I know that Anniebach. Even before I knew about the child abuse, I didn't like the ethos of the scouting movement with the emphasis on obedience to King/Queen, God and country. It's not for me.

The world is changing fast and many of these statues take up great swathes of room in many places and as the population increases I'm sure nobody has a clue who half of them were.
Some of them cost an arm and a leg to clean/maintain whereas this money could be used for better causes.

I know what history is taught in English schools - Egyptians, Romans, Middle Ages, Tudors, Industrial Revolution and then both World Wars.

I would just ask that the commission, with your support, ensures that monarchs whose wealth was built on the back of slavery and empire are also given due consideration during their deliberations.

Otherwise any moves to question which legacies are being celebrated or to challenge the way we remember Britain’s involvement in slavery, will be compromised on the altar of deference to royalty.

Trisher...great suggestion of statues of real heroes fighting for the good of humanity, wanting to end pain and suffering rather than so called "benefactors" who so often turn out to be self aggrandising immoralists living off the back of their fellow man and who really do not give a ff who they hurt as long as they turn a profit.

It’s absolutely fine for you to dislike the scouting movement and absolutely fine that you (presumably) didn’t join the girl guides, that is everyone’s own choice. However the Hitler Youth was compulsory, not totally, but if parents didn’t enrol their children, they were regarded as none compliant and rebellious towards the regime. I’m certain you are aware of this and therefore aware of the difference between the two.

There are 54 million Scouts and Guides around the world.
The Scouting movement t has done a lot for so many youngsters and given them chances they may never have otherwise had.
Some of them are black.
There are no Scouting groups in some regimes such as North Korea, China, Cuba, Myanmar, Laos.

Well, I know they did the Tudors because they enacted a brief potted version for assembly at DGC's school.
It was very amusing.
But then, of course, the Tudors were Welsh.

They did extensive projects on the Industrial Revolution too years ago as I have umpteen photos of engines preserved in a Welsh Museum. We had trips down Big Pit too.
Yes, the Romans, that was another enjoyable assembly.

They have been relatively unscathed so far, schools and colleges have reopened as have businesses.

It's a little unfair to single the Scouting movement out a somewhere that promoted or facilitated child abuse. Like any other institution, including families, sexual abuse will have occurred. The ethos, the uniforms never did appeal to all parents, hence organisations like Woodcraft folk grew up. Our girls did Brownies and Woodcraft and still say they preferred Brownies because it was more fun and well organised. Luckily Brown and Snowy Owl were typical of the women who ran our local troops. Dedicated, kind and determined their girls would have fun.

One of our neighbouring towns has a plaque of the head of a black slave who escaped and somehow got to England.. He spoke at various cotton mills in the north west in the early part of the 19th century. Reports say mill workers listened and were horrified at the hardships slaves endured. Lancashire cotton workers refused to work with cotton from the southern plantations. I wish we could incorporate the negatives from our imperial past, along with some of the positives. Those cotton workers would be my ancestors. England also was amongst the early opposition to slavery. Let's not forget these things in our rush to acknowledge the horrors.

trisher - I think the photograph you have printed here is taken from the video on line of the attack on the police officer. That shows a white man with a baseball bat joining a group of black men who were kicking and punching the police officer who was on the floor.

There is a long history of chucking statues in the river up here in the North. We did it over 300 years ago with a statue of James11 at the time of the Glorious Revolution 1689.

As far as Scouts goes I've had experience with both them and the Woodcraft movement. I preferred Woodcraft. It was there I met the Polish lady, and can I just say I did not equate Scouts with Hitler Youth, she did and it was children in uniforms she disliked. Although thinking about it I can see that there are parallels, swearing allegiance, uniforms for very young children, a pseudo spiritual/militaristic ethos. I accept some people love it I just don't think it encourages children to think independently, speak out and behave as individuals.

It was Iam64 but it shows that it was not just black people involved as has been stated on this thread. Violence is seldom confined to any one race and that should be acknowledged.

Perhaps that is why mine enjoyed Brownies and Cubs but left after a year or so of Scouts and Guides.

I've never heard of the Woodcraft folk.

It is a fantastic organisation which sadly finds it hard to recruit helpers now. It does take a lot of patience and dedication to run a group as one of the most important things is that children should have their say about how things are run. It has a wonderful song called the Envoi which is sung at the end of every meeting

I don’t think Polish children wear school uniform, so I can understand why the Polish lady has difficulty with uniforms. Here in the UK we’re used to children in uniform as almost all, if not all schoolchildren wear a uniform.
We should remember that the Poles have very long memories, they were treated appallingly by the Nazis.
