The embarrassment of the Tories

“It is said that those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad”
This is a quote in a newspaper editorial, which I thought extremely apt.
The editorial is headed
“Britain is being ruled by a party that has lost its political bearings”
Goes on to outline the reckless ill discipline so evident in the government, and in particular the leak over the Huawei decision, which defied two of the fundamental rules of British government -

Collective responsibility and official secrecy.

We can rely on neither of those concepts with this dreadful government.

If a government fails in such fundamentals it has failed completely.

Monica, great point.

There are 5 in the frame potentially guilty if a crime against the state.

Gavin Williamson - has been named by several Tory MPs. He has however strongly protested his innocence. hmm
He does though have a strong reputation as an intriguer and is keen to be seen as kingmaker in the currant round of leadership contest.

Jeremy Hunt - leadership favourite, seeen as a safe pair of hands. He knows that he needs to tack to the right to win more support, but has made a number of misjudgements.

Sajid Javid- he is close to the Telegraph, where the leak appeared. His leadership ambitions are warning.

Liam Fox - not running for leadership. Not thought a likely leaker

Penny Mordant- keen to advance in cabinet, so unlikely to risk her position. Because of her passed history is a keen supporter of the British armed forces.

As you would expect there are consequences of leaking the decision to employ Huawei in constructing the 5G network in the U.K.

The Trump administration has immediately sounded its alarm, and is lobbying to stop Huawei being involved in U.K. 5G technology.

There are already signs that the U.K. government is reconsidering it’s decision. The power of Trump eh? No wonder he is keen to see Brexit. He is pretty powerless against the EU, but it is an entirely a different matter when it comes to small countries on their own.

The least enquiry is underway.

Any bets that nothing will come of it?

How kind of you, Whitewave, to supply us with all this information.
What it is to be omniscient.

Max Hastings

“Civil servants are pretty sure which minister leaked the information. They would like him to go to prison”

eazybee: don't be so sarky. Whitewave has obviously done some research ( and saved me the trouble) grin

Thank you WW for identifying the suspects

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 10:56:02

eazy what a childish post - grow up

Whitewavemark2 Sat 27-Apr-19 11:32:34

varian ???

Apparently their phones are being looked at. I wonder if the Tory party will try to suppress it, as it doesn’t look good just before the different elections coming up.

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 11:42:34

Gosh think what else might be on their phones ????

Mycatisahacker Sat 27-Apr-19 11:48:42

Probably cartoons! Surely they will find out eventually the leaker must be terrified?

One of those suspects is my MP.

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 11:53:07

Best to own up now - however they may have a burner phone ( I watch LOD don’t you know)

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 11:56:57

Anyone remember Sarah Tisdall - she went to prison for leaking. The Guardian was forced to reveal its source so why not the DT? ( rhetorical question of course)

As for Corbyn being a self confessed marxist …

My point was that there is nothing wrong with being a Marxist Paddyann. It is just a word others conjure with, as if it means something terrible. It just doesn't.

Whatever we say about the parties, or their leaders, it is what it is - broken. Because we are stuck in the mire of Brexit no one is even looking at what can be done. Both sides are looking only at the next election. This is even though it means they are both offering policies that cannot be carried through. Meanwhile May, pretty much partyless, and certainly governmentless, keeps repeating that her way is the only way. Which is true; the problem is that it is not a way anyone wants.

The Tories (as this is what the OP is about) used the referendum to try and hold their party together and they really don't care how much damage they do to the county while they fail to do that.

Far, far more important that leaving the EU at this point in time is taking a long, hard look at how our democracy is working and recognising that changes are needed and that these need to be changes the people believe in - not that the government dictates.

Mycatisahacker Sat 27-Apr-19 14:31:16

Where in the world has Marxism actually worked?

Do you really think dictatorships are better than democracy.

Mycatisahacker Sat 27-Apr-19 14:32:15

4 legs good 2 legs bad.

Nothing works better than democracy for all its flaws.

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 14:44:35

I don’t think there’s anywhere in the world where any ideological belief system works as a driver of or a system of government - political or religious. Dictatorship takes many forms. See current thread on SA for example.

It is dreadful and when I look at the alternative of a self confessed Marxist and an equally inept shadow cabinet..

Spot on mycatisahacker.

Our PARLIAMENT is dreadful, a complete shambles with one or two exceptions. Corbyn or Cable aren't what we need either!

We are between the Devil and the deep blue sea, and never have I known a time when I have felt we really have scraped the bottom of the barrel in terms of having lousy, duplicitous MPs..

Corbyn and Momentum leading the country leaves me and many others feeling terrified, May can't go on and the Conservative Party will be annihilated at the next GE, without doubt.

Let's just hope by then we have an alternative to the two party system. If the Brexit Party grows (fingers crossed) and puts together a manifesto they could be a good bet at the next GE - if only to provide an alternative to the two main parties who are excellent at kicking a can down the road, and trying to justify it, but little else.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 27-Apr-19 14:58:24

I shall be interested to read the manifesto if Farage every produces one. He has absolute control I believe. Such an authoritarian.

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 15:01:24

If the Brexit Party is the answer then we are all truly f***ed

lemongrove Sat 27-Apr-19 15:06:07

Really good posts ( all of them) Mycatisahacker like you I cannot understand the slavish devotion to any one side and to Corbyn in particular, the man is hopeless.
The Conservatives are busy tearing themselves apart, but Labour is equally divided, it’s a bad time for politics.

Dinahmo Sat 27-Apr-19 15:16:30

Anniebach - can't you think of any more recent misdemeanours with which to attack the Labour Party? Both Aberfan and the Profumo affair happened over 50 years ago.

Aberfan was a dreadful disaster, don't get me wrong.

Profumo (a Tory) admitted to lying a few weeks after his original denial and resigned. At least he did the right thing. There's very few politicians who would do that now.

Dinahmo Sat 27-Apr-19 15:19:24

I doubt very much whether Farage will be able to put forward a manifesto with which to fight a general election. He has stood for Parliament 7 times so far - is it going to be eighth time lucky?
