Horrified by Alabama Abortion law

I am horrified by the new ruling that makes abortion illegal in the state of Alabama with not even exceptions for rape or incest victims .

The only exception is if the mothers life is endangered . Am I right in thinking this new law puts women back 100 years with no ability to make decisions about their own bodies ?

What are your thoughts ?

Eglantine21 Wed 15-May-19 21:33:47

Evangelical Christian.

I think agnurse is Canadian.

Am I right?

Eglantine21 Wed 15-May-19 21:35:46

oh maybe Catholic living in Vancouver.

Now I’m being as silly as she is......

NanaandGrampy Wed 15-May-19 21:40:10

That is exactly what I thought Jane10 .

Mycatisahacker Wed 15-May-19 21:43:51

Well stay there!!!

We are more civilised

Mycatisahacker Wed 15-May-19 21:45:17

But I hope you and your husband are in know way in a position to influence laws where you are.

DillytheGardener Wed 15-May-19 21:47:52

I agree, I think the best thing to do with these ‘interlopers’ like Agnurse is to ignore them when they make their nasty posts. Same as you do to children when they are being naughty. They’ll/she’ll soon get bored if no one takes the bait ignores their/her awful word vomit and maybe find a more age appropriate site to visit. hmm

sodapop Wed 15-May-19 21:52:43

I think four other States are about to pass laws banning abortion once a foetal heartbeat can be detected.
Seems to be some confusion over the rape and incest exclusions, some reports say they are not excluded.

absent Wed 15-May-19 21:54:45

It is noteworthy that Alabama has the second highest rate of child mortality in the United States, so perhaps not so pro-life as all that.

sodapop Wed 15-May-19 21:56:44

I also find agnurse's views abhorrent but she is entitled to express them in the same way we are. Not sure why you refer to her as an 'interloper' Dilly.

Mycatisahacker Wed 15-May-19 22:01:07

Of course because they have so much love gut the unborn child but once it’s born no medical care no money and no giving a shit!

NanaandGrampy Wed 15-May-19 22:07:03

I saw this and thought how evocative it was.

DillytheGardener Wed 15-May-19 22:07:15

Hi sodapop. I am also for freedom of opinion. But as Agnurse is neither a grandmother nor middle aged perhaps another site would be a better fit for her.

I have seen her aggressive way of giving her opinion, upset and scare off many gransnet users. I’m nearly in the boat of going off it as I’m sick of seeing her nasty comments to members.
Not everything needs to be positive of course, but some semblance of polite behaviour would be in order. I wonder if she is this pugnacious in real life, or just safely behind a screen. Anyway I’m adding oxygen to her fire.

Mycatisahacker Wed 15-May-19 22:09:07

Yes I have come up against her on mumsnet

Mycatisahacker Wed 15-May-19 22:10:23

And she doesn’t frighten me!!! Don’t like bullies never did

DillytheGardener Wed 15-May-19 22:12:33

Thank you Mycatisahacker, I think either Gransnet needs to step in, or we need to start completely ignoring her. And warn new members to ignore her to. She’s using members at their most vulnerable to get a rise by posting nasty comments. The definition of an internet troll.

maryeliza54 Wed 15-May-19 22:13:37

sodapop why defend her? She can defend herself - she’s a misogynist who thinks women should be forced to give birth and you spring to her defence - shame on you.

jura2 Wed 15-May-19 22:32:13

Mycatsahacker 'I don’t care is a woman uses abortion as a method of contraception '

I am an atheist - but sorry, I do care. Because a doctor has to do it, and staff have to assist her/him. I am 100% for safe abortion on demand- and 100% for people taking responsibility for contraception. This is not what this thread is about though- and I am beyond disgusted at the Alabama situation.

maryeliza54 Wed 15-May-19 22:37:55

My link on abortion myths jura deals with the abortion-as- contraception canard

Mycatisahacker Wed 15-May-19 22:43:46

Dilly spot on

jura2

Getting a tad bored with you seemingly following me round the boards.

So I have had an abortion and as a nursing sister I have assisted at both terminations and helped bring much loved babies into the world.

Nurses and doctors who judge are in the wrong job so I hope you are not one. You don’t sound like one thankfully just projecting

For me it’s all about the woman’s choice and what’s not my business is how she got pregnant or if she wants to continue with it.

I don’t get to judge if she the Virgin Mary or a prostirute

I don’t judge if it’s her first abortion or her 5th. It’s not my business or yours.

Mycatisahacker Wed 15-May-19 22:46:28

And actually I am a Christian not an atheist.

DillytheGardener Wed 15-May-19 22:57:30

Mycatisahacker, thank you. And on a moral note I agree.
Woman’s bodies are their own. After I had my sons, that was more than enough, financially and emotionally. Statistically more abortions are carried out on woman who have already have had children. And that would have been me if I’d accidentally fell pregnant again, I did not want more.
Also whatever the reason, nobody should be forced to go through with a pregancy, we should have autonomy over our own bodies. If you don’t want to have an abortion, that’s your choice, but what we do with ours is our choice.
My dil had a failed miscarriage where not everything passed but her pregnancy tests still came up positive, if she was unable to have had the termination she would have died of septis like that poor woman in Ireland.

agnurse Wed 15-May-19 23:11:56

That poor girl in Ireland died from mismanaged sepsis. An abortion wasn't necessary.

If the baby is already gone it's not an abortion.

maryeliza54 Wed 15-May-19 23:27:07

agnurse as usual you don’t know what you’re talking about. And for the record she wasn’t a girl she was a woman.

“But Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, a professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at St. George’s University of London who led the investigation into the Halappanavar case, suggested otherwise in testimony to a government committee.

“One of the things which was holding their hands back while they were looking after her,” he said, according to The Irish Times, “was this Eighth Amendment issue because the baby’s heartbeat was there.”

Ms. Barnes, the medical student, said: “It was such tragedy of epic proportions that doctors were unable to provide basic care for her because red tape tied their hands. I think what it really did was, it woke up young people, particularly young women, to how easily something like that could happen.”

Labaik Wed 15-May-19 23:34:01

Apologies if this has been mentioned already but isn't Alabama one of the American States that still allows child marriage?

absent Wed 15-May-19 23:35:07

The Governor of Alabama has just signed the proposal into law.
