PMQs

“The commons was transformed from a bear pit to a courtroom yesterday, when the government’s junior barrister was faced with a top QC.
No contest - master versus pupil.

What Starmer brings to the post is intelligence and a forensic attention to detail. Neither does he raise his voice or get rattled, rather he adapts his tone to the occasion.

He was near tone perfect.”

Full Fact

At PMQs, Keir Starmer claimed that, until 12 March, government guidance had said people in care homes were ‘very unlikely’ to be infected with Covid-19.

Boris Johnson said this was incorrect, but Mr Starmer was correct and previous guidance did say this.

MayBee70 Wed 13-May-20 15:40:34

Johnson, in his speech said there had been consensus with the devolved authorities [I need, unfortunately] to listen to it yet again.

Another powerful forensic assault by Keir Starmer today. Had PM on the ropes on care home testing and unexplained deaths in them, as well as international death comparisons. Lesson for No10 is Boris Johnson can no longer wing it at #PMQs

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 15:42:21

maybee did you see the letter Starmer wrote.?

You'd have thought that Boris might have learned by now that it's a good idea to have done some preparation before facing Keir Starmer #PMQs

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 15:47:25

No wonder Smogg is desperate to get parliament back, so that at least the braying Tories can cover some of Johnson’s replies with a wall of noise they do so well

But no amount of noise can cover the fact that they are being led by a donkey.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 16:13:32

Why has the Govt stopped publishing a daily international league table of deaths, Starmer asks? Johnson: "International comparisons with other countries, I am advised, are premature". Why publish it for the 7 previous weeks then, asks Starmer.

I think it’s because we are second to top after the USA.

lemongrove Wed 13-May-20 16:28:28

WWM2 you seem to be filling the gap left by a certain person from Durham ( in your many posts.)wink

Starmer is just about doing ok in pmq’s but let’s not go overboard!

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 16:36:11

I don’t understand your first sentence lemon

I’m not going overboard believe me, there is so much more I could post, but I refrain from doing so in order to protect your sensibilities!

lemongrove Wed 13-May-20 16:41:01

How soon we forget grin
My sensibilities can take it, (I think ) ?and I also think Starmer has a long way to go, and will likely grow into his role.Let’s not go overboard / gild the lily/ over egg the pudding, as to his capabilities though, until he has done a lot more.

Jabberwok Wed 13-May-20 16:49:14

I understand your first sentence Lemon perfectly!!! wink
Agree with you about K.S, however, it's so easy to criticise safe in the knowledge that you are never going to have to make these immensely difficult decisions.. N.S in Scotland is coming under fire for care home deaths especially on Skye. I almost felt sorry for her!

Firecracker123 Wed 13-May-20 16:50:30

Well I expect that Starmer has had nothing else to do all week but prepare for his big moment at PMQs unlike the PM who has been running the country during this Coronavirus pandemic with all that entails, also dealing with Brexit negotiations etc.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 16:54:48

I’m happy the at long last Johnson’s lies are being called out, and recorded in Hansard.

That alone is a full time job.

Jabberwok Wed 13-May-20 17:02:41

Exactly Firecracker 123! When you are faced with a situation that is without precedent that you and your team are solely responsible for, being right all the time is a tall order! So easy for those who are not responsible to criticise, like armchair Generals on here! I doubt any government would have run this appalling virus effortlessly!

The lesson was delivered last week. And, after this week's repeat, clearly ignored. It could be the PM just doesn't have it in him to be prepared for this sort of questioning.

Jabberwok Wed 13-May-20 17:05:06

Ummmm. Talking of lies Jimmy Saville comes to mind! But then all politicians lie, even saintly old Jeremy!!

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 17:06:36

jabberwok what is it you want to say about Saville?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 17:20:06

Most people would have a lot of catching up to do if they want to emulate the level of Johnson’s lies.

“really shocked that the PM who was sacked from The Times for lying and sacked from the cabinet for lying and then did quite a lot of other lying has been asked to correct what he said in #PMQs because he was [ checks notes ] lying”

growstuff Wed 13-May-20 18:31:53

It's the difference between a barrister and a former journalist, who was paid to write waffle by the column inch.

MaizieD Wed 13-May-20 18:44:10

I'm enjoying these rather pathetic attempts to smear Starmer coming from the supporters of the man who has been twice sacked for lying, has cheated on all his wives, who doesn't exactly know how many children he has, who lied to the Queen, who was all ready to help a 'friend' (who later spent some time in one of Her Majesty's prisons) organise a punishment beating for a journalist who was asking awkward questions, who ignored 'the science' when told not to shake hands with people and consequently contracted C-19, who shook off his minder to go to a Russian oligarch's party when Foreign Minister, who took the threat from the C-19 pandemic so lightly that he missed 5 COBRA meetings (some of them while sorting out his rather squalid personal affairs), who can't stop himself making racist remarks, etc. etc. etc....

hmm

lemongrove Wed 13-May-20 18:50:32

Which ‘smears’ exactly MaizieD ( clue! There aren’t any)
Most people think Starmer is doing ok just at the moment, but there will be harder times ahead for him no doubt.

trisher Wed 13-May-20 18:55:24

Oh come on MaizieD the poor man has been busy running the country. Of course it did take a long time to record that speech he made, and of course he can't be expected to do the Press conferences as well. Turning up for PMQ's is a new experience for him. In fact it's difficult to actually see what he does turn up for. No doubt he is very busy behind the scenes where Cummings is busy telling him what to do.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 19:00:15

Starmer will gradually take Johnson apart, one lie at a time.

Johnson is a sitting duck.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-May-20 19:08:43

From the bastion of the Tory party.
Oh dear☹️

According to the Telegraph.

“Johnson was taken apart like a Duplo train set”
