There are 1000’s of protesters in Hyde Park as I post this, no social distancing.

When in two to three weeks time the UK Covid-19 figures go up and more people die these protesters will be responsible!

Callistemon Tue 09-Jun-20 13:03:49

People tend to forget that, Jabberwok.

The death of George Floyd has brought simmering tensions to the forefront, especially in America but I doubt that things will change very much there until they have a change of POTUS.

The one thing I'd like to point out, and I will probably be jumped on for this, is that Martin Luther King was a black icon, a man to remember and I do hope that George Floyd will not be held up as another black icon.
His death was dreadful and should not have happened but he should not be spoken of with the same reverence and admiration that Martin Luther King is.

I.have to agree with far north because we have come along way and writing that means change has not happened and will not continue. Surely there has to be hope rather than a statement that puts black people in a position of disadvantage? I agree with your statement Pantglas, should we apologise for being what race we are?

I don't know if anyone has noticed the naming and shaming on Facebook, of throwing things at police and those who desecrated statues? One lady has lost her job. It's another layer for those who do create havoc at what's suppose to be a peaceful protest, that social media is watching.

Jishere Tue 09-Jun-20 13:15:58

I don't think theres any need for your comment Callistemon is George an icon? Or a man who was killed in cold blood by the people who were suppose to protect him over what a petty crime? He wasn't the first to die like this. We can only hope he is the last but he won't be forgotten.

If any of my employees were photographed desecrating a memorial / statue or hurling an object at the Police or Police Horses at the weekend they would have been dismissed.

I would not want them to represent our company and meet customers face to face!

growstuff, in regard to your post @11:46 today, once more you demonstrate inaccuracies in your recounting of the strategic position of both the British and German forces following the Dunkirk withdrawal in 1940.

As I stated in my earlier post, the British achievement in evacuating more than three hundred thirty thousand of its personal from those beaches was nothing short of a miracle, but that army left all its equipment, including the vast majority of its small arms on those French beaches.

By example to the above, my father was one of those brought off the beach at Dunkirk arriving at Ramsgate aboard a British Destroyer. So as to get as many people on that ship as possible all their backpacks etc had to be thrown over the side as they boarded. For others, their rifles had to be discarded as swam out to the small craft that took them from the beach.

My father was readily put on a train from Ramsgate which took him to Blackpool Sands in South Devon where they were expected to oppose the immediate invasion that everyone believed would follow Dunkirk.

However, when my mother caught up with him in Devon four days after he had arrived back in Britain, out of an infantry company of one over hundred men only twelve had joined up at Blackpool Sands, and they only three rifles between them along with the uniforms they stood up in. Such was the state of the British Army at that time

That stated, Britain still had an effective Air Force and Navy following its European mainland defeat, and that Hitler had to overcome if he was to invade Britain or at least bring this nation to capitulation.

That situation brought about "the Battle Of Britain" in which the German Airforce losses were more than 1700 Luftwaffe (German air force) planes destroyed. The 2662 German casualties included many experienced aircrews, and the Luftwaffe never fully recovered from the reverse it suffered in August-October 1940.

The Battle of the Atlantic also commenced at that time in which Hitlers sacrifices over the four years of that battle where the loss of 783 U-boats and 47 German surface warships, including 4 battleships which included the Kriegsmarine flagship the Bismark.

So growstuff do you seriously believe that Hitler and his national socialists would have put all the above effort and loses into those battles if he had not wished for Britain to totally succumb to his domination?

I also find your "putting down" of all those who took part and gave so much in the above conflicts totally shocking. For Churchill summed up the true mood of this nation when he stated of the effort Britains fighter pilots made in the Battle of Britain, "Never Has So Much Been Owed By So Many To So Few".

The above is an Expression that is still as meaningful today as they were on the day those great Winston Churchill words were spoken.

And some would belittle those words and the enormous effort and sacrifice they encompassed.

Thank you Grandad great post.

Jishere

I don't think theres any need for your comment Callistemon is George an icon? Or a man who was killed in cold blood by the people who were suppose to protect him over what a petty crime? He wasn't the first to die like this. We can only hope he is the last but he won't be forgotten.

Do stop telling people what they may or may not post, Jishere, on this and other threads,
Thank you.

It is my hope that this will not happen in future.
My otiginal post was quite clear and said much the same as yours.

Callistemon Tue 09-Jun-20 14:18:23

Thank you again, Grandad, for another informative post.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 09-Jun-20 14:23:35

Grandad1943 good post ??

Jishere Tue 09-Jun-20 14:37:43

Your post wasn't like mine Callistemon if you don't like my comments then just breeze past. As for keep telling people what they can and can not post when,?
Like I write in My eyes your previous post was slightly pointless.

Callistemon Tue 09-Jun-20 15:25:53

if you don't like my comments then just breeze past

Good advice grin
May I suggest you do the same?

Sparkling Tue 09-Jun-20 15:43:59

Granddad43, thank you for explaining much better than I could what I tried to. I hear they now want Nelsons statue and a with a list of others to be removed, no doubt many homes owned by the National Trust will be raised, until our history will have gone. We must not let this happen just to please a lot of rascists,

lemongrove Tue 09-Jun-20 16:25:53

I can’t see Churchill’s statue or Nelson’s Column/statue going anywhere Sparkling and there may be a long list of monuments that some people want to get rid of, but that doesn’t mean that they will be got rid of.

Jabberwok Tue 09-Jun-20 16:45:14

Apparently Francis Drake is to be removed from the Hoe! Beginning to feel that we don't want to live in this country any more what with one thing and another. DS and DD + families both have their eyes on NZ and Canada. We have family in both, also Australia who, although love to visit the UK would never want to live here again, and not because of the weather or the government!

lemongrove Tue 09-Jun-20 16:55:54

Plymouth Council and the people of Plymouth need to speak up Jabberwok in that case, where did you hear this?

Jishere Tue 09-Jun-20 17:00:40

If you do i will. Have a nice evening??

Jabberwok Tue 09-Jun-20 17:02:53

A petition by Plymouth live is being set up to get this statue removed!
If Rhodes is removed, surely the Rhodes Scholarship will also go? Pity, as it has helped finance so many young students, but I guess the end justifies the means.

EllanVannin Tue 09-Jun-20 17:13:48

Streets will be re-named. What a confusion it's going to be for the postie.

Kapitan Tue 09-Jun-20 17:14:25

Next, growstuff will be writing that Hitler didn't know anything about the holocaust.

EllanVannin Tue 09-Jun-20 17:15:56

I'd remove all statues and melt them down to help the economy. Do we really need them as landmarks in this changing world ?

Callistemon Tue 09-Jun-20 17:17:31

Will the game of bowls be banned too?
It is associated with Drake.

Jabberwok Tue 09-Jun-20 17:18:08

FGS. Kapitan, I don't think that is a very appropriate comment. In fact it's particularly stupid!

Callistemon Tue 09-Jun-20 17:19:32

Intrinsically they are not worth much, EllanVannin.

Drake's status is probably worth more to the City as a tourist attraction.

EllanVannin Tue 09-Jun-20 17:21:50

Even Stalin was removed---in the middle of the night and bunged in a museum.

Callistemon Tue 09-Jun-20 17:23:15

Goodness, I nearly forgot - there's a replica of the Golden Hind in Brixham.
That must go too.
