-18 12:32:44

Paddyann. Do you consider Yorkshire is treated any better than you. It certainly is not nor is most of the North of England . Yorkshire has the same population as Scotland, it's industry helped to support Scotland. It has about the same number of MPs as Scotland (based upon population) and has far less of a say about what goes on here. You think you are being badly treated..come to the North of England and see what surfdom is really like.

Anniebach Sun 10-Jun-18 12:40:18

Scotland and Wales never had industries Joelsnan ?

Joelsnan Sun 10-Jun-18 12:48:53

Annuebach of course they did and the Welsh miners and Steelworkers contributed to the overall wealth of the U.K. But there are some suggestions around that England bled some of the other members of the U.K. dry and I have to counter this as far far from the truth.

nigglynellie Sun 10-Jun-18 13:02:43

annie, I totally understand how angry you feel/felt at officialdom arrogantly telling you (Wales) what you can or can't do over water or anything else com to that, without so much as a 'by your leave.'! I feel the same at times with our somewhat overbearing local authority!! but I think most of us particularly where I live in Gloucestershire, feel nothing but friendship and good will towards Wales.??

Anniebach Sun 10-Jun-18 13:48:58

niggly ?, the idiot has no official authority , he is a union man. I wonder how he thinks the water will get from Mid Wales to the Cotswolds canals, people running to and fro with buckets of water grin. Or pipes running through Offa’s Dyke , through Herefordshire to Gloucestershire, with water companies reputation of leaking pipes by the time the water got to Gloucestershire it would be a trickle ?
