We are wrestling a mugger to the ground and this is the dangerous part. Together, we can do it. Just hold tight for a little longer British people.

I’ve missed his enthusiasm, his optimism, his confidence and his ability to galvanise us for the common good.

He is arranging cross party talks to bring us all together.

Welcome back that man!

Lucca Mon 27-Apr-20 12:53:58

Glad he’s recovered for sure but does that turn him into a super hero?
Also I really think it’s a little unfair to describe trisher’s post as anti Tory rant!
Once again I ask if nobody is allowed to express anything but admiration for Conservative party, Boris, etc on gransnet ?
Did he mention giving nurses a decent salary ?

Oldwoman70 Mon 27-Apr-20 12:54:23

Luckygirl New Zealand has a population of less than 5m UK has a population of around 68m in the same amount of space

Galaxy Mon 27-Apr-20 12:55:45

And Greece. And Germany.

Oopsminty Mon 27-Apr-20 12:56:52

How many people live in NZ compared to us? Is it as vastly populated as the UK?

Must be easier governing a much smaller population.

Quite.

It's pointless comparing us with NZ for numerous reasons, which I think most people will be aware of

Glorybee Mon 27-Apr-20 12:56:57

Population of New Zealand- 4.9 million
Population of Uk - 66.65 million

SirChenjin Mon 27-Apr-20 13:00:48

And a very different strategy helped NZ of course...

JenniferEccles Mon 27-Apr-20 13:04:09

Oh well.
The sneering comments had to come didn’t they?

trisher Mon 27-Apr-20 13:05:49

Death toll in this country will be nearer 40,000 than the figures the government is giving out now. I'll stick to my anti-Tory rants rather than pretend that anything this government has done in the past or is doing now have helped any of us get through this in the best way possible.
"an unexpected and invisible mugger" it certainly wasn't. Unless of course you were Boris pretending it wasn't going to happen and you could walk around with your eyes shut.

SirChenjin Mon 27-Apr-20 13:06:05

You say sneering, I say a healthy range of opinions.

Tomato/tomato.

mrsgreenfingers56 Mon 27-Apr-20 13:10:20

Yes, we need him back at the reins and strong leadership at present. So welcome back indeed Boris!

Galaxy Mon 27-Apr-20 13:14:03

Disagreeing with you is not sneering.

Ilovecheese Mon 27-Apr-20 13:22:36

Second that disagreeing is not sneering. Was reluctant to post on this thread, as didn't want to rain on the parade But I would hate it to be assumed that every single member of Gransnet supports Boris Johnson.
While I wish the man no harm I don't think he has handled this pandemic well at all, and feel no reassurance that things will improve now that he has returned to work.

I would like to see him tell us who are the members of SAGE and for him to agree that the minutes of their meetings should be published.

Sussexborn Mon 27-Apr-20 13:22:58

New Zealand is slightly larger than the UK in land area with a similar population to London alone. Ridiculous to keep making comparisons and ignoring vital facts.

UK nearly 69 million
N.Z. nearly 5 million
London slightly over 8 million

Grany Mon 27-Apr-20 13:24:50

We shall fight them in the fridges

Sussexborn Mon 27-Apr-20 13:24:57

Sneering, and not recognizing the fact, is what keeps the left wing on the periphery of govt!

trisher Mon 27-Apr-20 13:27:17

Ok look at Germany Population 83million Covid deaths 5,000
Explain how we have handled it well now!

trisher Mon 27-Apr-20 13:29:51

Sussexborn what "fact' have I failed to recognise? What have I posted that is "sneering". Actually looking at the realities and not being swayed by the rhetoric isn't sneering.

MamaCaz Mon 27-Apr-20 13:33:34

I never thought I'd say this, as I have never been a fan of Boris, but those who stood in for him while he was ill have managed to make even me glad that he is back at the helm!

Lucca Mon 27-Apr-20 13:48:30

I asked a couple of questions on my post but......

lemongrove Mon 27-Apr-20 14:02:19

Yes, pleased to see that he has made a good recovery.?

Jabberwok Mon 27-Apr-20 14:09:54

As well as having a population of less than London , N.Z's nearest landmass= Australia is 1.000 miles away.
UK nearest landmass = France,is 21 miles away, (not forgetting the connecting tunnel). I think these distances speak for themselves! Far easier for NZ to protect it's borders and its sparse population with virtually no land traffic than us with a vast population and continuous land traffic, again, with the addition of the tunnel! The comparison is not remote the same!

Jabberwok Mon 27-Apr-20 14:10:17

remotely!

westendgirl Mon 27-Apr-20 14:19:19

Surely what we should be looking at is the speed with which things were done and when. It's futile comparing land masses , muddies the waters and does not alter the fact that our government were late getting started.

SirChenjin Mon 27-Apr-20 14:22:07

That argument doesn’t really hold sway for eg Germany or countries in Asia which have it under control Jabberwok

Probably more to do with NZs approach at the start.

Chestnut Mon 27-Apr-20 14:29:14

Cometh the hour cometh the man. Welcome back Boris!
