There are 1000’s of protesters in Hyde Park as I post this, no social distancing.

When in two to three weeks time the UK Covid-19 figures go up and more people die these protesters will be responsible!

Aw, Penny Lane, Liverpool will be going. That's sad. It's named after a man whose name was Penny and who had connections with the slave trade-----as did half of Liverpool back in the day. One pence lane ?

Pantglas2 Thu 11-Jun-20 11:48:43

Mount Rushmore with the carvings of presidents will be targeted next. King Tut will be destroyed and all Egyptian monuments and temples. Where on earth will this end?

Anniebach Thu 11-Jun-20 11:51:32

Your experience of scouting seems nil growstuff

trisher Thu 11-Jun-20 11:55:41

growstuff How come the Welsh can manage it? (the chartist memorial).
I just looked up the Peterloo memorial- not opened until 2019
The memorial to the Tolpuddle Martyrs was 2000. So here's a suggestion let's build more memorials to those who fought for freedom and equality and stick the ones of rich powerful men in museums where they belong.

I think I'll get a plaque made for my home the way I feel right now. Futtock's End ! Witz End.( common )
I'm on the end from whichever way the area is entered.

Taken from a snippet in the Two Ronnie's film. I like to amuse. No Rose Cottage for me grin

EllanVannin Thu 11-Jun-20 11:58:21

Pantglas, it won't end. This is just the start of things to come.

Trouble is,- truthfully -, how will it make us all feel ?

gillybob Thu 11-Jun-20 12:02:18

What about all the (once) grand houses built on the back of dirty money? Are they to be knocked down?

Anniebach Thu 11-Jun-20 12:02:46

Leave the statues and build more for whoever people choose.

Callistemon Thu 11-Jun-20 12:03:43

growstuff the original Chartists' mural, which was lovely and in the city centre, , was smashed to pieces, despite protests when the town centre regeneration took place.

A new one was commissioned eventually, made by the son of the original artist but is very much smaller (10%of the original), is series of plaques and out somewhere outside the city. Lovely though it might be, it's not a mural as such.

Your photo shows the original one.

growstuff Thu 11-Jun-20 12:04:49

Anniebach Indeed it is. Even as a child, I didn't like the ethos. Later, the scout leader of a friend of mine was convicted of paedophilia.

growstuff Thu 11-Jun-20 12:06:37

I agree trisher. It would be good to have memorials to our real history, not some flawed so-called heroes.

I like the memorial to the Kindertransport in Liverpool.

To Blondenana : your post on Thursday 10.10 you say "I think Enoch Powell was right" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you mean about his speech and about the Rivers of Blood ?
I have followed this thread and found some who are supportive about what has happened in America. As far as that comment from you Blondenana you are nothing more than a bigoted racist and you would not know how to approach the problem of racism even after 5 years of taking a course.

All these problems have been brewing for years and no wonder with people like Enoch Powell and also governments now and to be honest all this statue removal is just the start of it. I posted on here yesterday about T.V. programmes from years ago particularly the one where a character played Alf Garnett. Last night on T.V. I heard a black actor talking about when he was young he was horrified to watch that programme and hear on British T.V. a white actor could be in a T.V. show which was depicting humour and could use these words (Here they are and not sure if they should be printed but they were used on T.V. these are the words Wog, Nig-Nog, Coon, Jungle Bunnie.
These are the slurs that black people have had to hear and personally it is a disgrace and a damn bloody insult to their race is it any wonder after years of injustice they have had enough.
I expect someone will report me for those words so go ahead because the truth hurts doesn't it and facing our own comfortable ways and demeaning others is okay isn't it, some of the views on here make me sick and I seriously am thinking it is time to leave this white privilege thread.

Gillybob, no, hopefully anything like that would be completely refurbished and given for decent living accommodation to those stuck in high rises or bad housing. It's the high-rise flats and filthy corners of towns and cities which want knocking down.

If people were put into decent housing it would help enormously and put a stop to any division besides offering an incentive to keep places decent too. How soul-destroying must it be to be bunged anywhere !

Callistemon Thu 11-Jun-20 12:10:18

how come the Welsh can manage it

Well, they can't, can they, see my post above.

Should add tha it as a Labour Council which ordered the destruction despite protests!
The irony.

Callistemon Thu 11-Jun-20 12:11:04

Sorry for my typos and missing letters, I must bash a bit harder.

3nanny6 Thu 11-Jun-20 12:12:30

Anyone who wants to take a pop and my last post be my guest I will answer anything later I am going out to meet up with two close friends that have got plans for a march coming up on the week-end.

Penny Lane will not be going anywhere, as stated by the Mayor of Liverpool.

It appears a number of people are still peddling the myth that the name was linked to the Liverpool slave trader named Penny. This has been debunked by many historians in the area. This lane which existed in the 16th century and the name itself did not surface until some 40 odd years after the death of Penny.

Posts above about the Chatists' mural in Newport should serve as a reminder to us, and that includes the protestors, that we should check our facts.

The mural was demolished in 2013 despite protests by an including Michael Sheen and Rowan Williams.

Good post ?. Don’t worry about your choice of words. There have been far far worse on here.

maddyone Thu 11-Jun-20 12:16:29

Yes I agree too, memorials of the real heroes would be good. The statues now deemed to be offensive should not be destroyed, they should be put in museums with a description of what they did, and why memorials of them were erected in the first place. That would then reflect their complete history, and people would learn from them. We can not erase history, only learn from it and change the future.

moggie57 Thu 11-Jun-20 12:18:20

i think its totaaly selfish esp the ones not wearing ppe.

EllanVannin Thu 11-Jun-20 12:19:40

Joe Anderson won't have a say in the matter Prestbury.

Callistemon Thu 11-Jun-20 12:19:59

Perhaps statues are not a good idea at all - of anyone.

Although they are very handy for pigeons. They are going to miss them.

growstuff Thu 11-Jun-20 12:23:04

Thanks for that info Callistemon. What a real shame!
