As a bit of amusement I was trying to work ut how long Boris will stick at the job of PM. He's not big on commitment. I think he'll want to go down in history as the man who did Brexit, but I don't think he'll wnt to stick around afterwards. I think he'll be getting himself bounced up to the H of Lords once it's done. Anyone else want to guess at how long he'll last?

Remind me, are Gipsies living in UK not British and have been for many many generations???

trisher Sun 22-Dec-19 21:03:02

Of course they are. Chestnut imaginning that bad parenting only exists amongst the travellers is truly racist. There are such people in every city and every community.

Early Britons have been proven to look very dark with Gipsy traits.

Yehbutnobut Sun 22-Dec-19 22:36:34

We have gypsies often around here. The worst are the tinker-types. Break into land eg school playing fields, leave rubbish and excrement behind and steal from garages.

Then there are the Romanies with their beautiful horse-drawn caravans. They leave nothing behind.

Then there are the Fairground Travellers who get permission to stay on certain car parks and leave their rubbish neatly bagged at the gate when they leave.

Not all the same.

trisher - you are making things up in your head.
Chestnut imaginning that bad parenting only exists amongst the travellers is truly racist. There are such people in every city and every community.
Did I say bad parenting only exists among the travellers? No I didn't. You are the one imagining things and making ridiculous accusations of racism which are getting increasingly offensive.

jura, there are a significant proportion of Irish in the traveller community. They may in fact be the majority. Most of the problems with unauthorised traveller communities are with the irish contingent. Quite a number of whom have homes in Ireland but travel to earn a living.

Before anyone accuses me of racism, I am Irish and hope soon to be the proud possessor of an Irish passport.

It seems to have turned into a another post. I hope Boris stays long enough to sort out a good team to give us a fair and workable Brexit deal.

Sparkling Mon 23-Dec-19 06:36:23

Monica, I do hope you get your Irish passport, will you be moving to Ireland or staying here?

Oldwoman70 Mon 23-Dec-19 09:04:21

As I understand it the actions being taken by the government is not aimed at all travellers, just those who break the law.

Many travellers manage to continue their lifestyle without breaking the law, I have no problem with them.

Is anyone else suspicious about the fact that Johnson is now considered allowing another Scottish referendum. Removing the SNP from parliament would mean even less dissenting voices. And, if he changes the boundaries probably less Labour and LibDems to deal with. Then make the government above the law and, lo and behold, he truly will have 'taken [back] control'. Scary or what?

Oldwoman70 Mon 23-Dec-19 17:55:39

I understand Nicola Sturgeon has asked for another referendum but the last I heard Johnson had ruled that out - has that changed?

Labaik Mon 23-Dec-19 18:53:07

I saw a headline yesterday that said he would give it serious consideration. I'll see if I can find it.

I like Boris...I think he’s doing an excellent job and will be good for the country ...fgs let’s give him a chance ....democracy will be restored in this country ....a Corbyn govt would be a disaster ...I realise we all have our own opinion of course ...but this is mine

trisher Thu 26-Dec-19 17:18:46

Would you like to post any of the excellent things Boris has done nannypinkl ? Or are they just figments of your imagination?

MaizieD Thu 26-Dec-19 17:23:50

democracy will be restored in this country

I don't recall democracy ever being lost in this country; though I think it's tottering now...

Urmstongran Thu 26-Dec-19 17:24:03

I think Boris cheers up many in the country! He is patriotic and enthusiastic. He’s got a majority and he will get things done.

GagaJo Thu 26-Dec-19 17:27:25

I think Boris is just in it for the power. As those that know him have said. Fair enough. Gove was too. He wrecked the education of generations of UK kids just to make a name for himself. I don't think Boris is alone in wanting the top spot for his ego.

ONE of the reasons I liked Corbyn is because I don't think he was power hungry. I'd like another Labour leader who wants it for the RIGHT reasons. I'm not sure a couple of those vying for it are any different to Boris.

43,6% of the vote is not a majority. Most voters rejected this Charlton.

Travellers/Gypsies are not an ethnic group, many are as British as anyone else, so it can hardly be racist to say that many are also a nuisance and that some regularly indulge in criminal activities, not all but many.
The police where I live could tell you a thing or two.

Urmstongran Thu 26-Dec-19 21:47:40

I don't recall democracy ever being lost in this country - well Jo Swinson tried it. Glad she got short shrift.
?

Yehbutnobut Thu 26-Dec-19 22:03:41

You are wrong Lemon

‘The courts have said that Romany Gypsies and Irish Travellers are protected against race discrimination because they’re ethnic groups under the Equality Act.’

From Government Website.

If the North is still 'poor and deprived' after the UK has been in the EU/EEC since 1973, then clearly the EU has not been a good thing for that area.

Also, can I remind you that the EU does not have any money of its own to fund whatever or wherever, it only has money from membership states' contributions ( minus the expenses of the EU commission). The Big 5, including the UK, fund everyone else. So every new bridge in Greece and every new road in Spain has been paid for with your pot hole repair money.

GagaJo Thu 26-Dec-19 22:42:30

I think you'll remember, quizqueen, that the north is mostly poor due to the closure of the mines and the decimation of industry under Margaret Thatcher.

Opal Thu 26-Dec-19 22:42:31

That doesn't change the fact that some travellers are bloody nuisances, when they set up camp on public ground and parks next to homes, threaten home owners, cause criminal damage, and leave the area in a complete mess when they go. We've all seen it. And to suggest that councils should find places for them to settle is laughable. First, where do you suggest? Would you like them to be placed at the end of your road? No, thought not. And secondly, they don't want to settle - that's why they're travellers, it's their lifestyle choice.
