INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Hurrah! We're getting OUT at last!

But it seems strange to me that there is so little talk/news on the media about this. Before the General Election everything was about Brexit. To the point that even I got sick to death of it! But it's all gone quiet since then. Are there to be no celebrations from all those who voted to leave? (Sad that Big Ben won't even mark this historic event.)

(I was talking to a young woman the other day, and she didn't even know that we were leaving the EU on Friday!)

I can't really celebate in style, as most of my family wanted to remain -otherwise I would have had a party! So it will be a bit of a damp squib for me!

I shall still open a bottle of champers and toast this great country of ours - our democracy, our integrity - and now, at last, our freedom from a corrupt and self-serving feudalistic state.

Such fuss and bother. What are you achieving by being so argumentative? All that’s happening is that you’re winding yourself up as the opinion of the person on the other end matters nothing to you in reality. Yes, reality, the one thing these fora don’t represent.

lemongrove Sat 01-Feb-20 17:54:38

I think we will have a little truthfulness on here about posts GGM3 as you appear to have a very selective memory.
You brought up the subject of ‘previous incarnations’ for no reason at all in your post 16:41:06

Further to that, I really do feel sorry for posters who feel there is nothing to look forward to......all because we have left the EU.

lemongrove Sat 01-Feb-20 18:01:01

Yes, you are right about fora not representing reality Experience ?Which is why some posters were astounded that the LP did so terribly at the GE, when most of what they read on social media assured them Corbyn would win easily....it’s a bubble.

Barmeyoldbat Sat 01-Feb-20 18:14:39

For goodness sake, why don't some of the leavers give it a rest. We don't want your sympathy because as you say we lost. We just want some understanding from you that we view leaving completely different to you. Time will tell who was right and who was wrong and we will continue to do and enjoy what we did before.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 01-Feb-20 18:18:47

So I did. However, it was only to make the point that I have been reading your posts for what seems like a very long time. It seems I unintentionally touched on a sore point of yours.

Are you now going to admit I was never called your dreamed up names? I won't wait.

Who said there is nothing to look forward too? I do not believe there will be the new age of global conquest that makes the Brexiteers shout tally-ho and leap on their horses (or flash cars) for, and morality will not revert to 1950 levels as some would like so they no longer have to think and reflect about how rude they think they can be to others just because they are English. After all, this was a very English Brixit.

I also don't believe we will be so afraid of the crisis we are moving towards we will rejoin the EU. I imagine while the third-world countries, with their young population many of whom have the core characteristics of successful immigrants, will overtake us as we go into a slow decline. I take great heart that this will annoy the racists among the brexiteers and that I will not be here to see the decline and that my family have the skills to move to where they can have a good life - as two-thirds of them have already done.

But I do worry about some of you.

lemongrove Sat 01-Feb-20 18:29:50

? Hilarious!

Totally agree Barmeyoldbat.

I think this thread was just a ‘virtual’ party no harm intended. A chance for us Leavers to celebrate and mark the occasion. Which is of course momentous.

Obviously as has been pointed out, joyous threads can’t be proscribed only for those of the same political viewpoint but if nothing else, those who are not wanting to join in could - dare I say it - swerve the thread instead of jumping in!

GracesGranMK3 Sat 01-Feb-20 18:50:56

Why on earth should we Urmstongran? If it felt to you that we were celebrating bringing our country down wouldn't you say something?

It seems that even the OP found her celebrations limited by the feeling others might find them offensive and chose not to rub their noses in it but it didn't stop certain people did it?

GracesGranMK3 Sat 01-Feb-20 18:53:11

I knew there was no point in waiting for a little truthfulness from you Lemongrove. Whatever the name, you don't change.

Urmstongran Sat 01-Feb-20 19:06:37

Reading back over this thread (I’ve been at a children’s party all afternoon - lovely!) in reply to you Jura

^ I have not yet heard a single Leaver who has given any factual argument, backed by clear information- as to how Brexit will make our country and our lives better. No, no- not soundbites, not clichés- FACTS^

Have you heard post Brexit about ‘Freeports’? Amazing! Can’t wait. Read up on them and the reason why Boris plans to introduce them. Boy that’s gonna shake things up!

And as regards Boris not joining in the celebrations last night, I honestly think he did the balanced and right thing to stay away. He wants to heal divisions and his presence most probably would have alienated those who didn’t vote for Brexit. As for those who did, they got over it and enjoyed their party. The main thing is that we ARE leaving. Joyful celebrations did not need Boris as such.

And I have heard that Remainers are now calling themselves Rejoiners. Good luck with that but I believe you’ll have to wait 10y as I think Boris will do well in 5y ‘levelling up’ and get a second term. Labour will be in the wilderness for some time, in my humble!

Urmstongran Sat 01-Feb-20 19:09:23

Perhaps I might well GGMk3.

Just not on THIS thread‼️

Why be mean and want to burst the party balloon? You could have started another thread for a good old moan!

Urmstongran Do you know what "levelling up" involves and what is already happening?

Chestnut Sat 01-Feb-20 19:30:02

GracesGranMK3: Just as I am often shocked by your posts Chestnut.
It's unlikely you can quote an example where I have made a personal attack on another poster like you do.
You have called leavers crass, clueless, rude, nasty, arrogant, lacking in common sense, no manners, childish. You said to one poster 'unless you are a child and it's your mother helping you to understand how things are done.'
You also called leavers who were posting on here last night sad people because they didn't have anyone to celebrate with!
These comments are just awful, and I will leave it to other posters to decide who is the one being 'rude and nasty'.
If my comments shock you then it's because they have clearly hit the spot but they are certainly not personal insults as many of yours are.

Urmstongran Sat 01-Feb-20 19:36:20

I’ve not told you what to do GGMk3 it was just a suggestion for a way not to spoil this one.

Cocaine filled balloons? Hehe! Nah. Don’t need a chemical buzz for this happy thread! It’s just so lovely to have a space to say ‘we did it - against all the odds’.

growstuff I think levelling up will be Boris’ way of acknowledging to the Red Wall who have loaned him their votes that he won’t let them down. Dominic Cummings is savvy. He will want Boris to retain those votes. It will happen I’m convinced. Give it time ... it’s Day 1.
?

Urmstongran Sat 01-Feb-20 19:39:43

I think that comment was aimed at me Chestnut.

I ignored it even though it was a tad sharp.

Best way.

''Have you heard post Brexit about ‘Freeports’? Amazing! Can’t wait. Read up on them and the reason why Boris plans to introduce them. Boy that’s gonna shake things up!''

I am afraid the FT strongly disagrees with you.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 01-Feb-20 19:40:37

I don't think Free Ports are likely to 'level up', do you Growstuff. All that ever needed was the same sort investment in parts of the country that up 'till now have not voted Conservative as those who have been overindulged in this way.

General reaction from the industries involved is that we could achieve the same through existing processes without the race to the bottom Free Ports encourage.

As we appear to be carrying on with austerity I will wait and see if any of these little miracles actually happen.

I don't think I am likely to call myself a rejoiner. I am still pro-European and I still like the idea that this island, with the sometimes over-inflated idea of its own importance, can work cooperatively with other nations. Rather like the idea of LG admitting to an error, I won't hold my breath.

Greymar Sat 01-Feb-20 19:44:05

Why is the average " woman in the street" so damned excited about all this? I really don't understand it at all.

Urmstongran Sat 01-Feb-20 19:44:21

I read a brilliant article on Freeports last year Jura written by someone in the business. It was so encouraging about what we would be able to do!

Ah, it was just an illustration really though as to the possibilities we now have as an independent nation.

Upwards & onwards!

Smileless2012 Sat 01-Feb-20 19:49:35

I agree Urmstongran that Boris did the right thing last night by not joining in any public celebrations. Doing so would have emphasised the divisions that he rightly wants to heal,

Urmstongran Sat 01-Feb-20 19:49:57

Why is the average " woman in the street" so damned excited about all this? I really don't understand it at all.

I don’t like the soaps, ‘Strictly’, knitting or gardening Greymar but I do like politics and current affairs! Always have.

Each to their own I suppose.

MerylStreep Sat 01-Feb-20 19:50:21

Cocaine filled balloons. I'd like to see that delivery ???

Greymar Sat 01-Feb-20 19:51:15

Mmmm, I like knitting and reading but not at the same time.
