Aldi have announced a large expansion and are about to employ a further 1000 members of staff. They aren't worried about Brexit then.

because we have been waiting for days

For what, Jura ? ...

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 21:22:18

First it was Aldi! Then it was Dad's Army! Irish borders now? What on earth.... confused

Please jura can you keep to discussing the original post? What has the Irish border got to do with Aldi? Or any other high street store in Britain? There are so many other threads about Brexit, surely you could join in on one of them and ask your questions? Please, jura; don't derail this thread, it really isn't fair to the person who began the discussion.

jura2 Thu 11-Oct-18 21:22:21

... as clear as a bell in my post.

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 21:24:31

I agree with you now lemon. It's so unfair to the person who began this thread to have it overtaken by one poster who is so obsessed by Brexit that it's completely derailed the thread. Most unfair. And rude.

I'm pretty sure that I heard that Tesco are opening a new series of stores that will aim to be in direct competition to Aldi and Lidl, lemon. They've recognised that both of the budget stores have made huge inroads to the food retail market and are setting up to take a slice of it back. I'll see if I can find a bit more on that.....

Sadly neither an Aldi or Lidl locally. Sometimes pop into Lidl that is opposite the now demolished, soon to be resurrected, Wimbledon Football Ground en route to or from friends in Tooting.

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 21:31:52

The Aldi store we have locally is rather old, a bit tatty and looks grim from the outside but the staff are lovely and very helpful and polite. But Lidl have just taken over an empty office block and will be opening there just before Christmas, just in time for serious competition!

OK, back to food. Same rules for Aldi, Lidle, Tesco or Waitrose, etc.

Push down on prices won't help either.

That sounds about right Chewbaccaas the prices in this small Tesco Extra are now so much less than the big Tesco about 40 mins away with no Aldi competition. So the new Aldi has really made a difference to the local Tesco, yipee, our gain.

Found this 're Tesco and their new budget stores:

Speculation is mounting that Tesco will launch a new discount store to compete with rivals
Aldi and Lidl.

The UK’s biggest retailer said it would be “sharing some exciting news” on 19 September at its site at Chatteris in Cambridgeshire.

No further details were provided but in July the company advertised for staff for a “new store format” in Chatteris, seeking to recruit retail assistants, retail customer service assistants and retail managers. Media reports said Tesco was close to launching a chain of discount stores in Britain called “Jack’s” after Jack Cohen, who founded a business in 1919 that became Tesco.

Independent, 11th September.

jura are you being paid by the EU commission by any chance? grin

Am getting to grips with Aldi products, quite difficult to assess their best buys, anyone recommend a certain product?

lemongrove Thu 11-Oct-18 21:42:24

Ah, that’s interesting (Jacks) wonder if it will take off?

merlotgran Thu 11-Oct-18 21:44:37

It's about ten miles from where I live. Somebody on local telly did a price comparison and Aldi was still cheaper.

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 21:47:17

Do you mean Jack's opened near you merlot?
Must admit I never go in Tesco if I can help it and can't see me shopping on Jack's either, unless they're more competitive.

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 21:50:55

The middle aisle are a great lemon! You can find all manner of things there that you never knew you needed! Most of my kitchen equipment is from there and, 10 years on, its still going strong. I once bought a steam mop from there for £17.50 And a few weeks later it started to leak. Took it back and was given a full refund, no questions asked. Even my walking boots are from there! grin

merlotgran Thu 11-Oct-18 21:53:47

Jack's in Chatteris, Chewbacca. It's about ten miles away so I won't be bothering to try it but our local news was all over it because the large premises has been empty since Tesco closed some of their stores a few years ago. It hadn't even opened!!

lemongrove Thu 11-Oct-18 21:54:05

Yes, I noticed the middle was full of random bits and bobs, will have to have a better look ( at all the things I don’t need
But may want!)

PECS Thu 11-Oct-18 21:59:00

I totally appreciate the need to keep 'weekly shopping basket' at an affordable level.
However I do worry that the prices are the result of lower wages/ supplier payments at lower end of the chain rather than reduction in big profits at the top of the chain. I have not researched this just a hunch. Hope I am wrong!

MissAdventure Thu 11-Oct-18 22:02:55

Wages are higher at Aldis than any of the other supermarkets.

So far so good!

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 22:11:10

At Christmas, Aldi have fab joints of fresh meat "for the festive season". For the last couple of years I've bought a large fresh gammon that comes in a tin foil tray, with a pouch of orange and dill sauce dressing, ready to shove in the oven. On both occassions, I've had to fight to get a slice of it because it's snaffled up by guests on our Boxing Day buffet. Last year it was £3.99. note to self, buy 2 this year

lemongrove Thu 11-Oct-18 22:14:49

Slurp, munch smile

PECS Thu 11-Oct-18 22:15:02

Good to hear Missadventure though the link I posted suggests they also employ fewer people compared to other stores.

merlotgran Thu 11-Oct-18 22:18:28

I'm sure they employ fewer people because it's a 'no frills' supermarket with an emphasis on 'speed shopping.'

MissAdventure Thu 11-Oct-18 22:36:36

That's because their staff are expected to do everything.
I know, because I've twice been shortlisted to go and spend a day being assessed to see if I'm suitable for them to employ me.
Each time I've changed my mind at the last minute, so I expect that's my big opportunity gone now. grin
