Ageing disgracefully

Reading about one or two of the vets at the memorial gatherings I was disappointed and yes, disgusted to read that one nudged HM the Queen and made inappropriate remarks to Melanie Trump.
Now I know they are oldies but for heaven's sake, does that mean such behaviour can be overlooked or thought of as acceptable? I think not.
It's just grubby behaviour not chuckleworthy or nudge-nudge wink-wink.
My dad would never have crossed the line thinking his age would make it ok.
It isn't.

Both ladies play an important roll in their country. Both showed dignity and compassion at an occasion that was to honour those who paid the ultimate sacrifice that others would live.
Nonsensical that both ladies, or any one, with a sense of compassion would find this comment /action from an elderly person who was witness to the horrors endured by thousands as offensive / inappropriate.

NotSpaghetti I didn't know what to make of his reply. "Oh I'm sure you could take it on"! (About his wife!!!) grin

Minxie
Not always the elderly when I recently witnessed a group of ' just out of nappies brigade' making suggestive remarks. they thought hilarious. to a waitress attempting to just do her job where myself and friend had hoped to have an enjoyable meal.
To my disgust the manager, when I complained, referred to it as 'harmless'.

Danni Brenda is the name Private Eye have for HM the Queen.
Princess Margaret was Yvonne. grin

“He’s old”
“He’s another generation”

Just the same as “boys will be boys”. An excuse for men to do whatever they want, And girls just need to get over it. Ah, misogyny. Just by fighting in a war you do not earn the right to treat women poorly.

Ftr, It’s not like people stayed in the 40s and 50s and suddenly time worked here. They have seen the change happening, and people know right from wrong. It’s not PC, its kindness.

Imagine if some old dear had made a pass at Donnie.

Gonegirl Fri 07-Jun-19 18:49:33

He didn't exactly "make a pass" at Melania.

Elvive Fri 07-Jun-19 18:58:26

I didn't say he did. A little Friday evening musing....

janeainsworth Fri 07-Jun-19 19:05:06

Summerlove I think we need to be tolerant of old people, especially those who were prepared to give their lives for our freedom.

Pat1949 Fri 07-Jun-19 19:38:45

I think it's probably dementia and I'm sure the ladies involved would have realised this. My father in law went to live in a care home at 90 and some of the things he said to the staff, had he been younger, he would have been locked up for. This was not the way my father in law was. His dementia made him do inappropriate things.

Gonegirl Fri 07-Jun-19 19:42:16

She would have been alright Elvive, so long as she had her hand on her ha'penny. wink

Gonegirl Fri 07-Jun-19 19:43:42

He was Not suffering from dementia (IMO). Just behaving like the lad he's probably been all his life. Harmless.

sodapop Fri 07-Jun-19 19:47:23

For goodness sake what a lot of fuss about a very harmless comment. The poor man has now been diagnosed with dementia by Gransnet. There has also been more misogyny and misandry on Gransnet than this veteran has ever shown.

janeainsworth Fri 07-Jun-19 19:51:42

Well said sodapop

blondenana Fri 07-Jun-19 19:55:39

Having just looked at the link, i think Melania and Donald were more amused than offended
It is true though that too much of what old people do or say is blamed on dementia these days

Callistemon Fri 07-Jun-19 20:48:31

Oh, for goodness' sake
He probably thought he was being charming about a beautiful woman - he wasn't being sleazy at all.

I didn't see the nudge, perhaps the veteran was a bit shaky on his feet.

How to introduce a sour note into a memorable occasion.
However, I suppose this man put his life on the line so that you now have the freedom to criticise him, Gaby

sodapop
I agree.

What a load of misandry and pomposity on this thread.
It was a harmless remark.

Avor2 Fri 07-Jun-19 21:13:06

Please !!! let me see what I can be offended about tomorrow !!??!! I bet she has heard worse in her lifetime .

GrannyGravy13 Fri 07-Jun-19 21:18:37

Political correctness gone mad!!!

Daisyboots Sat 08-Jun-19 00:41:53

I doubt that the man has dementia which seems to be the popular answer to everything these days for anything out of the ordinary in anyone over 60. Until someone said what he actually said I thought it must have been something smutty but no just rather forward. I expect he has behaved like that all of his life. I am sure we have all known someone like that in our lives.

janipat Sat 08-Jun-19 01:56:27

I ( for once) haven't read the whole thread, but given that Melania Trump was a nude model can she really be surprised at inappropriate remarks??? For goodness sake, how many other nude models obtained "genius" visa entries to USA???? And they (Republicans) dare to condemn Michelle Obama for "bare arms" lol lol

cas58 Sat 08-Jun-19 07:39:11

Actually I thought it was harmless and quite sweet actually.

DanniRae Sat 08-Jun-19 08:41:03

Thank you Jane for explaining who 'Brenda' is!

GabriellaG54 Sat 08-Jun-19 09:11:48

janipat

I was an occasional 'life' model in LSA during my late teens/early 20s and there were no 'inappropriate' remarks made in class so no, women shouldn't have to grin and say 'It's just men's behaviour', whatever their age.

AcornFairy Sat 08-Jun-19 10:02:12

GabriellaG54 What is "inappropriate" to one person is not necessarily so to another. Bring on the wolf whistles!
