There are 1000’s of protesters in Hyde Park as I post this, no social distancing.

When in two to three weeks time the UK Covid-19 figures go up and more people die these protesters will be responsible!

You can suggest it, but you'd be wrong Grandad grin

Jabberwok many Scots became very wealthy due to dealings in slavery, running plantations etc both in the West Indies and in various States in the US.It was by no means an English thing at all.
Further to that many other European countries did the same.

Hardly any serious historian believes Operation Sealion would have been successful. It's widely believed that, having overrun France and Belgium, Hitler wanted a truce with the UK, so that he could concentrate on the Eastern front.

Germany's naval capacity for transporting across the Channel all the equipment needed for an invasion was totally inadequate. D-Day showed just how much was needed for the 1944 landings. Germany could never have supplied that much in 1940. In any case, Hitler wanted to concentrate on other fronts.

In "Memoirs of WWII", Churchill stated, "Had the Germans possessed in 1940 well trained [and equipped] amphibious forces their task would still have been a forlorn hope in the face of our sea and air power. In fact they had neither the tools or the training".

Neither Hitler nor Göring believed it would be a success.

Black people will always be at a disadvantage in a white country even though they were born there

Despite the attempts of various posters to say this is simply an unbiased statement of fact, I still find it an appalling statement by lemongrove.

FarNorth Tue 09-Jun-20 11:48:39

Was anyone on here claiming that Scots were not involved in slavery?

growstuff Tue 09-Jun-20 11:49:32

BTW If you consider that I am "one of the forum members" who dismisses the British war effort, my father was a bomber pilot and my uncle was a fighter pilot, who flew in the Battle of Britain. My grandfather was even given given a gong for his part in organising sea transport during WW2. I was brought up with this stuff.

growstuff Tue 09-Jun-20 11:52:06

maddyone Hitler didn't want to invade UK. Initially, he had hoped that he could have a truce with the UK. Strategically there was no advantage in invading the UK and, in any case, he regarded Brits as fellow Aryans.

lemongrove Tue 09-Jun-20 11:54:39

FarNorth I am comfortable with any posters who happen to disagree with me ( and it simply is an unbiased statement of fact.)

growstuff Tue 09-Jun-20 11:55:50

Black people will only be at a disadvantage in a so-called white country because some people are racist.

growstuff Tue 09-Jun-20 11:56:47

How is it an unbiased statement of fact? If people weren't racist, they wouldn't be at a disadvantage.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 09-Jun-20 11:58:03

Mahatma Ghandi Statue.......words fail me

lemongrove Tue 09-Jun-20 12:00:22

Exactly growstuff you make my point for me ( not that it’s a
Difficult one to comprehend ).Why does anyone think that life here is easier for white people.... because of course it is!

Pantglas2 Tue 09-Jun-20 12:05:32

I suspect white people in Zimbabwe are at a disadvantage compared to black people as are non Arabs in those countries of the Middle East. Will we ever change people’s mindsets?

lemongrove Tue 09-Jun-20 12:08:30

To clump this point home with a hammer ( it seems some posters need it) this country is predominantly peopled by caucasians ( white!) therefore the minority ( black or Asian) will find life more difficult because of racial prejudice.
This is true of all ethnic minorities living in other countries.
We have legislation in place to protect from racial crimes, and BAME communities have all the same NHS care, education etc as anyone else but prejudice will still play a part which makes them disadvantaged.

Jabberwok Tue 09-Jun-20 12:11:48

Appallingly statement?!!! A statement of fact, whether people like it or not!
'You were brought up on that stuff'!!! I find that a pretty offensive, dismissive statement. My father's death in a burning Lancaster, and my step father's incarceration by the Japanese for four long years could never, by me, be regarded as 'stuff ' and I'm amazed that it could be thought of in that causal way by anyone !

growstuff Tue 09-Jun-20 12:13:59

Ah! I get you now lemongrove.

lemongrove Tue 09-Jun-20 12:18:31

Am glad that somebody does at last growstuff ?

Firecracker123 Tue 09-Jun-20 12:20:45

What utter tosh, Hitler regarded Brits as fellow Aryans, I'm sure he would have loved my Jewish Grandmother.
Some people are trying to rewrite history.

growstuff Tue 09-Jun-20 12:21:33

I apologise if I've offended you Jabberwok. What word would you have preferred? The point I was making was that both my father and his brother were RAF pilots. My uncle, who also flew in the Far East, was injured too. My father was only 18 when he signed up and being a bomber pilot was extremely dangerous. Of course I know what they did!

I know about the logistics of invasion as a result of my grandfather's job. He worked directly with Churchill and I remember, as a child, listening to long discussions about war strategies. If I didn't understand, my father would clear the coffee table and use ornaments to explain various battle fronts to me. We had model aircraft all over the house, hanging from ceilings, and I could identify most of them. That's what I meant by "stuff".

growstuff Tue 09-Jun-20 12:23:24

Some people haven't a clue what they're going on about.

A short history of Operation Sealion for the unenlighted:

Hi I just joined and am catching up with this forum.
Valid points about the health risks of big demonstrations, but I think JenniferEccles you're missing the point. The protests have started with George Floyd, but go much much deeper. Britain has a colonial history, 400 years of suppression, exploitation, and slave trade; 400 years of racism. This country has never faced up to its history; children are not tought about the true face of colonialism at school, but we proudly tell them about William Wilberforce. And there are still people here gloryfying the empire.

Jabberwok Tue 09-Jun-20 12:32:51

I apologise too growstuff. I think I was being over sensative, in fact I know I was! Usually I'm not, but these events are my achilles heel, and I guess they always will be! Tbh, I don't think anyone, (even his own generals) knew or will ever know, what really went on in Hitler's mind except wickedness and mayhem. He was truly dreadful.

Jabberwok Tue 09-Jun-20 12:43:29

For the record we weren't the only European country to have colonies or to partake in the slave trade! We were however, the first country to abolish the slave trade, which must be a good thing! I don't think anybody on here glorifys the Empire!!! Or perhaps you meant the public at large? Not sure many of them do either!!!!

MayBee70 Tue 09-Jun-20 13:01:43

Some schools taught about slavery: my daughter taught it at her school.

Loislovesstewie Tue 09-Jun-20 13:02:15

I don't glorify any empire ; of which there have been many. If we all kept to our own back yards I think the world would be a much better place.
