Let’s stop pretending the referendum was illegal eh?

So many times, over the last 3 years, those who voted to Remain in the EU disparaged the result - with posters often asking those of us who voted Leave if we were happy knowing the voting system was rigged/illegal?

Well this today, a quote from the ex LbDem Remainer:

“Much though I understand why people want to reduce that eruption in British politics to some kind of plot or conspiracy, some use of new social media through opaque means, I’m afraid the roots to British Euroscepticism go very, very deep…”

Nick Clegg, now Facebook's head of global affairs, rubbishing the idea that the Russians delivered Brexit through hijacking the social media platform.

Every time I look at gransnet I read the comments of the same moaning old Europhile grannies going on about illegal referendum this and illegal referendum that. The fact is, Brexit is coming whether you like it or not, and if the latter I shall happily wave to you at the airport as you fly off to Spain or France or Italy or wherever else in your European Nirvana you choose to spend your last days.

Your comment just shows how little you understand about the realities of Brexit- doh sad

jura2 Sun 30-Jun-19 14:15:03

Exactly Maizie - they and we were all conned sad

Our own Sovereign Laws state that a Referendum is, and can only ever be, other than Advisory. Not even the PM can ignore our own Laws, and go against them.

Kapitan. ???

Which particular Brexit did you vote for Kapitan and Jabber- there is a whole selection out there, from Mrs May's Deal and No Deal (which was NEVER on the cards during the campaign- as we were promised a great deal, the best deal, the easiest deal, the 'we hold all the cards and they need us mor than we need them deal', etc, etc.)

Jabberwok Sun 30-Jun-19 14:27:40

So why didn't MP's challenge it? Why did they overwhelmingly sign up up for article 50?! Why did the two main parties go into a GE on the promise of delivering brexit? Perhaps they didn't understand what they were signing up for? Like us dim old brexiteers!!! Had it been the other way round, would it still have been illegal etc etc? I doubt it very much, any objections would have been firmly squashed, the small majority would have been just fine, any lies, manipulation or dastardly deeds glossed over, and all would have been well!!

jura2 Sun 30-Jun-19 14:31:26

All is not well - for sure.

Maizie explained, a few posts back.

Jabberwok Sun 30-Jun-19 15:05:36

She didn't explain why politicians voted for something that they clearly, fundamentally disagreed with! Why would you do that?!

Kapitan Sun 30-Jun-19 15:19:31

The question we were asked was:

Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?

I voted to leave. That was the type of Brexit I wanted.

Of course, you ask a simple question, and remainers want to give a complicated response.

Another reason is the baby boomers who live in their large family homes rather than downsizing when they no longer needed the large house. This has prevented younger families from moving up the ladder and so they have extended their homes
Dinahmo that is what we did with our barely affordable London home but, on selling, we were able to buy a 'large family home' elsewhere. If there was anything suitable for our needs now we would downsize. But there is not.

Some LAs are selling houses for £1 and loaning money for renovations so that young people can get on the housing ladder - it is still possible in some areas and has been so for the past 10 years too.

Unfortunately John Prescott and Yvette Cooper demolished many perfectly good family homes, some lovingly renovated, under the Pathfinder scheme, against the will of the owners.

what a wasted opportunity.

Callistemon Sun 30-Jun-19 15:23:04

And - why should people move from the home they love and from the area where they feel settled?

I presume under a Labour Government we will be forced out by their new proposals anyway.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 30-Jun-19 15:33:03

We have been in our large family home for 31 years, why should we move out?

We need all our bedrooms for when the GC come for frequent sleepovers, for when other friends and relatives come to stay for a week/end.

Dinahmo Sun 30-Jun-19 18:21:48

No one is saying that you must move out - I certainly haven't.

Alexa Sun 30-Jun-19 18:40:27

The referendum question was not explicit so people did not understand exactly what they were voting for. Not everybody is an economist.

MaizieD Sun 30-Jun-19 18:55:53

At the time Parliament voted to invoke A50 the revelations about the Leave Campaigns' illegalities and the involvement of Cambridge Analytica with their use of illegally harvested facebook data had not been made. I think that Parliament voted for A50 in good faith at the time. 'Respecting' the result.

The fact that the government subsequently knew that the result was unsafe because of the corruption and illegalities (as May's Counsel made clear last year) yet pressed on regardless, when they really could have halted the process to at least allow for an enquiry, was, IMO, grossly irresponsible.

jura2 Sun 30-Jun-19 19:36:41

This, exactly.
