An interesting piece on Radio 4 this morning.

MawBroon Tue 31-Jul-18 21:14:11

MaizieD The “y” as in Givenchy is a shorter form of “ee” - but unstressed
As in “j’y suis, j’y reste” (here I am and I’m not shifting”)
Likewise the “i”is sort of cross between an “i” and an “ee” sound.
Words it’s “i” will often sound more like “ah” like fin , sapin etc

MawBroon Tue 31-Jul-18 21:14:51

You put it perfectly jalima!

MaizieD Tue 31-Jul-18 21:26:56

So Jeevonchee is right?

MaizieD Tue 31-Jul-18 21:27:14

Sorry, Jeevonsheee

MawBroon Tue 31-Jul-18 21:50:05

Too many “e”’s!

MaizieD Tue 31-Jul-18 21:53:05

grin Fat fingers....

The dark farce of Brexit dominates the political landscape. Meanwhile, in a vast rebuke to the idea that the EU makes all of our decisions for us, local government in England and Wales battles on in the face of austerity, trying and failing to deliver essential services that have nothing to do with Europe and everything to do with the town hall. Nowhere – at the moment – is that battle being lost more comprehensively than in Northamptonshire.

The county council has been insolvent for months, and is faced with making £70 million in cuts to balance its books. The council is caught between two sets of legal obligations, the first to provide core service and the second to stay within its budget. It can’t do one, without failing to do the other.

(Deborah Orr, writing in the "i")

I didn't see this coming.
MEPs have rejected plans to scrutinise their €50,000 a year expenses. These expenses are automatically paid into their bank accounts each month with no questions asked.
That's €50,000 X 751.
That's on top of their €96,000 wage.

MamaCaz Thu 02-Aug-18 17:11:09

Yes, Varian, and that is a Conservative council under a Conservative Government. Make of that you will!!!

varian Thu 02-Aug-18 17:28:31

We also have a Conservative County Council on the verge of bankruptcy. The deterioration in services due to their mismanagement and of course the government cuts has been utterly appalling.

That does depend on the definition of Northern Europe.

But, if so, why are we a net contributor to the EU coffers?

PECS Thu 02-Aug-18 19:40:48

But it's OK that nice Mr Reece-Mogg says it all be fine in about 50 years.. meanwhile he is making sure his money is safely invested outside the UK..including in Europe if the media is to be believed

Baggs Thu 02-Aug-18 19:44:57

Does Rees-Mogg actually say where his money is invested? I thought the company he helps run invests other people's money.

Baggs Thu 02-Aug-18 19:51:13

According to an article in the .independent in August last year "The father-of-six lives in a Grade II-listed manor house with his wife Helena and also owns the £4m freehold of a building in Pall Mall and the £1.5m leasehold of a flat inside it".

That sounds like investments inside the UK to me.

Baggs Thu 02-Aug-18 19:56:05

maw, your mention of "j'y suis, j'y reste" brings to mind one of Minibaggs's toddlerisms when she would lie down on the floor and say "I rest" ?

lemongrove Thu 02-Aug-18 22:12:05

Though you would have been worried Baggs if minibags had said ‘I rest my case’ grin

lemongrove Thu 02-Aug-18 22:13:51

Why are a couple of posters giving credit to what JRM says about the future I wonder?
Do they believe he has special clairvoyant powers?

PECS Thu 02-Aug-18 22:21:09

I would not particularly trust JRM .. it is just what I read in the press, same as anyone else..unless any people here have inside knowledge?

varian Sat 04-Aug-18 15:40:09

From an article in GQ entitled "Could Jacob Rees-Mogg get any worse?"-

Rees-Mogg’s greatest hits include: suggesting Somerset have its own time zone; suggesting all council workers wear bowler hats; breaking the record for the longest word uttered in parliament (“floccinaucinihilipilification”, which means worthless); struggling to name a single pop song; speaking to a group that favours voluntary repatriation of black immigrants; wearing a top hat to Margaret Thatcher’s funeral; disputing climate change; voting against – deep breath – a bankers’ bonus tax, increasing the tax on those earning over £150,000, gay marriage, abortion even in cases of rape and incest and the 1998 Human Rights Act; and voting for private members’ clubs being exempt from the smoking ban... as long as they don’t serve food. He’s the least moral moral politician you could ever vote for.

Baggs Sat 04-Aug-18 15:48:22

I think some of those would benefit from a bit of context, varian.

I very much doubt if the bowler hat suggestion was anything other than drollery.

He has made it very clear that his views on abortion are his personal views because of his faith and that if one believes in freedom of religion and of conscience, it's not an issue for anyone else. Since most people have a different view about abortion the question of the law being changed to what he would favour is a non-sequitur.

One doesn't have to agree with his views on taxation to accept that his position is a politically valid one however much one dislikes it.

And so on.

Baggs Sat 04-Aug-18 15:49:33

At least he says what he actually believes.

BTW, what's wrong with wearing a too hat to a funeral?

Baggs Sat 04-Aug-18 15:49:47

Top hat

Baggs Sat 04-Aug-18 15:51:03

Was there a church service for Margaret Thatcher's funeral? If there was and if JRM attended it, I bet he took his hat off for the bit inside the church.

varian Sat 04-Aug-18 16:06:30

JRM's personal views on abortion do not seem to prevent him profiting from a company which makes abortion pills

Baggs Sat 04-Aug-18 17:14:52

Did you read this bit of that article, V?

“Kalbe Farma obeys Indonesian law so it’s a legitimate investment and there’s no hypocrisy. The law in Indonesia would satisfy the Vatican.”

Mr Rees Mogg does not have any of his own personal money invested in the fund, and has not personally managed investments since he became an MP in 2010.
