One can’t criticise a person of colour who is in the public eye , it’s racist

There has been much talk about the slogan ‘Black Lives Matter‘ with many people saying instead that all lives matter. I think it’s a good topic for debate and to gain understanding.
To me, saying ‘all lives matter‘ is to deny that racism exists. It denies the experience of many black people who are not treated as white people would have been. Think of the man who achieved the highest office in America. Would anyone have raised the ‘birther’ question had Barack Obama been white? Saying all lives matter also closes down debate on the issue, suggesting that the very particular problems black communities experience are no different from that of anyone else therefore we shouldn’t talk or do anything about it.
The term ‘black lives matter‘ is not saying that only black lives matter. It means that black lives matter as much as other lives, whether that is in the undue violence meted out to the black community, the discrimination they face in healthcare , employment and housing and in many, many other ways.
I’ll put a link on the next post, explaining why saying all lives matter is wrong. If you only look at one item, please watch All Plates Matter. It sums it up in two minutes. Be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

My Head teacher agreed with me and she was advised of bring racist too. Family were told if they took child in Year 11 and sibling in Year 9 on holiday they would be fined per child by the days missing. They did not go in the end. They genuinely thought they should be allowed to flout rules as their family was in WI. They said it was descrimination as white people's families lived in UK so they could get there and back in one day.
Tooting this is exactly the problem “Until we stop labelling people black white coloured“. Society does indeed label its members and that is what BLM is protesting against.
I also agree with Paddyanne about statues etc. I do not believe humans are so shallow that if there isn’t a statue or street sign marking someone’s name that we will forget about them. Afaik, there are no statues of Nazis in this country but we certainly haven’t forgotten their existence. And is anyone’s life harmed by the absence of a statue or street name? I doubt it.
Well let's get rid of the partial quotes which have been made from BLM and which can have no other object than to promote racial discord. BLM have two statements about families which co-exist and which present no threat to any society. They are
We make our spaces family-friendly and enable parents to fully participate with their children. We dismantle the patriarchal practice that requires mothers to work “double shifts” so that they can mother in private even as they participate in public justice work.
We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.
So it isn't reall about disrupting culture but about supporting extended families which seems to me to be an admirable aim and one which might help build a better society.
blondenana So are you saying that the street names and other types of honorary recognition of Jimmy Savile should have been left where they were to remind people that he was a sexual predator and criminal?
Growstuff why don’t you take on the real problem, police brutality in America or better still Trump. No you would rather go for soft targets every time, as for black footballers taking racial abuse, a few do, but their team mates and the fans call the perpetrators out. However you would rather focus on the few bad than the mass of decent people. Never heard such a lot of excuses for disgusting behaviour. Start petitioning for all the houses taken in the dissolution of the monasteries, better still the way women were men’s chattels once they married and wasting their fortunes. Soon you can eradicate everything.
If they think the British way of life is nuclear families they
Obviously have no knowledge of Wales. Suppose it’s all
London based for them.
Trisher it is BLM that promote racial discord. Surely you cannot think that violence and anarchy promotes harmony. I did invite everyone to look at the BLM website. I still think that their narrative is very concerning.
Calm down Sparkling! You'll make yourself ill.
And you could do with chilling too Gagahgran. Either that or go and take a trip to Barnard Castle to test your eyesight.
Growstuff when you resort to insults you have lost the argument.
I always have a good idea what will follow the words "I'm not racist but ..".

Please tell me more about how racism isn’t a “real problem”

What they want is a seat at the table.
The fact that you feel that giving them that is promoting Racial Discord says a lot about you and your views.
I suppose it really is that When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression
If the powers that be were interested in promoting harmony it might have been a good idea to act on the upset and concerns expressed by a significant number of people regarding statutes that honour despicable people being placed in prominent places in our towns and cities with no mention attached to them of the harm these people caused.
Summerlove don't presume to know anything about me or my life. BLM are encouraging rioting how can that help.
If you don’t want people to presume your views....writing them on a message board might not be the best for you.
Peaceful protests DIDNT help. People mocked.
How do you feel that black people should promote the view that their lives matter? That they shouldn’t be murdered / jailed/ maligned for doing the same things white people do?
We didn’t listen.
People are listening now. I can only hope that enough do so that things change
The problem is, many do not want change
Gajahgran if promoting racial discord means asking that people of all races be treated equally, that proper investigation and action be taken to rectify areas or services where BAME people suffer from inequality and discrimination, like for example maternity services where the mortality rate is much higher, or the justice system where prison sentences are more common, I stand with BLM. Just as I would have stood with the Chartists, the suffragettes and the Trade Unionists. The fight for equality has been a long one and those fighting for it have always been condemned by some reactionary people.
These people appear to have a shaky grasp of history to say the least, confusing Robert Peel's views with those of his father and accusing Queen Victoria of owning slaves.
PC Blakelock tried to listen to the rioting mob in 1985. Like George he also begged for his life but sadly to no avail.
Nobody marched peacefully for him.
Unfortunately I see this "Black Lives Matter" protest going the same way unless the people organising the protest to act peacefully.
This is a quote from the Guardian (liberal, honest paper)
Blakelock sustained more than 40 stab wounds and was left with a serrated knife in his neck by a mob who attempted to decapitate him, yelling "kill the pig" and "get his fucking head on a pole", the court heard.
Despite numerous investigations no-one has ever been convicted of his murder.
MRGUDER. I am concerned that many who are protesting now will have forgotten this in a few months.
We can only feel anger and disgust for so long and there will only be some who will carry on.
PC Blakelock has been forgotten by many I am sure.
Are pregnant black women not being treated with care by the
NHS ?
PC Blakelock’s youngest son is now a police officer , he was 8
when his father was hacked to death.
Not by me he hasn't!
