Horrified by Alabama Abortion law
(695 Posts)I am horrified by the new ruling that makes abortion illegal in the state of Alabama with not even exceptions for rape or incest victims .
The only exception is if the mothers life is endangered . Am I right in thinking this new law puts women back 100 years with no ability to make decisions about their own bodies ?
What are your thoughts ?
Mycat I know I know I know but it’s hard not to respond to utter crap <note to self must try harder>
Women should have control over their own bodies
Yes indeed and that includes not getting pregnant when they have no means to support a child and expect the state to step in.
It also includes women who decide that a child would hamper their career or put the kibosh on a relationship so they opt for abortion.
I know you reply to my crap sometimes
Seriously though it’s enough to make your blood boil isn’t it!
God help American women. Honestly what is going on there!
Sometimes you see sepsis in women at term. We manage it with antibiotics.
Oh just fottfsof GG - try Canada.
What’s happening in the states is far right populism. How fortunate it could never happen here??????
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Crime in Alabama 2015 report:
1,988* rapes were reported by county and municipal agencies in Alabama in 2015. This is a 5 percent increase from 2014.
The rape rate was 40.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, both males and females.
863 rapes were cleared for a 43 percent clearance rate.
On the average, there were 5.4 rapes reported per day in 2015.
232 persons were arrested for rape with 12 percent being juveniles.
49 percent of those arrested were white and 97 percent were male.
56 percent of the rape victims in Alabama were white; 30 percent were black, and 14 percent were other or unknown. 23 percent of all rape victims were 13-, 14-, 15- and 16-year-olds.
In 79 percent of the rapes, the victim and offender knew or were related to each other; in 4 percent, the victim and offender were strangers, and in 17 percent, the relationship was unknown.
44 percent of the rapes involved a white victim and white offender, 10 percent, a white victim and black offender, 28 percent, a black victim and black offender, 4 percent, a black victim and white offender. In 14 percent, the race of the offender was unknown or other.
In 81 percent of the rapes, hands, fists and/or verbal threats were used to exert force upon a victim; guns were used in 3 percent, and knives in 2 percent of the rapes.
75 percent of the rapes occurred in a residence; 5 percent in a highway, street or alley; 3 percent in a hotel or motel; and 3 percent in a field or woods.
*Data reported in this publication represents rapes collected under the new definition used for 2013 reporting. Rape is the forcible sexual assault of a male or female victim, including attempts. The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program has expanded the definition of rape for reports submitted beginning in 2013 to include male and female victims and other forms of sexual assault. Prior to 2013, Rape was the forcible carnal knowledge of a female victim only, and did not include sodomy offenses.

Again, because it needs repeating:
In 79 percent of the rapes, the victim and offender knew or were related to each other-
Alabama is inviting and supporting rape-
So to sum up from various posts:
we should only have sex if it could result in a pregnancy, contraception not acceptable, abortion a total no-no.
there are acceptable and non-acceptable reasons for wanting to terminate a pregnancy, depending on whether you're Mother Theresa or a bit more free with your favours.
some ( come on what percentage?) women use abortion as a form of contraceptive.
The only questions to be asked of any woman seeking an abortion is "do you want this, are you aware what you're doing, has anybody pressured you into this decision?" As long as the procedure can be carried out safely, then there is no reason not to proceed. As for the staff that "have" to attend, I thought we in the UK at least had an opt-out for people who would find it too difficult for religious reasons or whatever.
Just because you as an individual don't want/agree with abortion, what gives you the right to impose your views on others? Suppose I think sex should only take place between married heterosexual couples on a Friday night, would it be OK for me to have this enforced by law? Of course not. Nobody as far as I know is seeking to make abortion compulsory. Don't want an abortion, then don't have one, simples!
I am horrified at what is happening in Alabama.
How many people who were raped, male or female support this -- I wonder ..
Because if they every experienced:
What it's like to have their lives threatened
What it's like to have not only a penis but other objects
forcibly shoved up their vagina or anus
They wouldn't support such the law- I guarantee, the people who support this law never even came close to being raped-
Goodness. Imagine if all woman stopped having sex if they didn’t want to have a baby. I wonder how long this bill written by and for crazy fundamentalist Christians would last? (I’m Anglican leaning to agnostic btw)
My husband wouldn’t have been happy if the tap had been shut off after we had our sons and decided we didn’t want and more children
Sex is sexy, and natural and trying to put all the blame on women for getting pregnant when it takes two to tango is ridiculous.
The sad thing is it will be poor women who can’t move out of state that will be affected by this awful bill.
Alabama has the fourth highest infant mortality rate amongst all the states and the highest death penalty rate - human life is sacred says the white Evangelical Christian
First of all, I'm not an evangelical Christian.
Secondly, I don't support the death penalty either, except in rare cases.
Third, I'm not from Alabama.
But you support the death penalty for desperate women with unsafe abortions. Pretty hypocritical that - RC are you then? I know you live in Canada
Totally disagree with this dreadful law. Her body, her choice and yes, her rights above those of the foetus. Women should have reproductive rights, full stop.
There are a vast range of reasons why a woman should want a termination. Provided she has had counselling and advice and offers of alternatives prior to her decision, the final say should be hers alone. She certainly should not be made to bear a child she doesn't want. Every child should be wanted.
Secondly, I don't support the death penalty either, except in rare cases.
So you do support the death penalty. Its not really a grey area.
I don't think the death penalty is an appropriate response to abortion.
I DO think abortion should be illegal.
I DO think abortion should be illegal.
= I DO think that women who have abortions should suffer at the hands if backstreet abortionists and have zero support and follow up care.
We know that abortions happen whether they are legal or illegal. So banning them is all about punishing women not about STOPPING abortions from happening.
If you wanted to STOP abortions, it would be mens liberties you would be looking to reduce/remove...
Unfortunately, some children are "wanted" for their young bodies -- "wanted" for sex, "wanted" for procreation-
The rights of a living child have been forfeited for the rights of an unborn child-
It's legal child abuse-
Mothers support this-
Mother inlaws support this-
Daughters support this-
Sisters support this-
Sister inlaws support this-
Grandparents support this-
Do you want a woman who supports such abuse to babysit your children? Perhaps there now should be a full disclosure law, to protect children from individuals who
would allow them to be abused-
Wherever do you get the idea that I support child abuse? I don't. I teach about child abuse. I have seen a toddler who was a victim of sexual abuse.
To accuse me of such a thing is disgusting.
agnurse, you've the right to your beliefs, to exercise your rights and express yourself-
But the fact of the matter is I didn't mention you specifically in my post-
Anyone who supports these right to life laws do teach about child abuse -- that it is not only acceptable, but lawful-
The rights of women are seriously under threat. Alabama won't be the only state to do this. We should all be up in arms about this. Bad enough that the women of NI have never even had the right to abortion but this is a new low where women who did have that right are now having it taken away. This is frightening. What next? The right to vote??
This law, and those like it, reveal each supporters deeply-seated ignorance and proclivity for human torture, especially acts which physically disfigure and further traumatize innocent female children -- all under the guise of protecting the unborn -
It's deliberate, legal, infliction of not only rape but pregnancy and labor on precious, young bodies -
It's archaic, dark ages behavior-
It's abuse-
Less than 2% of abortions are done for rape or abuse.
