What a truth! Racist remarks are racist what ever your colour!

Callistemon Wed 22-Jan-20 17:52:28

She involved herself.

Chewbacca Wed 22-Jan-20 18:08:49

I don't think LF's career will survive this, actually.

Don't be ridiculous jura.

MawB Wed 22-Jan-20 19:33:50

I don’t imagine LF (or his agent) are shaking in their shoes one little bit either.

Doodle Wed 22-Jan-20 21:07:27

Of course his career will survive. I watched QT and feel that was said by both parties was not repeated in proper context. I do not believe the whole reason for Megan leaving the country was racism. It may be a part of the reason but certainly not the whole reason.

Laurence Fox spoke about a lone Sikh soldier spoiling his enjoyment of 1917.
One of six soldiers in WW1, were from the sub continent
In the chaos that surely reigned, why would it be implausible that a Sikh would be in the company of other soldiers?
You know, soldiers who ALL fought for Britain...
I feel so sad that his opinions, can be defended, there is absolutely no defence for bigotry

Joelsnan Wed 22-Jan-20 22:42:06

Dollymac
I think what he was saying was that he did not enjoy the ‘tokenism’ of including one single Sikh soldier in a film when it is known that there were brigades of soldiers from the Indian and other commonwealth countries fighting in the First World War. Either acknowledge them properly or don’t include just one.

Dollymac Wed 22-Jan-20 23:02:45

No, I don't agree that is what he meant Joelsnan. I don't think that is what he meant at all
I think that I 'get' LF; he is a privileged, privately educated, white male, whose opinions belong in the 1950s
He refuses to date women under the age of thirty five, as they are too 'woke'
Maybe they are too 'smart' to entertain a tosser like this

Chestnut Wed 22-Jan-20 23:52:33

I watched him on GMB and as 3nanny6 said Piers Morgan did not agree with his comment about the Sikh soldier for all the reasons mentioned. However, some of the following points LF made were perfectly valid, that we should all be entitled to express an opinion without being threatened or torn to shreds. And that is absolutely true, I am with him on that. I do not defend what he said but I defend his right to say it.
I do not think he was looking for the 'sympathy card' when he mentioned that he has a son and had death threats. He was simply pointing out the unwelcome consequences of giving an opinion.

Have been away for a while and have made a point of not watching much tv or accessing the internet but, having just read some of this thread the first thing that crossed my mind was that several Sikhs have been killed over the past few days. Is this just a coincidence or is it something to do with what has been said by Lawrence Fox?

growstuff Thu 23-Jan-20 01:26:15

Joelsnan That is really not what he said in the original interview. He's rationalising and making excuses after the event.

tickingbird Thu 23-Jan-20 07:22:48

Labaik The Sikhs were killed by other Sikhs, apparently in a drunken argument over money. Nothing whatsoever to do with LF! For the record he said nothing defamatory anout Sikhs.

Iam64 Thu 23-Jan-20 08:00:51

There's another piece in the DM on line this morning. Mr Fox now says he didn't know that Sikh's fought in WW1 because "I'm not a historian".

The DM piece includes a number of photographs showing Sikh's, Indians, Black soldiers from African colonies. Some of the photographs show them in their own regiments, others show them standing with white soldiers. The Manchester regiment, amongst others, included Sikh soldiers rather than them be put into a different Regiment.

Mr F is out of his depth as a social or historical commentator. As an aside, am I alone in thinking he's looking rough. I wondered on QT whether he needed a tonic

tickingbird Thu 23-Jan-20 08:12:18

I think he’s shot himself in the foot with the Sikh comments.

tickingbird Thu 23-Jan-20 08:15:21

Although I agree with joelsnan regarding what he said. He did say why place one Sikh soldier in a film as it’s tokenism. However, I think he should have kept quiet on that one,

merlotgran Thu 23-Jan-20 09:49:21

grin

Too many pre show gins in the green room maybe?

lemongrove Thu 23-Jan-20 10:34:09

As a rule, actors’ careers survive anything.?
Remember Hugh Grant?

Callistemon Thu 23-Jan-20 10:36:42

Persona non grata now National Treasure?
Taken over the role from Stephen Fry.

Iam64 Fri 24-Jan-20 08:40:43

He gets worse by the day. Today he's continuing to justify his nonsensical comments about WW1 and insisting he's the one being subjected to racism.
He's also looking worse by the day. I still think he needs a tonic - it may do him good to book himself into one of those lovely alternative therapy places, no substances, alcohol etc, lots of healthy organic vegetables and enforced relaxation. Fabulous. May be just a tad to woke for him though.

Galaxy Fri 24-Jan-20 10:20:37

This is the problem, he has nothing of substance to say. Many people are interesting around this subject but he is not one of them.

Chestnut Fri 24-Jan-20 10:42:34

Iam64 Today he's continuing to justify his nonsensical comments about WW1
Don't know where you heard that. I've just read that he has apologised on social media for the WW1 remarks.

He said: 'Fellow humans who are #Sikhs. I am as moved by the sacrifices your relatives made as I am by the loss of all those who die in war, whatever creed or colour. Please accept my apology for being clumsy in the way I have expressed myself over this matter in recent days.'

I am not defending him because as I said earlier I think he comes across as arrogant and entitled, but I think sometimes we all make throw-away remarks we regret and it shouldn't justify being abusive towards him. He made a mistake as we all do.

trisher Fri 24-Jan-20 16:26:58

So LF knows as much about racism as he does about WW1! There is a saying "Empty vessels make the most sound" LF personified!

jura2 Sat 25-Jan-20 10:37:30

Oh my- irrelevant to his racism, perceived or otherwise, but ...

youtu.be/BLkvtHwSyM4

how awful sad

trisher Sat 25-Jan-20 11:12:55

It is dreadful jura2 but reading the comments under it is hilarious. I advise anyone to turn the volume down and just read. It's a great laugh.

In a small village in Normandy - S. Riquier- there is aWW1 graveyard, with row upon row of young men killed in a nearby battle. They are from a regiment known as Skinner’s Horse. The headstones have symbols for Sikh, Muslim and Hindu soldiers. I felt very sad, as I imagine few of their relatives were ever able to visit their final resting places.
