How long will Boris last?

As a bit of amusement I was trying to work ut how long Boris will stick at the job of PM. He's not big on commitment. I think he'll want to go down in history as the man who did Brexit, but I don't think he'll wnt to stick around afterwards. I think he'll be getting himself bounced up to the H of Lords once it's done. Anyone else want to guess at how long he'll last?

Yehbutnobut Thu 26-Dec-19 22:48:48

Opal they may not want to settle but they do need to stop somewhere overnight or for a few nights. There are traveller camps set up outside many towns but not all councils have complied with the law.

trisher Thu 26-Dec-19 23:05:45

Isn't it a contradiction to say they want to take over and live at the end of your street but then say they don't want to settle? Providing proper sites is just as important as housing any other person. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much chance of anyone being proprly housed by this government.

Yehbutnobut: ‘The courts have said that Romany Gypsies and Irish Travellers are protected against race discrimination because they’re ethnic groups under the Equality Act.’
And herein lies the problem. Any attempt to deal with them leads to cries of 'racism!' when their ethnic group is totally irrelevant. It is their behaviour which is the problem. It matters not whether they are Irish tinkers, Romany gypsies or new age travellers, if they cause damage, intimidate people and leave thousands of pounds worth of rubbish behind then they should be dealt with under the law.

Easy to say ‘provide proper sites’, where ? In parks in cities ?

Villages and towns don’t want sites , the mess really is unpleasant, in fields several miles into the countryside ? Sewage etc

Democracy certainly has been under threat since the 2016 referendum...we had a vote to remain or leave the EU . Leave voters were the majority and the courts and parliament went against the majority in every way they could to try and block BREXIT..Boris Johnson had a landslide victory in the election and has already got the withdrawal agreement passed and made steps to ensure we leave the EU by Dec 2020.... Corbyn was a fence sitter but leaning towards remain....Swinson was happy to ignore completely the referendum result ....all Corbyn and his lot were hell bent on making us into a Marxist country. My husband was in the military and there is no way I would vote for him with his anti forces stance...I agree with Urmstongran.i do respect others have different views though

JenniferEccles Fri 27-Dec-19 16:24:22

Exactly Chestnut but as we are only too aware, the ‘racist’ card trumps all other considerations these days.

Unfortunately this means that the police have to tread very carefully in their dealings with the gypsies.

trisher Fri 27-Dec-19 16:39:55

I wonder if the people posting about the Romany culture realise they have much the same views as the Nazis? I recommend reading Fires in the Dark by Louise Doughty, a moving account of the life of a gypsy in the 1930s. Racism begins by thinking one set of people are not worth treating as equals and have the wrong sort of beliefs. It never stops there.

JenniferEccles Fri 27-Dec-19 16:59:41

I suspect most people would treat them as equals if they followed the same rules and regulations that the rest of us have to.

But they don’t do they?

The sooner the law is changed, the better.

Davidhs Fri 27-Dec-19 17:58:35

Trisher, if you had them living next to you your liberal attitude would change very quickly, the only reason they don’t want to settle is because it keeps them one step ahead of the law.
They regard themselves as lawless, on the occasions that police do follow a stolen vehicle back to a traveler site nobody knows any thing or has seen anything. All the police can do is recover all the stolen property, they can find, it’s rare to prosecute them. If they get caught in a stolen vehicle they have “bought it off a man in a pub”, no chance of a prosecution.

These closed camps must be broken up, they are not a persecuted ethnic group they are criminals. The law is an ass, they are only encouraging more to become travelers to avoid justice.

GagaJo Fri 27-Dec-19 18:10:32

The way some of you on here refer to gypsies is very hypocritical. Some of you doing it were yelling 'antisemitism' at labour supporters for a LOT less only a couple of weeks ago.

Check yourselves.

Chestnut Fri 27-Dec-19 19:09:12

I can only repeat that anyone who breaks the law needs to be caught and dealt with, it has nothing to do with their ethnic group. Some here don't seem to get that.
Persecuting innocent people i.e. Jews by the Nazis is something completely different and there is no connection!

trisher Fri 27-Dec-19 19:25:16

There is certainly a connection Chestnut and the perception of many on this thread about Gypsies entirely matches the ideas of the Nazis. It is even more shocking that the Roma people received no sort of compensation, reparation or recognition of the treatment they suffered during WW2 until 1979 because until then they were not regarded as an ethnic group. Some people sadly are still stuck in that time. encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/genocide-of-european-roma-gypsies-1939-1945

Davidhs Fri 27-Dec-19 20:10:22

Why get hung up on Romany’s, maybe you are Romany descent, there used to be a lot of them traveling I well remember them fruit and veg picking and doing all sorts of casual work. Most seem to be settled now there is a group on the council site nearby, they don’t seem to cause any problem.

We also have 2 sites that are not Romany (they don’t mix) and they are a big problem

trisher Fri 27-Dec-19 20:56:11

Because the government proposes to bring in legislation which will make life more difficult for them. I am not of Romany decent but why should I need to be to recognise racism.

Davidhs Fri 27-Dec-19 22:05:32

Trisher what it would mean is that they can live in properly regulated sites and obey the laws we all have to, as I said it is not Romany’s that are the problem

lemongrove Fri 27-Dec-19 22:57:11

I agree Davidhs I wonder how many realise the true extent of their criminal activities.

Chestnut Fri 27-Dec-19 23:03:26

trisher: the perception of many on this thread about Gypsies entirely matches the ideas of the Nazis.
You think 'many on this thread' want to exterminate gypsies? That is a ridiculous notion. You seem to be suffering from some sort of delusion. They just need to abide by the law of the land like anyone else.

Davidhs Sat 28-Dec-19 08:31:21

It is no exaggeration to say that those in rural areas fear a nightime visit by travelers theiving, the police don’t have the resources to react, and when they do the criminals have long gone.
These are not the warm fuzzy people you see on Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

MaizieD Sat 28-Dec-19 09:55:57

Why are you assuming that all night time thieving is done by 'travellers', David?

Flowerette Sat 28-Dec-19 10:51:44

I don’t care
I’m just relieved Corbyn didn’t get in ?

Chestnut Sat 28-Dec-19 10:55:26

I don't think David is implying ALL night time thieving is done by travellers, but only when they in the area. It must be very frightening knowing the Police cannot respond quickly in rural areas. Some isolated properties are very vulnerable.

Yehbutnobut Sat 28-Dec-19 11:12:53

Chestnut I was merely correcting lemon’s misinformation not commenting on behaviour. I think that when someone posts a clearly inaccurate ‘fact’ on social media it is best to point out such errors.

trisher Sat 28-Dec-19 11:15:35

I believe organised crime found that burgling rural properties was in many ways more lucrative than town robberies, but hey blame the travellers it's so much easier and it fits so much better with your prejudices.

trisher Sat 28-Dec-19 11:17:36

Chestnut I don't suppose the Nazis started off wanting to exterminate people simply to treat them differently because they were different which is what many on this thread want.

lemongrove Sat 28-Dec-19 11:21:25

‘Lemons misinformation’ ??
Exactly what misinformation are you talking about Yeahbut......what fact?
