The economy.

This morning at Gatwick.

The pound is at parity with the dollar. This has NEVER happened in its history.

The pound is worth now about 87p against the euro.

The implication for the economy is dire.

Lessismore Quote [Sorry but what does Europe need from the UK by way of trade?] End Quote

Lessismore, Europe requires Britains vehicle manufactoring industry, and with a no-deal Brexit, that vehicle production will be transferred to Europe, sadly.

Vauxhall signalled such a move only yesterday. However, the Brexitiers will continue with their heads in the sand, caring nothing for the many thousands of jobs that will be lost.

Brexiteers=those looking for a utopia that simply is not there.

Momof3 Tue 30-Jul-19 17:11:55

@Urmstongran

Do you not care about anyone else other than yourself.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 30-Jul-19 17:11:57

Today my daughter has been told that her job is going to Europe. She is a genetic scientist by training although has been in R&D recently.

Now tell me Brexit isn’t responsible for our children’s and grandchildren’s future lives.

She didn’t vote for this but because of those that did has lost her job.

Momof3 Tue 30-Jul-19 17:17:06

@Minniemoo

No we won’t have any money left we’ll have to bail out the farmers and fishermen who will have lost their subsidies. Also the companies who will have increased export and import costs who is going to pay for those.

Also our infrastructure is creaking many places still don’t have fibre broadband.

varian Tue 30-Jul-19 17:55:44

I am really sorry to hear that your daughter has lost her job Whitewavemark2.

One of my daughters is so distraught at the prospect of losing her EU citizenship that she is proposing to emmigrate to an EU member country - not work abroad for a year or two, which they have done previously, then returned home (before 2016), but permanently emigrate.

She and her partner are both very well qualified and experienced and have transferable skills. They have already received job offers from Sweden and Germany, but are now thinking of moving to Austria, along with their children.

It is hard not to blame leave voters for this fiasco, but I think so many of them believed lies. They were fooled by the Leave campaign liars who are the ones who should be exposed for the charlatans they are.

Day6 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:02:05

day6 you haven’t a clue have you? You are simply winging it

Blimey, are you in teacher mode Whitewave or have you become a judge? grin

Like others, I am expressing my opinion, and last time I looked, that wasn't outlawed on Gransnet, nor did it have to meet with YOUR Remainer approval.

Moving on...

Lessismore Tue 30-Jul-19 18:07:00

thanks Grandad for your explanation.

The whole thing is desperately sad. I think the playing fields of Eton have a lot to answer for.

MaizieD Tue 30-Jul-19 18:07:57

£350 million a week more will be in UK coffers. Billions and billions of pounds every year will stay in the UK.

But that's not an opinion, Day6. It's a lie.

2018 the UK paid £13 million to EU
2018 the EU returned £4billion to UK

GillT57 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:19:39

Heavens above. Three years in, much learned about the implications of the no deal that nobody voted for because it was not on the ballot paper and still we have someone claiming that we send the EU £350m per week. Give me strength. Sorry about your DD's job WWMk2. Maybe Day6 could explain why this is a good thing and will be worth it in the end?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:23:14

WWM2 I am truly sorry about your Daughters job moving to Europe.

Glammy57 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:23:56

Momof3. Thank for your reply to UG. I totally agree - the “Me Generation” seems to be those over the age of seventy!

Day6 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:24:05

it is better to be part of an imperfect EU, with the power to make changes

And the above is exactly why many of us (millions) voted to leave the EU.

Cameron's experience in Brussels when doors were slammed in his face and his pleas for small changes were not accepted or heard rang very loud warning bells.

It was interesting that Chukka Ummana (Labour MP) urged us all to stay in the EU and make changes from within.

This is the man who not long ago upped and defected from the Labour Party because he found it intransigent and he had no voice! grin

Our concern should be that the EU is unyielding and will not accommodate UK requests. The lack of democracy displayed within its structures just recently should also worry us.

I cannot think of any person who would keep propping up such a 'foe' to the tune of billions unless it had a huge share in the decision-making processes. The UK does not have much, if any influence in Brussels.

Given we give billions of taxpayers money to Brussels every year, (for a fraction of it back and earmarked for schemes of Brussels choosing) it seems like a lousy deal to me and millions of others. Tony Benn (socialist) warned that we should be able to remove those who govern us, and if we cannot then we should be very afraid.

I give you the EU..

We are not heard, we have no guarantees that moves will be made in the interests of the UK when the likes of non-contributing member states can vote on issues, and yet along with France and Germany we are providing the largest sums for the EU budget.

Those billions (£250,000,000 per week) ) will remain in the UK to boost our economy, to give us a safety net immediately after our exit and then to fund projects of OUR choosing.

October 31st can not come soon enough.

(Our French friends envy us and feel the EU will implode before long. The French and Germans are certainly already very worried by the huge shortfall which Brexit will bring to the EU budget. They will have to pay in yet more to keep it afloat.)

Barmeyoldbat Tue 30-Jul-19 18:26:31

Whitewave and Varian, it is so sad that your daughters have to go abroad to work and live. I fear that we are going to lose so any of our young people and just be left with what? Maybe we should start a Big Trek, load up our carts, form a convoy and head out to pastures new. I would like to settle in Sth Germany.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:29:53

Thank you gg13

dragonfly46 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:36:29

day6 how do you know the French envy us? The Dutch certainly don’t.

You obviously have not read the article I posted as a lot of the money we pay into Europe is offset by our trade deals with them.

I am assuming you do not have children whose jobs are reliant on Europe nor work in businesses which deal with Europe. Your attitude is incredibly insular and based on false information. I see no proof of your claims.

I am so sorry WWM2 that your daughter has become a victim of this debacle and I very much fear there will be more to come.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:41:55

Our family business imports from inside and outside EU.

We also export within the EU.

Our staff have prepared as much as possible. Our suppliers have given us assurances that there will be little or no disruption to supply chain (these are extremely big multi nationals)

We shall have to wait and see, we do have a plan B and C.

Day6 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:47:15

£350 million is roughly what we would pay to the EU budget without the rebate. The UK actually paid closer to £250 million a week

We can be pretty sure about how much cash we put in, but it’s far harder to be sure about how much, if anything, comes back in economic benefits

£350 million a week doesn’t include the rebate

It’s been claimed that we send £350 million a week to the EU. That misses out the rebate, and it doesn’t represent the total economic costs and benefits of EU membership to the UK.

£350 million is what we would pay to the EU budget without the rebate

The UK actually paid closer to £250 million a week if the rebate is included.

Again, from FULL FACT GillT57

fullfact.org/europe/our-eu-membership-fee-55-million/

This is available on the internet, but give me strength GillT57 hmm some Remainers like you are still doing their utmost to deny it and make others look stupid.

Tut, tut. hmm

As I said, we will have £350 million a week more in the UK when we no longer contribute to the EU budget.

jura2 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:50:14

WW2- would your daughter not consider following the job?

The French don't envy us- even those in rural areas. They shake their heads and say ' what on earth do they think they are doing? and choice words I could not possibly repeat here. Yes, a section of the population under Marine LePen want out- but they are really isolated.

Day6 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:52:20

I am assuming you do not have children whose jobs are reliant on Europe nor work in businesses which deal with Europe

You assume wrongly dragonfly

My youngest works and trains others in Italy and Austria. Both the projects he supports have opened their own quarters in the UK, using the UK technology and employing local people. This exchange is set to continue after we leave the EU. It benefits all three countries. All concerns have planned for a No Deal Brexit too.

We are not leaving Europe. We are leaving a trading bloc.

WW2 is so right 'They aren’t being blockaded, that is ridiculous, if there is a no deal there is no trade agreement in place on 1 November - simples.'

the other issues re medicines is that they will be hugely expensive to import with the Pound so low. And of course, in case of shortages- the EU and allied countries will prioritise their own- quite naturally.

jura2 Tue 30-Jul-19 18:56:55

We are leaving a lot more than a 'trading block' - we are leaving all the cooperative scientific and medical research, and funding.

Wheniwasyourage Tue 30-Jul-19 19:02:07

Day6, we Remainers, unfortunately, do not have to try to make some of those with opinions similar to yours look stupid. Do you really think that your £350 million would not disappear straight away into the economic black hole which Brexit will cause, and be able to go anywhere near the NHS?

lemongrove Tue 30-Jul-19 19:02:37

Barmyoldbat...... I see it quite another way! hmm
I see that as the prospect of us leaving the EU becomes more real, so the insults fly on forums from those who still cannot accept leaving.
How about staying civil to posters whichever way they voted, whilst putting your point across ( a novel idea it seems.)
