Won’t do a virtual debate - should be empty chaired. Good news

Urmstongran

Trump. Some good things.

He continued to deliver for the forgotten Americans. Unemployment is at record lows; this year the number of job openings outnumbered the unemployed workers to fill them by the widest gap ever; wages are rising, and low-wage workers are experiencing the fastest pay increases. Fifty-seven percent of Americans say they are better off financially since Trump took office.

He implemented tighter work requirements for food stamps. With unemployment at historic lows, there is no reason more people should not be earning their success through productive work. The rules apply only to able-bodied, childless adults. When we require people to work for public assistance, we not only help meet their material needs but also help them achieve the dignity and pride that come with being a contributing member of our community. Work is a blessing, not a punishment.

He has got NATO allies to cough up more money for collective security. Not before time! Allies have increased defense spending by $130 billion since 2016. And the White House reports almost twice as many allies are meeting their commitment to spend 2 percent of gross domestic product on defense today than before Trump arrived.

He stood with the people of Hong Kong. He warned China not to use violence to suppress pro-democracy protests and signed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act. Hong Kong people marched with American flags and sang the USA national anthem in gratitude.

His tariff threats forced Mexico to crack down on illegal immigration. Mexico is for the first time in recent history enforcing its own immigration laws — sending thousands of National Guard forces to its southern border to stop caravans of Central American migrants. Plus, Congress is poised to approve the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free-trade agreement, which would not have been possible without the threat of tariffs.

He ordered the operation that killed Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. It was a high-risk mission that required U.S. forces to fly hundreds of miles into terrorist-controlled territory. If things had gone horribly wrong, Trump would have been blamed. That risk is why former vice president Joe Biden advised President Barack Obama not to carry out the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Trump did not hesitate the way Biden did.

(All these from an article in the Washington Posts).

I don’t think I’m brave biba. I just see the bigger (non-Democrat) picture. I like that he’s kept as many promises as he was able.

I still think he’ll get a second term.

You are correct- Can't throw the baby out with the bathwater, he has accomplished quite a bit- Not all stuff I support- But to act like he accomplished nothing demeans those he assisted-

Best we can do is get rid of the baby and keep the bathwater-

A nice person could have achieved all that stuff and more...

Although, he does have a very large office staff and I doubt any of it was his idea anyway. He cannot even string together a coherant sentence.

No .. Not here- ? If so, why didn't Obama accomplish more? He could be nice-

Yes, he has, true, but he is so divisive and some of his followers seem more like a cult.

suziewoozie Thu 08-Oct-20 22:04:04

Urm I’m guessing you took your info from an Opinion piece by Henry Olsen. I actually think that long posts like that expressing a partial view should say who wrote it. But either way, Trump is a dangerous evil man who has completely failed the US over CoVID and whose manic rants pose a danger to all of us.

rosecarmel Fri 09-Oct-20 12:01:52

Many of his supporters don't believe what he is capable of, which is equally as dangerous to everyone- For example, pre-existing conditions- They don't believe he would allow health insurance companies to return to the practice of declining insurance to individuals with pre-existing conditions-

Before he was elected, many people that dealt with him in the business world came forth stating they didn't believe he would screw them but did-

On the other hand, while Biden will re-establish our relationship with allies, he will also reset our dealings with China- Which is a huge loss not only for the US but the world, and yet another vote in favor of enabling xenophobia-

Just listen to him coughing!

varian Fri 09-Oct-20 15:13:19

Donald Trump has been accused of muting his microphone to hide a coughing fit as he continues battle the coronavirus.

The President was being interviewed on Fox News by Sean Hannity when he appeared to have trouble speaking before the sound was cut out.

Viewers suggested the “extremely hoarse” Trump may have purposefully muted his mic so those listeners could not hear him coughing, a key symptom of Covid-19.

One of the drugs taken by Donald Trump that he has touted as a potential “cure” for coronavirus was developed using human cells originally obtained from an elective abortion, a practice repeatedly denounced by the president and many of his supporters.

The drug is a monoclonal antibody cocktail developed by Regeneron. The president received an 8-gram infusion under a “compassionate use” exemption when he was hospitalized over the weekend after testing positive for Covid-19. There is no cure for Covid-19, and the drug is not approved.

Urmstongran I am shocked. I know our political opinions differ but to support Trump. Speechless.

Iam64 Fri 09-Oct-20 21:56:04

varian, that is so interesting. I respect those who wouldn't chose an abortion for themselves no matter the circumstances, I fully support women who do chose an abortion.
Trump has a lot of support from the Evangelicals. One of their pastors described him as the most Christian, Pro Life President ever.
Mr T has constantly said he told his doctors to give him Regeneron. I suppose I'm wrong to even wonder how he'll spin this one positively.

I don't agree with Urmstongran but she is entitled to express her opinion.
I thought she was very reasonable and did not attack others for their views.

Neither did Gagajo!

Who is saying that Urm isn’t entitled to express her views? It sounds more that you are saying GagaJo can’t express her reaction to Urm ‘s expressed views. IYCWIM. Of course anyone can express positive views about a man who wickedly and evilly puts people’s lives at risk and whose behaviour has contributed to the death of tens and tens of thousands. And anyone can say that supporting such a man makes them speechless. I though ‘speechless’ was rather mild and understated in the circumstances but there you go

JenniferEccles Fri 09-Oct-20 22:53:20

Last year the world held its breath when Donald Trump exchanged insults with Kim Jon-un, yet amazingly he managed to secure an invitation to North Korea for a amenable meeting.

By doing that Trump achieved more than any other US President had ever done.

It’s possible to be well aware of the man’s faults yet at the same time acknowledge his achievements.

I also happen to agree with him in his decision not to go ahead with the virtual debate for the reasons he gave.

Callistemon Fri 09-Oct-20 23:02:57

There you go indeed.

Urmstongran you are entitled to your opinion and to express it. I must say I don't agree, but - there you go! Others do.
There may be some things Trump has done which may be positive but the negatives outweigh those imo.

We await the election with trepidation!

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 09-Oct-20 23:10:30

If trump is relected I fear America is lost. If Biden wins it will still take them several years to regain the respect trump lost from the rest of the world. It is important who the POTUS is seeing as the USA are allegedly the leaders of the western world, and as we all know, have by far the largest stash of nuclear weapons. If trump wins, the situation in Iran will become even more desperate and the environment is also doomed. The thing is, Biden has to win by a big enough margin so trump can’t say it’s a fix or fraud.

Callistemon Fri 09-Oct-20 23:11:49

Yes and because Trump could get fewer votes but still win.

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 09-Oct-20 23:12:50

Did you know that one of the Nixon Kennedy debates was held virtually? They were in different parts of the country and without any rancour, were happy to do it. trump should learn a lesson or two.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 10-Oct-20 11:43:02

Listening this morning earlier on so things may have changed, but a Trump won’t say whether he is negative - so I think we can safely say that he isn’t and intends to carry out an outdoor “adore me” today at the WH.

varian Sat 10-Oct-20 19:52:46

How the USA cam to have more deaths per hundred thousand of its population that any other country in the world.
