So if you're aware that racism is a global issue, why did you claim that these protesters were protesting about something which happened in America?

It’s hard to understand when we are in the midst of a pandemic, and it’s not just here but in lots of countries.I think it’s a reaction to the lock down coupled with a desire on the part of quite a few to destroy things, statues etc and break shop windows.This awful incident happened in the US, and normally wouldn't have attracted thousands here ( black and white alike) to protest all weekend, even when there wasn’t a major health scare going on!
It seems to be a mass reaction of anger and frustration, not only over the police treatment but to life at present.

Racism is a global issue ( and we are one of the better countries) but the protests are about the death of the man who was arrested in the US, which is why they massed near to the US embassy next to Hyde Park.

The black community really needs to look hard at itself, in Washington DC nearly 90% of black males are imprisoned at some time in their lives, over 70% of black children are born to unmarried mothers. Children grow up with mothers that have a negative attitude to men and the only male role models are the gang leaders.

How can a community thrive when the majority of young males have such negative prospects, having been been rejected or ignored by their fathers, brought up in extreme poverty with no prospect of skilled employment.

A statue of Edward Coulson has been pulled down by Black lives Matter activists.

In case you are wondering why. Coulson was one of the leading figures in the tens of thousands transportation of people to the Caribbean including thousands of children.

Thousands upon thousands of people died on the way.

The rioters protesters have pulled down a statue in Bristol, there is live footage on twitter and other online sites. They are hoodlums and I hope they are prosecuted.

I have no time for these idiots, they are not going to achieve anything but more unrest.

The point I am making that nobody seems to take on board is that when the young white girls were abused and raped nobody caused a fuss, nobody protested, it was all brushed under the carpet.
Can you imagine the outcry if it had been the other way around?

I believe racism works both ways.

That statue has been there a very long time.If black people had genuinely wanted to get rid of it ( or white people come to that, there is a big student population in Bristol) it would have been removed long ago.
It was a handy item to vent rage on, that’s all.

One wonders why there ever was a statue erected to Coulson, that said I agree with you GrannyGravy, they are hoodlums and should be prosecuted for the destruction of property.

His name was Edward Colston, whitewave and yesm he did make a fortune from the slave trade and Colston Hall was named after him; it's a concert hall and arts venue and is to be renamed because of his association with the slave trade. Of course, it would not have been built were it not for him and it doesn't appear to have put very many well-known people off appearing there.
He endowed schools, churches, alms houses etc in Bristol and Bristol's prosperity was built on the slave trade.

Of course we know better now; however, we cannot undo the past but must learn from it. To eradicate any trace of it means that we cannot learn in the future.

Missfoodlove you make a valid point.The police in many cases have felt they needed to pussyfoot around race issues to the detriment of doing their jobs, making arrests and keeping young girls ( children) safe.
With the eventual prosecution and imprisonment of the Asian gangs involved, let’s hope they continue to investigate and arrest all whatever their race or colour.

A statue to a slave trader is pretty provocative, and time it was removed.

History can be taught without the need for statues.

History should tell you that those whose voices haven’t been listened to have always attacked this sort of thing. It isn’t new and will happen again.

I would say it’s up to the tax payers in Bristol, what statues should remain and what goes.Mobs taking matters into their own hands never ends well.Still, Bristol has had many disturbances over the years with disgruntled populaces, this one will be a very tiny footnote in the city’s history.

Someone has an excellent idea.

Open a museum about the British slave trade with all the statues of those who made so much blood money outlining exactly what they did and how. You could then go on to look at the consequences of their actions right up to the present day.
