JRM - man of principle

He’s really stuck to what he believes in hasn’t he? His supporters must be so proud of him ( not to mention Nanny of course). So he gets the chance to change his mind but the great unwashed don’t?

I don’t ‘hate’ any politicians personally but I am doubtful about the credibility of people from very privileged backgrounds in politics."
Which rules out many from the left and the right - and centre and those pesky Liberals.

Tony Benn was mentioned earlier in the thread: Westminster School, Oxford, town house in an exclusive area of London and a family estate. Son Hilary and siblings attended very exclusive and expensive prep schools until their parents decided to send them to a comprehensive school; not just a bog-standard comprehensive school, though - it was Holland Park. At least the Benns could claim that their children were 'state-educated'.
Tony Benn, the former Cabinet minister and Labour radical who died in March this year, was too left wing for the Soviet Union, the KGB’s top agent in London has revealed
Used loopholes in the tax system (surely a very capitalist manoeuvre) to avoid inheritance tax.

But why let the truth get in the way when making a political point?

Of course, many criticisms can be levelled at Jacob Rees-Mogg too, I do not need to list them as they are in evidence on this thread.

I probably would not have voted for either btw - and am defending neither.

You can’t blame individuals for the education their parents chose for them nor for any wealth or propert they inherited. But people eg Tony B are culpable for where they decide to educate their own children and arrange their tax affairs. Btw upthread Jal the point I was making about not living in a glasshouse was about how I conduct my tax affairs. The issue about investments you brought up was a red herring.

JRM has adopted his 4th change of position on how he’ll vote - such principles. Bless him. If only he’d gone to Winchester

Anniebach Thu 28-Mar-19 11:42:35

Diane Abbott , Emily Thornbury ,Chackrabati chose not to send their children to state schools

maryeliza54 Thu 28-Mar-19 11:46:26

Yes I know that ab and imo they were wrong. What exactly was your point ?

maryeliza54 Thu 28-Mar-19 11:51:14

Correction - ET didn’t , both went to state schools

Jalima1108 Thu 28-Mar-19 11:54:05

The issue about investments you brought up was a red herring.
I don't think so - the whole point of the thread is JRM and the point was brought up about his financial dealings.
Anyone who criticises another for their financial arrangements needs to be on sure ground - and know exactly where their pensions, possibly savings, are invested.

Someone brought up Tony Benn too - that arch Euro-sceptic. Some, like Benn, realise they have been so privileged and decide to give something back and help repair the unfairness of it all - others like RM - milk it to its full extent and never pay anything back - but Benn avoided inheritance tax which would have helped the public coffers!

It would have been extremely interesting to listen to a discussion between Benn and Rees-Mogg on the EU.

Labour Minister Tony Benn (shortly before his death) emotionally explains why he fought against the European Union all his life and why we should too.

maryeliza54 Thu 28-Mar-19 12:01:19

Jal you addressed the post re investments to me but I was making points about his changing his voting record so why did you do that? So it was a red herring re what I personally
was posting about, I know you love having a pop at me but you shouldn’t get so excited about doing it that you get so muddled. Bless.

Jalima1108 Thu 28-Mar-19 12:06:12

Hes a thief who doesn’t pay taxes on his millions... decent bloke indeed
I was replying to whoever said that, if that was you then the reply was quite relevant.

Emily Thornburys children went to Dame Alice Owens School in Potters Bar. Not a school in the catchment area as that was considered, well, you know!!!!! Dame Alice is one of the oldest, and now one of the best State Schools in the country. On a par with Holland Park, so yes you've been to state school, but a selected one!!!

Jabberwok Thu 28-Mar-19 14:21:11

ummmmm!

M0nica Thu 28-Mar-19 14:25:03

Diane Abbott did send her son to a private school. He attended City of London boy's school. Funny how soon that has been forgotten.

maryeliza54 Thu 28-Mar-19 14:34:54

I would appreciate it in the future Jal if you name me in a post that you ensure that I actually made a comment relevant to what you mention. Is that all right please?

maryeliza54 Thu 28-Mar-19 14:36:55

Jab in the interests of accuracy there IS a difference between a private school and a state school even if the latter is selective.

MawBroon Thu 28-Mar-19 14:37:55

But if you are NOT named in a comment, why do you assume it is “aimed” at you maryeliza ?

maryeliza54 Thu 28-Mar-19 14:38:18

MOn no one is disagreeing about DA or has forgotten either - it was ET that ab was mistaken about

maryeliza54 Thu 28-Mar-19 14:40:19

I was named Maw by Jal as well she knows - she brought in a point that I had not posted about, so funnily enough being named meant I thought it was aimed at me- funny that isn’t it?

Yes there is a difference between state a private, but the odd thing is that some politicians are not keen on sending their offspring to the local Comp, but prefer one outside their area because?!!!! Other lesser folk of course have to take what is on offer, how strange is that?!!!!!

MawBroon Thu 28-Mar-19 15:03:20

confused GabbyG ?

GabriellaG54 Thu 28-Mar-19 16:01:25

I maintain every word of my deleted post whoever was frustrated enough to report it.
winkgrin

Anja Thu 28-Mar-19 16:39:11

Why? What did it say? Missed it!

Jalima1108 Thu 28-Mar-19 16:59:34

^ I think he’ll support May’s deal even though he claims it is worse than remaining and has voted against it , but then oust May and try to gain power with Bojo.^
crystaltipps I think you are right

I thought POGS meant I was minted and living in luxury and therefore couldn't throw my metaphorical stones.
and I thought that it was Lily65 who had said that, sorry Lily, if I did not name you, but then, apparently I do get muddled!
I must check where my very tiny annuity is invested - you never know. Or my considerable millions in the bank - are they all ethically invested by my personal banker?

quizqueen Thu 28-Mar-19 17:37:48

I am a big fan of Jacob and would be very happy to have him as my constituency MP. He said he would only vote for May's deal if the DUP agree to, which they won't.

To hate someone just because they are rich is a shameful attitude and tells you what is wrong with a lot of Labour supporters. If they come into money themselves, of course, I expect then that they give it all away to the 'deserving' poor, if that happens!!!!

Richard Branson is a big Remainer but, neither lives in the UK ( to avoid paying tax), nor does he base his company in an EU state either. His head office is in Switzerland, an non EU state (to take advantage of its good tax breaks).

Mrs May doesn't actually have a deal as a country can only start trade negotiations once they are no longer a member state of the EU. So all she had actually agreed to is to give the EU £39 billion and have a transition period of up to 2 years where things remain roughly the same but, in truth, it means the UK will never actually leave the EU because the Irish backstop will always be used as an argument in case we decide to diverge from EU rules.

The EU has allowed some French dependencies in Africa to become EU members so please do not tell me they follow all EU rules and regulations on their borders.
