It's pie in the sky.

Johnson and Brexit
(1001 Posts)In his statement Johnson underlined his pledge to ditch the Irish backstop, and ramp up preparations for no deal, and to leave on 31st October regardless of what happens.
Mays withdrawal agreement has been binned, however in a phone call Juncker signalled the EU27s intention of sticking with the deal already negotiated by the British Government. This includes the backstop.
Juncker told Johnson that the EU would be prepared to alter the political declaration.
Ireland has declared itself as “alarmed”
Barnier signalled that Johnson’s rhetoric almost certainly meant that the U.K. was going into a GE.
Expect a huge public information campaign and a large level of spending in preparation for no deal.
I think the border guards figure is 500
I'm going out now, too...
yep- same here. Off to swim in the lake (hmmm which one not decided yet, and in France or here??? decisions, decisions) some things are priceless.
BJ is also going to create free ports that will generate jobs in ports around country but a large one in Middlesbrough. The North East needs job development and regeneration. I say well done to him and previouslycwe could not do this as member of EU.
Sterling is now doing worse than (project fear the headbangers said ) was originally predicted by project reality.
oh do give up newnanny you have obviously swallowed the propaganda hook line and sinker, but if you read the posts on here, you will see that most of us haven't, even those who voted Brexit. Johnson is a chancer and charlatan, and his cabinet have sold their souls and their self respect to be part of what they hope will be the winning team. All of the promises he has made about the North East and everywhere else could have been done while member of the EU, but why let facts get in the way. Bloody hell, even The Times is talking about difficulties ahead, just where do you get your fairy stores touching faith in Johnson's so called government from?

Gill is completely right Newnanny. You have got to the belief in flying pigs stage.
Free ports have been shown to move work rather than create it and the few jobs that are created are low paid ones. I think the North East wants proper modern industrial growth not pie in the sky. How much do you think those who lose the jobs in other parts of the country will thank you for this scheme? Mind you it does mean Johnson and his friends can become even more wealthy as goods come into these ports, pay no tax, are processed and exported again. I'm sure they will have shares in that.
And of course, everything that comes into these free ports is perfectly legal. No laundering of goods by criminals, oh no...
Why not turn the whole of the |UK into a massive free port? Oh, hang on! That's what we already have.
Those new border guards aren’t going to get much training if they’ve all got to be recruited and ready by November. Who is going to fill the posts? Just read that the army is 25% below desired numbers as they can’t recruit enough young people - don’t think being a low paid border guard would be much off a career choice for many, Its all very well promising the moon on a stick, but not if it’s undeliverable,
As for the Freeport idea- it’s found to be a huge draw for criminal activity - smuggling and money laundering. It’s a coverup for the loss of thousands of jobs we are facing. We already have free trade with many countries as EU members, putting vast sums into some new dodgy deal not a great idea. None of these “great” ideas stand a chance of getting off the ground without a GE,
That about sums it up Elegran.
Yes, it was a democratic vote advising parliament at the time but since then people keep saying that things which are actually "politics" are about democracy; they are not. Cameron saying this was once in a life-time vote and would be carried out" or whatever it is that people spout and say we, therefore, must carry it out because it is "democratic" are simply wrong and should know they are wrong.
After the referendum recommending we leave it is what is passed in parliament that is democracy in action, not a politicians promises wherever they occur.
Democracy is one thing politics quite another and politics are the art of the possible, not the improbable or impossible.
Exactly, crystaltipps. Teesport is already the third largest port in the UK. Most of the imports and exports are duty-free because they go and come from the EU. Nissan wouldn't be able to function as it does without Teesport.
My understanding is that the free port idea in Middlesbrough is a sop to the people in the area who lost their jobs when the steelworks closed and would use the land where the now redundant steelworks are located.
If developed, it would undoubtedly take business from Teesport, which is already going to struggle if Nissan relocates. All it would do is shift the problem a couple of miles along the coast.
Anyone else missing all the news either real or fake now parliment is on the summer recess?? I know i am, i love it all, its exciting to see who does what , says what and who gets found out. Skullduggery at it's best. Obviously there are very serious issues which need to be dealt with but i love watching the televised sessions and seeing how they have a go at each other and try to outdo each other. Can't wait to see Boris doing the Prime Ministers questions.
travelsafar agree with you. I miss my daily dose of shouting at the telly.
No travelsofar. I don't find it fun, interesting but not fun.
You may find this impassioned speech makes up for some of what you are missing. It certainly makes me smile.

Were the vote to 'remain' and with 'normal service' having been resumed, no Boris, just another general election with labour back in power. Does that sound better?
Maizie, Just checked and you're right about 500 border guards. Question still remains how they're going to be recruited and trained in time. My money's still on G4S or Capita being handed the contract and I'm sure people can remember how well they did during the London Olympics. The army had to be brought in. Oh no! The army can't recruit either. Ooops!
Various parts of the Army are 40% under their required level.
Just thinking about that and the sabre-rattling coming from Putin added to the lack of understanding that bringing the Eastern European countries into the EU is a protective barrier for us.
Does anyone have an AC or GC between 18 and 30?
Is an AC a child? I have 2 between the ages of 18 and 30.
Dinahmo
Adult child Minniemoo. I am sure the Army/Navy/RAF will be grateful for their services if we have to return to conscription. We have three grandchildren in that age group.
We may subsidise some of the Eastern European countries but there has always been a good reason for encouraging them to join.
So this is the guy Johnson has put in charge of the Treasury - our taxes.

I have just seen on news that BJ is going to stop violent prisoners being released after serving only half their sentence. Also more stop and search powers to crack down on knife crime. I am definitely going to vote for him in a GE. He is getting things done. He has only been in power for a little over two weeks. I wish others would hive him a chance.
