This morning at Gatwick.

The pound is at parity with the dollar. This has NEVER happened in its history.

The pound is worth now about 87p against the euro.

The implication for the economy is dire.

There is good news out there too!

Depends what you want to focus on.
?

Nonnie Thu 01-Aug-19 11:21:46

Urmston I don't understand the relevance of the CIPD info, please explain?

Well done Thomas Cook but we should be looking at the whole country not just one company. It is interesting the the Dow has plummeted after the Fed changed interest rates yesterday. In normal circumstances we would have expected it would have a positive effect on the £ but it hasn't it has dropped again and is now 1.21$ Please give your opinion on this.

‘Harvester’ owner Mitchells & Butlers said third-quarter revenues were boosted by a spike in food sales.

The company, which also owns Miller & Carter, Toby Carvery and All Bar One, said like-for-like sales jumped 2.8pc. Strong food sales, which rose by 5.4pc, offset a 0.3pc decline in drink sales.

Urmstongran Thu 01-Aug-19 11:25:19

I can’t give an opinion Nonnie sorry.

I’m just sharing some good economic news - to give a little balance on this thread as it’s been so depressing to read!

Nonnie Thu 01-Aug-19 11:46:59

Yes, of course there are companies that are doing better but hardly Thomas Cook! Just look at their share price this year! I have only checked them because I knew a little of what had happened but basing 'good news' on such items is far too shallow. The overall economy is doing badly and all the experts expect it to get worse if we leave the EU and disastrous if we leave without a deal.

POGS Thu 01-Aug-19 12:09:34

Nonnie

Genuine question.

Do you believe the Euro Nation countries are doing well?

Do you follow world wide markets such as the ECB or focus only on the UK.?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Aug-19 12:45:51

The Bank of England has cut the growth rate forecast for the next two years down from the original forecast.

That is if there is a deal

Without a deal the growth rate will be a lot less, or even negative.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Aug-19 13:08:05

6.1bn I can’t believe what they are doing

Just heard undemocratic backstop again ???

Is it Cummings idea that one?

The joke if it is that it was May that negotiated it.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Aug-19 13:16:33

Peter Hyman
@PeterHyman21

This is the most disgusting waste of money ever - money that could go on schools or hospitals is being used to prepare for something that would be a disaster, should never happen and even the PM says is a one in a million chance of happening. A total disgrace.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Aug-19 13:18:13

I wonder if the cabinet members gets a bonus every time they say undemocratic backstop

varian Thu 01-Aug-19 13:59:09

or turbocharge?

Urmstongran Thu 01-Aug-19 15:07:27

Carney’s at it again. ‘One in three chance that there will be a recession’ means that it is twice as likely that there won't be one!

More attempts of doom and gloom from Carney.

varian Thu 01-Aug-19 15:12:43

This was on the basis of a deal. He made it clear that things would be much much worse if we left the EU with no deal.

crystaltipps Thu 01-Aug-19 15:53:00

Carney is only the governor of the Bank of England so I expect leavers on here have far more knowledge of the economy. £ will hit an all time low soon,

crystaltipps Thu 01-Aug-19 15:54:41

So some beer and food sales went up - coinciding with lots of sporting and outdoor events when people have bbqs - not a reflecting on how marvellous Brexit is going.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Aug-19 15:56:13

Oh those darned experts!! Life would be so much easier if we didnt have people who know what they are talking about.

Universities wouldn’t exist, schools wouldn’t exist- in fact parliament Would be the only place that would be stuffed with people as none of them seem to know a thing yet put out the propaganda by the day.

The latest nonsense

undemocratic backstop

turbocharged

Just how thick do they think we are??

Day6 Thu 01-Aug-19 16:04:44

No wonder they are up in arms

How strange. The farmers in the county have "Thank you for supporting British Farming" posters pinned to gates and bridges for passing traffic to see - all adorned with the Union Jack flag.

hmm

crystaltipps Thu 01-Aug-19 16:08:07

Who are the farmers thanking? Maybe those who buy their stuff?

GillT57 Thu 01-Aug-19 16:12:41

But Day6 backing British Farmers is not only done by Brexiteers you know. We all, hopefully, try to buy locally or at least British, but there is no getting away from the fact that we are not self sufficient in food in this country.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Aug-19 16:18:22

day6 I simply don’t understand the significance of your post about the farmers posters.

So what?

I have for years bought nothing else but British organic grass feed meat from a farmer.

Nonnie Thu 01-Aug-19 16:51:35

POGS I follow UK markets more than others and US probably next. There is significant variation between different EU members but I don't understand how that is relevant. Surely it is our economy that matters and how it is likely to be damaged?

I know some have said the EU is in a terrible state and will collapse and it is interesting to speculate but makes no difference to the facts. If we stay in and it collapses we will be no worse off than if we leave, we will be better off. Our economy has thrived overall since we joined the EU and it must be clear to every thinking person by now that it will plunge after 31st October.

To suggest that all the experts who predict that we will be worse off are gloom and doom merchants is completely wrong. I think that those who do so do it because they don't have any evidence to the contrary. One simple fact is that in 2016 a £ bought 1.62$, today it buys 1.21$. That means it costs us 25% more to buy from abroad.

growstuff Thu 01-Aug-19 16:56:29

The collapse of the EU sounds like wishful thinking from Project Fear ;-)

Day6 Thu 01-Aug-19 16:56:48

We know British fishermen have grievances with the EU. So do British farmers.

Farmers For Britain - their mission. This is just a small part giving reasons why the EU is creating issues which make life more difficult for them. It's all in the link below.

www.farmersforbritain.co.uk/our-issue-with-the-eu

"1. We want to see an increase in Food Production. The CAP makes this more difficult."

"Fundamental to the survival of the United Kingdom’s rural economy is an increase in food production, and this is hindered by our membership of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)."

"It is, understandably, a difficult enterprise to agree on regulations that apply to 28 member states. As a result of this, UK farmers are often forced to compromise"

The CAP fails to recognise and support the unique needs of UK farmers.

The CAP fails to recognise the differences and unique needs of the agricultural industries in each of its member states. The ‘one-size-fits-all’ policy does not work for the UK’s farmers and is failing certain sectors, particularly the Dairy industry, in a big way. Only outside the EU can the government tailor subsidies to support farmers in a truly efficient and effective way.

George Eustice, Minister of State for Farming (2016) said: ‘I see exceptional talent and technical expertise within DEFRA but it is constrained and hindered by the EU. Rather than being free to construct new ideas and fresh ways of doing things, our policy officials spend their days fretting about whether they are complying with this or that regulation.'

'If we have the courage to take back control, we would be free to think again and could achieve so much more for farmers and our environment.’

Day6 Thu 01-Aug-19 17:06:46

I simply don’t understand the significance of your post about the farmers posters

So what?

So what? How polite. hmm Are you the guardian of the thread or something?

I am answering a previous post. It is allowed.

I did quote an extract of it, in case you failed to notice Whitewave. In fact, I feel sure you failed to notice.

MaizieD Thu 01-Aug-19 17:17:12

I didn't understand the significance of your apparently random post about the farmers' signs, either Day6.

I have no idea which post the bit you quoted came from or what is so special about farmers having 'Thank you for supporting British farming' notices up (not that I've seen any at all around my way). Is there meant to be a Brexit connection in there? We've been exhorted to buy British meat for decades via various campaigns.

Farmers I know were appalled by the referendum result. I understand that, like the rest of the country, they were split pretty well 50/50 on Remaining or Leaving.
