Well this is an odd one.

Trevor Phillips who formerly chaired the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), has been suspended from the Labour Party pending an investigation and could be expelled as a Labour Member as the Labour Party accuses him of Islamophobia.

If ever there was a sane voice and principled advocate for Equality and Human Rights I find hard to find if not Trevor Phillips.

I suppose there will be agreement and disagreement but I do not find any racist or Islamophobic in what he has said.

maddyone I haven't read everything Trevor Phillips has ever uttered. However, I think you've hit the nail on the head. It really is only some (a small minority) Muslims who are terrorists or engage in activities which aren't compatible with the British way of life.

The way Trevor Phillips has framed what he said, it sounds as though he is condemning all Muslims. It's well-known that he doesn't agree with multi-culturalism ie letting different groups maintain their own culture and traditions, but living with respect for each other. He thinks that different groups should integrate totally, which is unrealistic over a short time scale.

The problem is that people like Tommy Robinson and other racists have pounced on what he has said as justification for their views.

Joelsnan I'm not denying it. Jews have done the same in parts of North London and some other areas throughout the country. Other immigrants have done the same throughout history. For example, I know one area of a Hertfordshire town which is almost predominantly Southern Italian. London has always been a city of many distinct communities. There used to be areas of Liverpool which were Catholic etc etc.

I think the reasons they do it are fairly obvious. How would you suggest people are encouraged to move out of their comfort zones?

The same way other cultures and religions integrate.
Many non South Asian muslims and people of other religions tend not to adhere so closely to the cultural necessities from their former countries of residence and they also recognise that immigration does require some integration. Most immigrants still retain and observe their religious beliefs with no issue and in fact some have already assimilated into British culture i.e. Diwali.
Having lived in a muslim country that was very accepting of other religions if done discretely, there were churches, temples but no Jewish places of worship. Cultural differences were not too well tolerated. However everyone knew that the culture and religion of the indigenous population trumped everything and any deviation from the discrete was promptly dealt with as were muslims with extreme views.

All prejudice is wrong but there is a total lack of awareness regarding the attacks on jews in this country. The general populace are unaware that there is always a police presence at synagogues during services. Jewish children in Manchester have a police escort to and from school and windows at the school are bomb proof. This has been going on for years. I could relay many stories. This shouldn’t be about Jews versus Muslims but for some that seems to be the case. Jews have been leaving this country and going to either Israel or the USA for a long time because they’re scared. There is nothing happening in this country that even comes close to 1930’s Germany.

I meant there is nothing happening to Muslims here that is in any way close to what was happening in 1930’s Germany and we should be thankful for that. In the present day, in this country, Muslims aren’t subject to the same intolerance and threats to safety that the Jewish population are.

Thanks to maddyone and tickingbird for pointing to the similarities between antisemitism and islamophobia. It shouldn't be either or.
As someone mentioned, the documentary about Muslims in Bolton confirmed the differences. Tickingbird is right about the police presence at Jewish schools and synagogues. That isn't happening at Muslim schools or Mosques in the north west but it certainly is towards the Jewish communities in north Manchester.

It is happening in the NE. One school had 3 incidents
This article about Muslim children is interesting jantrust.org/blog/islamophobia-in-schools-children-are-experiencing-hate-crime-too/
There are EDL marches in our city where it is Muslims who are being vilified.
