The GMB Union has the bright idea to take water from a Welsh reservoir ,which supplies Birmingham, to London and parts of the south east.

Many have not forgotten what happened to Capel Celyn .

gillybob Sun 10-Jun-18 13:49:42

Exactly granny23

Governments should stop enabling big businesses to locate and expand in and around London . This would force them out and share the wealth around the country . They won’t of course . Instead they improve and expand infrastructure (that we all pay for) to enable the businesses to stay and expand in the capital and keep all the wealth in one place .

I’ve long thought that Parliament, the Stock Exhange, Bank of England and all the civil service should be moved lock, stock and barrel to Manchester. Or Liverpool. More central. It would even everything out!

Anniebach Sun 10-Jun-18 13:52:38

Or Cardiff, sorry couldn’t resist it ?

nigglynellie Sun 10-Jun-18 13:58:55

Annie?!!!!

NfkDumpling Sun 10-Jun-18 17:06:20

Nah, too far south!

MaizieD Sun 10-Jun-18 17:53:41

Actually, I think it was Tony Blair's Government which privatised water - I voted for them believing that they would stop this.

Going back a few pages, I'm afraid, but you believe wrongly, Jalima. The water companies were privatised in 1989. I distinctly recall that there was a tory government in power then. You might have voted for Labour in the hope they would reverse this but the deed was done eight years previous to Blair coming to power..

paddyann Sun 10-Jun-18 20:09:14

"The difference between a country and county is R" You are very wrong .I live in a country that has its OWN systems of Law and education ,its own church and its own identity .We have the oldest flag in the world ..The Saltire first flown in the 800's ,we have the most left leaning government on this Island and the most politically aware public .Sadly this COUNTRY has to hand over its earnings to its bigger neighbour and get pocket money back ..not EXACTLY a union..more a dictatorship. Now how would all you english ladies on here like to hand all your countries income to your nearest neighbour ...maybe France ? Or lets make it simpler...you give your household income to your neighbour at the end of the street and they give you back some of it and spend the rest on things THEY want.Does that float your boat?

Jalima1108 Sun 10-Jun-18 20:15:39

What I meant Annie is that you seem to think that you get the bum end of almost everything because you are in Wales.
Well we get it too, we just don’t blame everything on the fact that it’s because we’re in England.
It has just been pointed out to me (a query regarding another thread) that cancer drugs available to patients in England are not available to patients in Wales.
I had heard on our local news that cancer patients were moving to England so that they can obtain these drugs.

So a little water in exchange might be a good idea.

So yes, I think the Welsh do sometimes get the bum end of almost everything.

Jalima1108 Sun 10-Jun-18 20:20:07

At least Wales has the Royal Mint!

Jalima1108 Sun 10-Jun-18 20:22:41

Now how would all you english ladies on here like to hand all your countries income to your nearest neighbour
my nearest neighbour is Wales and I don't mind at all, well perhaps not all - as long as Welsh education, Welsh health provision etc etc comes up to English standards.
Or better.
Because at the moment it is not.

Joelsnan Sun 10-Jun-18 21:22:07

Paddyann
Could I interest you in the current Brexit Regret it 2 thread where Allygran is currently eloquently discussing the current and historical state of the Scottish economy. It may enlighten you.

Granny23 Mon 11-Jun-18 11:14:36

Joelsnan How condescending! I am sure Paddyann knows more about the ins and outs of the Scottish Economy than someone who gets their information from the biased MSM.

gillybob Mon 11-Jun-18 11:52:19

My nearest neighbour is Scotland Paddyann So you are talking rubbish ! If you really do hate the English (as it seems) why not just come out and say it?

My children/grandchildren have to pay university fees (yours don't).
I pay all prescription charges (you don't)

Plenty more examples too.... so who pays who?

.....and don't get my started on that sad woman sturgeon who is almost racist...... (she picked Iceland out in a sweep really???) anyone but England for the world cup eh? pathetic.

I happen to love Scotland and spend a lot of time North of the border but this anti-English thing is really beginning to grate !

Anniebach Mon 11-Jun-18 12:04:28

I am not anti English, the thread title I chose was thoughtless , think because the other three countries of the U.K have problems with Westminster and untill devolution it was Westminster which controlled us . And that union chap really bugged me .

Joelsnan Mon 11-Jun-18 12:43:37

Granny23 'How condescending'...really?
How does politely informing another punster to view something in another thread that may be of interest to them condescending?
If that us how your mind works, so be it, but that certainly was not the way I intended it.

Joelsnan Mon 11-Jun-18 12:44:07

TerriBull Mon 11-Jun-18 12:55:48

gillybob, I agree with your post, there are a few Scots who thinly disguise their extreme dislike of the English it's as if we have collectively morphed into "The Hammer of the Scots King" and responsible for all the injustices English governments' historically have ever committed against the Scots, cranked up by the fervour of a minority of Scottish Nationalists such as NS who will disingenuously deny it, saying something along the lines of "I've at least 2 English relatives/friends who I like".

Paddyann your posts always sound so angry, littered with shouty interjections, you do a very anti PR job for your country when I read your appraisal of the English I think good God I never want to go to Scotland again, fortunately we know some lovely Scots who we stay with when we go there and visa versa when they come down here. Nevertheless, many years ago my husband on a visit there was on the receiving end of anti English sentiments, for no other reason than simply because he was "English"

You are of course entitled to your opinions but one can't help notice how vehemently vitriolic some of your comments are particularly about the royal family.

PamelaJ1 Mon 11-Jun-18 13:06:08

I am another poster that thinks that the wealth of the UK should be fairly distributed over the whole kingdom.
However the other 3 countries ( not so sure about NI) want to be devolved so how can that work?

SueDonim Mon 11-Jun-18 13:55:58

I think this brief video demonstrates how many Scots feel towards the English. No doubt it will be dismissed as 'bantz' or a joke but I think it expresses the underlying attitude.

Perhaps Scotland can have another (once in a lifetime!) referendum and this time, fingers crossed, they can go off to the land of milk and honey, and leave the rest of us in peace!! Not quite sure how that hard border will work out or using the £ bearing in mind it will have to be tied to the Bank of England, if indeed an arrangement can be arrived at before the Euro (good luck with that!) can be brought into play!
Frankly Paddyann if your bitterness and anger is a sample of your countrymens attitude to us, then the sooner you're gone the better. We've had family in Scotland and had some wonderful holidays there and made some love friends, but frankly I wouldn't want to go there anymore! If you're still bitter about Edward 1st?!! I feel sorry for you! Lucky we in England don't still go on about the Norman Conquest and blame present day France!! How childish and tedious that would be, never mind going on about how old our flag is !! confused Honestly, are you for real!!

Anniebach Mon 11-Jun-18 14:36:59

I hope England wins but dread the BBC coverage which will go on for years ?, we are still hearing ‘they think it’s all over, it is now’ . 52 years of that is a bit too much.

The welsh do not want to break away from the UK, I don’t want Scotland to break away and I so disagree with a United Ireland, many in the North want to remain in the U.K.

NfkDumpling Mon 11-Jun-18 14:38:15

Getting back to Annie’s original post - I don’t understand exactly the logistics and practicalities of how putting water into the canal system is going to top up the Thames enough to solve any drought problems. Does this Union person think the lock gates can all be left open and the water will just run down hill to London? Will all the canal boats need bigger engines to fight the flow? And what about the fish and eccological ramifications. Welsh water is completely different from Thames water. If the weather is dry it’ll all have evaporated way before Oxford anyway so it’d need to be piped. Perhaps they could put in a pipeline under the HS2. The more I think about it the more I believe it was just a throw away remark by a conceited bloke after a pint or two.

gillybob Mon 11-Jun-18 14:45:27

I think many of the Scottish "football fans" and plenty that aren't normally, would rather anyone won the world cup but England and will probably throw a party as soon as we leave the tournament . I really can't understand this bitterness. I would always want a "home team" to win or do well, be it England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland . We are one UK are we not?

Sadly I think maybe niggly is right and Scotland should hold a second (once in a lifetime) referendum or a third, fourth or fifth until they get the result that the England haters want.
