ug only when they are in your favour?
Whitewavemark2 in regard to your post @07:30 today, I respectfully have to challenge your assertion that Kier Starmer is competent.
Rather than writing articles in newspapers, Starmer's time would have been far better spent writing to the speaker of the House of Commons requesting the recall of parliament to debate the Cummings issue. Starmer could also have requested of the media authorities the right of reply synchronised on all the main television channels in which he could have laid out the opposition parties position to all that Johnson had stated in his prime time television assertions.
The above would have brought an official focus to the outpouring of public anger so well demonstrated on social media.
However, Starmer has chosen to do none of the above and instead did what has amounted to little or nothing over the last five days. Writing this morning in a newspaper with little circulation these days does demonstrate, I believe, no real grasp of a situation that has now mainly passed and a high level of incompetence on Starmers part.
I feel the above writing in newspapers amounts to closing a very small door long after a very large horse has bolted.
I think I’ll allow annie to reply grandad as she will understand exactly where you are coming from with your hate of the current leader of the Labour Party.
I, however, will not take part in such a debate because I am quite willing to give Starmer the space he needs to develop his policies etc.
I am and always have been focused on getting rid of a Tory government, turning inwards and against the labour leader is a treacherous route to take at such an early time in Starmer’s leadership.
You at wrong to do so imo and your agenda is crystal clear.
I won’t take part in it.

“What the opinion polls are showing is that 70% think laughing boy is taking the piss - one rule for the elite and another for the little people. .. Boris ignored that , believing that he knew better about what the little people really thought”
Whitewavemark2 no one is demonstrating hate for the new Labour leader. However, everyone must recognise that the labour leadership has not performed well throughout this crisis and burying heads in the sand and hoping Starmer will perform better next time simply is not good enough.
All of socialist views wish to see the entire Labour movement do well for itself and through that the population of this country. However, Starmer must learn from the desperate mistakes of the last five days and look to make better his performance in the future.
I have to also say that those around Kier Starmer must have been giving him some very poor advice throughout this crisis and perhaps that is the first place that requires change.
Whitewave you didn’t seem to believe the polls last December when things pointed to Johnson winning the GE,
But as we know, the polls were right.
Although I quite like Starmer, have to agree with Grandad that he has missed a golden opportunity to dent credibility of the Conservative Party.
So, why is this? If it’s because he is trying hard not to pander
To party political squabbling at a time of fear/worry due to the pandemic, then I like him even more.If it’s indecisiveness
Or not wishing to make waves for other reasons, or a feeling that he may be on shaky ground with the general public, then it may point to trouble ahead for his future.
Good post whitewave.
The result of Cummings leadership.

lemon if you know anything about Starmer’s way of working, you will understand that he never takes part (as I do?) in the sort of Scenario we have witnessed this past week with the media etc. That simply isn’t his style.
Frankly he can afford to sit back and let the Tories do it to themselves. If he took to big a part in calling for sackings, resignations etc, that immediately gives the Tories a focus to rally against. Why would he do that? He is playing a very clever game and unfortunately for you and other Johnson supporters he is far more competent.
This morning Starmer has called for everyone to focus on the fight against the virus.
He has requested that track and trace is done within 24hrs as he understands that this virus is very catching and spreads like wildfire.
Speedy T&T will help prevent this.
lemongrove, I believe that had Starmer used the powers of his office in a organised manner in this crisis by way of involving parliament and the media, he would have had the full support of the entire Labour movement behind him.
However, he has done nothing over the last five days and that has drawn the criticism of the both large sections of the affiliate membership and direct party members.
Many simply cannot comprehend what action (or inaction as it turned out to be) the Labour party leadership were trying to convey.
If anyone can articulate that then I and many thousands of others would be only to happy to listen.
However, that for me will have to be later, time I began work. ?
Perhaps we should start a new thread
Where is Kier Starmer
I wish it would go on another thread. Its tedious in the extreme.
Perhaps he's gone off on a jolly that's why he's keeping quiet.
Whitewave it’s very easy for a LOTO to ‘call’ for things that they themselves don’t have to instigate.?
...and whilst I agree with you that Starmer is more competent in general, that alone doesn’t make a leader or PM.
lemon yes absolutely. It is called only picking fights that you know you can win. Slowly slowly catchy monkey
Competence goes a long way though. At least Starmer understands what the arguments are.
Johnson is at his best when he can rabble rouse his followers against the opposition, - not necessarily making and sense but make a huge noise doing it.
Starmer is avoiding that platform. Clever
Starmer will only do this if he is reasonably certain of either a sin or a substantial vote against even if he doesn’t win, it will show the strength of unease.
He is no doubt doing the calculations and watching what happens between now and then.
“looks as if there might not be a majority in the House of Commons to support Cummings if Keir Starmer puts down a motion next week calling for his removal
It’s becoming Cummings versus the people“
“Johnson is at his best when he can rabble rouse his followers against the opposition, - not necessarily making and sense but make a huge noise doing it”
Perfect description Whitewavemark2
He is displaying the same leadership qualities as Trump
The percentage who think he (Cummings) should resign or be sacked is going up every time you look at the internet. Starmer won't make a decisive move until/unless it is high enough to prove that he would have the backing of most of the country. No point going off at half-cock.
No point having a vote of no confidence either, until/unless it is certain to be successful. A failure would just confirm he existing government in place and give them more confidence.
elegran and grannywanny absolutely.
Starmer mustn’t give Johnson any platform at all.
No point in allowing Johnson a win of any sort at this stage.
The trick is to continue to make him the obvious loser he is turning out to be and keeping quiet is sometimes the cleverest thing to do.
Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it. Even better is to allow your opponent to open his mouth to prove his own foolishness before you step in.
The sheer hypocrisy of it! Watching the Jeremy Vine show, I have just been listening to Alistair Campbell pontificating about adhering to social distancing whilst criticising DC. Yesterday he was forced to apologise and remove a photograph he had posted on Wednesday morning of himself and a fellow swimmer at the Serpentine, when they were standing shoulder to shoulder. Could it be that advisers (past and present) to prime ministers of all parties believe themselves to be above the rules. A minor breach perhaps, and yes, he apologised, but nevertheless he did it!
I’m not convinced that it would work putting down a motion calling for Cummings removal.
The Tories are nothing if not tribal.
It is a very difficult calculation to make I think.
