Aldi expansion

Aldi have announced a large expansion and are about to employ a further 1000 members of staff. They aren't worried about Brexit then.

Thanks for the link PECS
I notice that they are adaptable as well (thinking of Lidl, as we don't have an Aldi). At one time they just seemed to sell own brand produce, but now stock popular, if a limited range, of items.

As there is now more demand for GF foods, I notice they have a reasonable stand in our quite small Lidl.
And, of course, there are the centre aisles, full of DIY stuff that DH didn't realise he needed until he saw it, so we don't save that much if we do go there.
Then there is 'Greek week' etc etc.

There is a big difference between being poor that you have to shop at aldi and having the choice to shop at aldi to save a bit or go to a more expensive shop if you wish

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 22:50:41

Ooh yes, I'd forgotten about the "Greek weeks" and "Italian weeks" Jalima!
Has anyone else tried Aldi's Crispy Duck with Hoi sin sauce and pancakes? 20 pancakes, loads of Hoi sin sauce and a full half duck for less than £4.50. Less than half the price of a takeaway.

Actually my daughter and I cut down on trips to Aldi as we were spending too much on all the bargains.

You're absolutely right ethelbags, but even for those who are on a really tight budget and have no money to spare, shopping at Aldi or Lidl means that they get excellent value for money, excellent quality produce and their money goes that little bit further than if they'd shopped at Sainsbury's or Tesco.

Good point ethel

I had 2 queries in a post I made dated Wed 10-Oct-18 22:19:1 but I am still interested to know the answer to one in particular regarding this thread:-

jura

" Why do you think Lidl and Aldi are expanding in the UK ? You would think given your appraisal of all things Brexit related they would be running for the hills."
--

There could well come a time both Lidl and Aldi reverse their decision but until then jura I am interested in why you think Aldi and Lidl are expanding in the UK given your obvious stance.

jura2 Fri 12-Oct-18 15:36:50

Because they know that British firms will find it difficult to import food- and that prices will rise at the same time as people will be hit hard in the pocket. Massive opportunity for them to fill the gap created by the fall of British food distributors - Perfect.

Fennel Fri 12-Oct-18 15:43:10

Which is what I said on page 7 of this thread.

jura2 Fri 12-Oct-18 15:52:12

Indeed you did Fennel- but sometimes I wonder if Brexiters ever read answers, especially those they would rather ignore ;)
Aldi and Lidle are BUSINESSES - and very clever at finding gaps, opportunities and niches - which is what make them so successful.

Still, I cannot fathom why those who want Britain to regain control from the EU, would flock to Aldi and Lidle for a few quid (usually lost again by impulse buying from middle of the shelf 'never knew I could live without it' kind of bargain) and watch their own go down the pan. But it is their prerogative. Just weird.

Chewbacca Fri 12-Oct-18 16:22:34

Scuse me... there aren't 7 pages on this thread. Just saying....

Grandad1943 Fri 12-Oct-18 16:34:14

On my phone it shows as eleven pages on this thread. That probably demonstrates that the number of pages listed is determined by the page size of the device you are viewing GN on.

POGS Fri 12-Oct-18 17:07:24

jura.

" Because they know that British firms will find it difficult to import food- and that prices will rise at the same time as people will be hit hard in the pocket."

Would not Aldi and Lidl find it just as difficult to import food ?

If food prices should happen to rise would not Lidl and Aldi find that a problem also?

Why would they take the gamble of spending millions on opening new stores as they have said they will do surely they would be taking stock and putting new store openings on hold, not opening more.

Am I getting confused?

kittylester Fri 12-Oct-18 17:11:11

I have one page for this thread because that is the option I chose. One used to be able to chose the number of posts per page - not sure you can now!

As you were!!

GrannyGravy13 Fri 12-Oct-18 17:13:56

Nobody knows what will happen after 29/3/2019

One and all are speculating, including both sides of the H of P.

Aldi have made a business decision to invest in the UK, if and when food shortages happen, they will be in the same position as every other food retailer in the UK.

jura2 Fri 12-Oct-18 17:28:59

Poggs. they will be able to source food direct from EU growers, that the UK won't be able to do without tariffs. Food prices are likely to go up in the UK because of consequences of Brexit - GERMAN businesses won't be affected- they will still have 26 countries to get food from.

When are they planning to actually build btw- they have announced their 'intentions'.

Why on earth would they be in the same position as other UK food retailers? They will still be part of EU, without tariffs or restrictions.

Chewbacca Fri 12-Oct-18 17:58:24

Aldi added 76 stores in 2017, bringing the total to 762 and is targeting 1,000 stores across the UK by 2022. A further 70 store openings are planned for this year (2018). Reuters

petra Fri 12-Oct-18 19:05:37

Am I the only person that's confused with the fact that a German owned food retailer won't have to pay tariffs but German car dealerships will have to pay tariffs.

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Oct-18 19:11:01

Yes.
One is coming here apparently.

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Oct-18 19:12:34

Just weird.
grin grin grin

Nowt so queer as folk as they say.
However, the stationery 'stuff' bought today from the middle aisle was very well received by DGC.

Chewbacca Fri 12-Oct-18 19:19:59

Well don't get too self congratulatory Jalima because apparently, according to jura on another thread, it will end up as landfill or it will be scavenged with Gore's permission. I'll deck the bugger that scavengers my walking boots! grin

MawBroon Fri 12-Oct-18 19:22:08

Is Aldi/Lidl a sea or an ocean to have “isles”?

MawBroon Fri 12-Oct-18 19:25:45

Oops silly me!
Wrong thread.
However could I have thought I read it in the Aldi thread?

Cheaper food from Germany will save the day - and that middle isle is just the bee's knees

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Oct-18 19:30:00

shock Chewbacca - it was stationery - is that not acceptable? Paper, pencils, and Prittsticks (could they destroy the planet?).
I hope not, DGD is on the Eco Council at school.

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Oct-18 19:32:10

I'm on page 3 Grandad
I asked for 100 posts per page.
