Breakaway Labour MP’s
(693 Posts)A small number of back benchers will announce they are leaving the party this morning.
Chuka Umunna is one who may be among them.
Realistically David is probably saying what too many people think. Not enough people care about racism of any sort and will dismiss it as a minor issue.
For those of us for whom respect, equality and humanity cannot exist without strong opposition to all forms of racism it sounds shocking.
Sounds, and is.
Labour is an almightly mess . That doesn't mean the Tories are suddenly the good guys.
David should we then accept that your comment means you see racism/ anti-Semitism as acceptable and not a matter for concern? Shame on you!
Annie could teach you a lesson!
David is saying openly what many think. .
Denying or defending anti semetism is racist. No matter that children attending Jewish schools need protection, grave stones in Jewish cemeteries are daubed with paint .
The seven who left the party yesterday will lose their seats , a choice , remaining silent and keeping their seat or speaking out and bringing the wrath of the gentler, kinder Labour Party leaders on them.
The Labour Party is dead .
I think most people are pretty decent though and would be moved by the speeches made by the 7 yesterday.
It was quite obvious that they were sincere. Most people are centre ground in politics and not hard left or right.
Corbyn got a bounce at the last election because A he promised the students he would cancel their debts and fees. And B people were pissed off with the Tories for calling a snap election in the first place and so gave them a kicking.
It won’t happen again if Corbyn is still in charge.
Of course the Tories are not the good guys. Maybe some Tories will join the 7?? Soubery? Greaves? Because of Brexit?
I think some MPs are thinking very hard about their position now. Watch this space I think. I do wish anyone seeking to build a centrist party success and may it come soon. I have never missed voting in a GE in my long life.
I would not vote for either of the two main parties now and that grieves me when reflecting on the sacrifices others made to enable me to have the right to vote.
Sadly many are thinking but will not act, they claim ‘ I am labour so I will stay , the party is my home’ . They know they cannot bring the party back to life, it’s dead . They are staying with the Momentum party
I don’t know Anniebach I think most of the country are sick of the division of Brexit which is in turn reflected into the two main parties of far right and far left.
I know the history of new parties isn’t great but but but I am 55 and I have never in my life seen so much division or disgust with politicians.
I hope sensible moderate politicians from both sides can come together to bring the country together.
People are tired of the extremes in both parties.
Perhaps some MP’s will wait to see if they will be de selected, some will be so the far left can get more far left MP’s
Annie, what a hard decision to make. I have followed your political posts for a long time and it is clear that you have been a long standing, loyal and active member of the Labour Party. I hope that others will follow your principled example. We know what is said to happen when good men do nothing.
?
I too admire you Annie, for the decision you have made. How hard and distressing this must be after a lifetime of supporting and working for the LP through thick and thin only you can know, and I salute you for it. ?
Racism in any shape or form is quite shocking, and I'm at a loss to understand how people of any persuasion, under any circumstances can be so dreadful! Who on earth are these appalling people? How on earth could anyone in authority put up with such disgustingly cruel behaviour?!
Parsley thank you. Today I have to speak to the chair of the local party and the chair of the womens group, I did hold both positions until recently. Then friends in the Senydd and the deputy of Welsh Labour. Sad losing so many contacts , on the bright side no more canvassing ?.
My membership fee was due so I will donate it to the group who have left the party.
Well as the group are a private company, and not subject to electoral law, anyone can donate to them and it doesn’t have to be declared. Democracy, transparency, openness, much?
I was at the conference when Kinnock lambasted Derek Hatton & Co
This was my Labour Party

Firstly there isn't going to be this imaginary centrist party that some expect. Why not? Well it will need funding and substantial funding. It won't get support from the unions that's Labour, it won't get support from big business that's Conservative. If it is formed it will, like the Green Party, be very small and very limited in both its support and its influence. There are some excellent people involved in the Green Party and they have possibly exerted some influence on policies, but major change they have not acheived. So effectively by behaving as they have and "sticking to their principles" these 7 MPs have disennfranchised all their constituents and have probably paved the way for the Conservatives to remain in power. I am sure the poor, the homeless and the underpaid will be very grateful to them for their principled stance.
Of course I could be wrong and all those posting on GN about a centrist party may be prepared to put their money where their mouth is and start crowdfunding for that party.
I doubt there will be a centerist party, a party needs big money,
So the momentum party will continue claiming they are for the poor, unemployed etc and racism will be brushed aside .
I wish they'd chosen a better name than the Independent Goup. When I Google it I keep getting a group of artists, if I add politics I get local councillors! Anyone got a link I can use?
Brexit is the single most divisive issue for decades. The whole country is in a total mess and whilst it's all being fought over, other urgent issues aren't being tackled adequately, or at all. Too late to grumble we should never have had any such referendum; we are here at the cliff edge. It's a long time since the political arena has been more bitter.
Re Corbyn. I know I'm in the minority here but I believe he was and still is sincere in his aims, hopes and policies and he increased the membership of the Labour party enormously. He has been undermined since his shock election as leader and there is no need to go over old ground as to why. Our interpretations and reasons differ widely. His stance on Brexit has been and continues to be poor and out of step with the membership but I also feel the whole Remain camp needed to up their game far, far earlier in the proceedings and go into exactly why it wasn't a simple matter of rhetoric, as in Taking Back Control or some misplaced nationalistic pride. We can't be members of the EU for so long and leave without massive repercussions and ramifications and that hasn't been put over adequately by Remainers.
The Gang of 7 have a perfect right to leave, of course, but their timing is pants. And now, bang on cue, we have....*fanfare of trumpets* the Return of Derek Hatton. I'm sure I'm not the only one to be utterly bewildered by this and the timing. You couldn't make it up. Am I being overly Machiavellian or does anyone else here smell a large and rotten rat?
trisher The Green Party espouse everything I hold dear and I would support them if they had a hope in hell of getting into power. There are indeed some excellent people there. I used to be a member years ago and the only reason I left was because Jeremy Corbyn became leader and suddenly socialist policies were no longer a dirty words coming from the mouth of a Labour leader. I hear the spluttering of Anniebach as I type
but I felt as invigorated and inspired as I'd felt disgust at our country being dragged into an illegal Iraq war.
I'm going off topic again but to re-iterate: Hatton - why now? Who engineered this, and for what reason? H'mmmmm.
What I find amazing (not) about GNers who support this group is that the group are anti-democratic in that they won’t accept the referendum result, they won’t go back to their constituencies and give them the choice as to whether they want them or not as independent MPs and they won’t declare who is funding them. Apart from that, what’s not to like?
ab I was at that Conference as well
They claim they have no funding. As yet.
Rowantree I assure you I am not spluttering, I am comfortable with my decision, I am quite aware of the views of Corbynites , they choose to dismiss racism I do not
At any other time, it might have been right for the seven to resign and stand for re-election, but right now the country is on the brink of catastrophe and the last thing we need is the dsistraction of by-elections.
Brexit must be stopped for the good of our children and grandchildren, That is the top priority. Then there are so many other serious issues to be addressed as a matter of urgency..
