How will we measure the success of Brexit?

Well we won’t know the terms of Brexit for another year, but I’m wondering how the marvellous benefits will be measured, and if they don’t happen will people ever accept that it wasn’t a good idea? Based on the promises that were made I can offer the following we should look for as a measure of success:
1. No border in the Irish Sea and no breaking of the GFA
2. £350 m a week for the NHS and the 40 new hospitals, thousands of new nurses
3. We should have parity in the number or quality of trade deals we manage to negotiate plus they should not be fewer or worse than the ones we have already with the EU.
If the above do not happen will anyone admit we have been lied to? Or will they just say it takes time - if so, how long do we have to wait for any benefits?

So if the measure of success is halting immigration from anywhere, not just Eastern Europe, and we find that doesn’t happen - Poles replaced by Filipinos, say, will Brexit supporters feel betrayed?

ladymuck The rest of the world is not likely to treat the UK (probably soon to be just England) with any more respect now. Why on earth should it?

Nezumi65 Sat 01-Feb-20 09:08:18

This is how I’m judging success

Meat production is sustainable, but not industrialised meat prduction that feeds cattle almost exclusively on soya and maize www.pastureforlife.org/. We will eat less meat and better quality.

lemongrove Sat 01-Feb-20 16:08:18

Nope, it will be the UK, not ‘just England’.

Well said Kandinsky ??

MaizieD Sat 01-Feb-20 16:25:44

I must confess to not knowing much about UK meat production, MOnica, but aren't most of our beef cattle pasture reared?

MaizieD Sat 01-Feb-20 16:27:37

Oooh, hold that, MOnica. I should have googled first blush

No, they aren't. Not industrialised breeding like the US, but not pasture only. Follow the link I gave to find out more.

I voted remain and think Brexit will be a disaster. However for all our sakes I hope to be proven completely wrong and I will hold my hand up and admit it. There is no £350m for the NHS, no extra doctors or nurses, no social care program, no 40 hospitals, no one queueing up to sign great trade deals. Both the EU and the USA will take us to the cleaners. But we already know all this.

I have no idea what success looks like but my feeling is that most people will see it as a success if we are no worse off. That is probably the best we can hope for. However the xenophobia and racism displayed by many leavers suggests the UK will be a nastier place to live .

Forty Seven years in the EU and I never saw any remainer offer any criteria for success yet two days out and already trying to find something to fail Brexit on?

I just love remainers.

The goals of the EU were (amongst others) to promote peace, provide justice, remove internal borders, respect culture & diversity, remove discrimination - etc - can’t remember more without looking them up.

I think it’s done a pretty good job of meeting those goals. It didn’t remove all discrimination but given the rise in hate incidents since the Brexit vote it seemed to do a better job than we can manage alone.

I think the EU has caused all this with it's short-term thinking.

and let's not forget the EU army Nick Clegg said on Nat TV it was not ever happening - 3 YEARS LATER...

EU army well underway, and unelected heads of Brussels looking to send our brave lads into their orchestrated "troubles".

growstuff Sun 02-Feb-20 16:16:31

What a load of cobblers!

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 16:30:59

Stop reading the Express anaimous.

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 16:34:52

And anyway even if does create an army had we stayed in we wouldn’t have been forced to join it fullfact.org/online/EU-army-conscription-September-2019/

Out of interest do you object to NATO & if not why not?

growstuff Sun 02-Feb-20 16:35:15

She possibly writes for it. hmm

aprilrose Sun 02-Feb-20 17:38:20

Peace has been kept by NATO, what peace there has been.

Justice? Whose justice exactly? That which offers access to courts on the basis of innocent until proven guilty or the one that has put itself above any UK laws and assumes guilt with the accused having to prove their innocence ( the European way).

As for prosperity - tell that to the Greeks, the Spanish, the Portugese, the Italians or anywhere else with youth unemployment in EU countries running at around 49% and of course many with collapsed economies. Even Germany is in recession. The banks are broken. The EU ha no accounts for 15+ years. No accountability

A really good job done there.

All over Europe and especially in EU countries there is unrest - France with its Yellow Coats, Spain and the Catalans, The rise of Antifa which is stronget in continental EU than here.

No internal borders - has that promoted prosperity and good for us? Diversity? Respect for other cultures - ask the Swedish about that one or even the Germans, whose culture is being respected in a state where there is no cultural identity for its member peoples?

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 18:25:30

You should read the link I gave earlier to a FT article about the rise of the far right across Europe. You may find it interesting.

I’d rather put my lot in with the EU than Johnson and Trump. Johnson is already talking about reducing employment rights, food hygiene rules and environmental standards. Is that really what you wanted post Brexit?

Nezumi65 Sun 02-Feb-20 18:27:14

And yes I would say freedom of movement and diversity was good for us. I certainly miss my friends who have left, & will miss the ones who follow them.

growstuff Sun 02-Feb-20 18:28:18

What a total load of absolute rot aprilrose. I can't even be bothered to discuss with you.

aprilrose Sun 02-Feb-20 18:29:38

Then we will have to differ.

growstuff Sun 02-Feb-20 18:30:10

I'm struggling to believe that you're not some kind of badly programmed computer. Or maybe fake news really is the new norm.

aprilrose Sun 02-Feb-20 18:30:43

Thats OK growstuff. You are entitled as any of us to an opinion, but thats all it is.

growstuff Sun 02-Feb-20 18:31:12

Thank goodness we have to differ. I couldn't be like you for anything in the world. I believe in facts!

growstuff Sun 02-Feb-20 18:31:38

Fact-based opinions - there's a difference!
