I know we knew this would happen but it didn't stop my heart sinking when it was confirmed. It's not even about party politics. It's about him. The country is in such a terrible position and the thought of him being the one trying to solve all the problems is farcical at best and utterly depressing.

Boris' s first success:

He's livened up Gransnet!

Gonegirl Wed 24-Jul-19 17:04:54

Really?!!! confused

Callistemon Wed 24-Jul-19 17:09:08

Several threads all going hammer and tongs!

He's not going to be boring

jura2 Wed 24-Jul-19 17:10:20

oh I am quite sure 'livening up GN' and 'not being boring' is going to save the country - hurrah sad

Fantastic uplifting speech outside no 10 by our new Prime Minister at last someone who believes in the UK. ??

GabriellaG54 Wed 24-Jul-19 18:05:15

I like the fact that Trump says it like it is and sticks up for the forgotten majority.
We here need to do the same instead of having to wear gags.

aggie Wed 24-Jul-19 18:09:50

Dear Mr Trump , he says it like it is .......................... then says it like it is 10 minutes later but from a different angle ?
A weather cock is more consistent than Dear Mr President

I'm willing to give Boris a chance ( for 3 months anyway), although I thought Theresa was initially sincere about Brexit and look where that got us.

No one on here ever seems to blame the EU for the negotiations going badly. The Irish backstop is just a made up problem as the UK is already aligned to all the EU rules and regulations anyway. The EU also has many other borders with non EU countries-on the East and also in Africa, where there are French Dependencies which are member states by default of being French!!), and no one ever mentions any trading problems or difficulties with collecting taxes on their borders.

It's all a big con to stop us from leaving because the EU is terrified our (potential) success as an independent country will incite other member states to want to leave their wonderful 'club' too.

varian Wed 24-Jul-19 18:24:44

It has been so impressive over the last three years just how wonderful the club is. The sensible 27 other member countries of the EU have shown conclusively that we are better together than apart.

maddyone Wed 24-Jul-19 18:47:50

Obviously that’s what you believe varian, could you give us details of the way the ‘....sensible 27 other member countries of the EU have shown conclusively that we are better together than apart.’
Thank you.

says it like it is

Says what?

I suggest those of you sneering about 'rich boy and his rich mates' and 'blustering buffoon' check out Boris Johnson's speech outside Number Ten today.

First time I have heard it all and what a cracking and impressive speech it was!

He has a mountain to climb, but he spoke about all my concerns and more! He spoke about the less fortunate and looking after the whole of the UK. I feel very lifted by his optimism and drive. He gave us a different Boris today, one I have not seen before, and I sincerely hope he retains that gravitas as he moves us all forward. It's quite ironic that the UK needs THIS 'momentum; (not the hard left wing one!) after the stagnation of the last three Brexit-laden years.

Nicely done.

I seem to remember the same posters gushing with excitement over TMay and her marvellous speech.

Nico97 Wed 24-Jul-19 20:08:02

With you all the way Day6 - just what's needed now ??

jura2 Wed 24-Jul-19 20:15:33

oh 'cracking' 'dude' sad

maddyone Wed 24-Jul-19 20:23:47

Excellent speech, full of optimism.

GracesGranMK3 Wed 24-Jul-19 20:25:06

Well, at least all those who are rooting so hard for him, that they feel it gives them permission to call others whatever comes to mind today know, what they've got. They know he is a liar on any occasion he has opportunity, they know he is reckless with others lives and they know he is inept and rarely serious.

We then we have Dominic Cummings.
He appears to be aiming for a general election listening to his speech preparing the ground so that anyone but him gets the blame. Big words in the speech - I wonder how many days those promises will last. I imagine he will have conversations with all the main players and then come back, tell us they won't do what he wants and find someway to get into an election.

GracesGranMK3 Wed 24-Jul-19 20:27:06

"And then we have Dominic Cummings" should have been the at the end. No idea how it moved.

Hattiehelga Wed 24-Jul-19 21:02:58

Gone girl, how do eighty year olds act according to you ? A bit naughty to generalise. DH and I turned eighty this year and we were talking only today about age perception. It's been sweltering here today and we were out all-day - bank business, non food shopping, grocery shopping. DH remarked how well we had done. We regularly have grandchildren to stay - four aged 5-10. We agreed that we don't think about age and just carry on as we always have. Most of our eighty plus friends are like us.

Gonegirl Wed 24-Jul-19 21:16:07

Good grief. Anything for an argument eh?

Not going there.

shirleyhick Wed 24-Jul-19 21:20:00

I happen to like him and if he gets us out this mess it will be a job well done. Sorry I voted leave and leave we should with or without a deal. To many people are scare mongering.

Lancslass1 Wed 24-Jul-19 21:38:28

Boris peddles optimism and that is what we need right now.
Good luck to him.

growstuff Wed 24-Jul-19 21:45:09

quizqueen, You really don't seem to understand the unique situation of the Irish border (or don't care).

growstuff Wed 24-Jul-19 21:46:22

What we could do with right now are some solutions to real issues, not crazed optimism.

growstuff Wed 24-Jul-19 21:49:22

Theresa May gave an impressive (and uncharacteristic) speech on her first day as PM.
