Won’t do a virtual debate - should be empty chaired. Good news

Trump was helped to win in 2016 by Rupert Murdoch's media empire, especially Fox News. Now James Murdoch accuses his father's companies of spreading disinformation.

The Swamp That Trump Built

Just when you think it can't get worse, The New York Times exposes Trump's corruption. He should surely be jailed.

Top US government scientist Anthony Fauci has said a clip of him used in a Trump campaign advert is misleading.

His words that he "can't imagine that anybody could be doing more" to fight Covid-19 appear in the ad to refer to President Donald Trump specifically.

But Dr Fauci, who clashed with Mr Trump before on Covid, was actually talking about himself and other staff.

The infectious diseases expert said he had never publicly endorsed any political candidate.

The Lincoln Project

A group of longtime Republican strategists who have worked with the likes of John McCain and George W. Bush have launched a scorching campaign against the president.

Below is a link to a 13 minute video clip from their interview on CBS 60 Minutes

I admit to not understanding the vitriolic attitude about the American election I have read on this thread. This election will occur at the ballot box and privately as it should. I cannot believe you would want to be confronted about US views in British elections. Some will celebrate and some will feel huge disappointment election night, but the world will still be spinning. Just for your edification, I am not pushing either candidate on others.

suziewoozie Fri 16-Oct-20 08:47:26

You’re right Txq you post demonstrates you do not understand.

biba70 Fri 16-Oct-20 10:17:47

Txquiltz- US elections affect us all, in the whole world. And particularly in the UK, as our Government is selling us down the river in order to get a deal with Trump. Our beloved and amazing state health system for one, our agriculture and agricultural standards in bio safety, welfare, and so much more.

Talking about the earth spinning - well think again- the massive environmental destruction and total denial of climate change by Trump, may mean it might stop not too far from now ... as for someone who is clearly mentally deranged having his finger on the nuclear button- I do think we are quite right to be concerned.

Iam64 Fri 16-Oct-20 20:54:34

Txq, the US remains a huge world power. Trump is unethical, many of the people who worked for him have been convicted of crimes that there is no doubt Trump was instrumental in.

I'm watching the BBC programme on Trump right now. Chilling stuff. Hi former lawyer Michael Cohen gave evidence at his own trial (at which he was convicted and imprisoned) that Trump instructed him to threaten many people.

Trump has no moral compass. He lies as easily as most of us put that kettle on in the morning for our first cup of tea.

varian Sat 17-Oct-20 17:34:43

I watched the first episode of the Trump programme, which was quite chilling. I wonder if it is available to Americans. It would be quite instructive to undecided voters, especially in the swing states.

The USA is a very strange country, so insulated and separate from the rest of the world that even well educated professional people can swallow the lies of the Republican Party, seemingly without question.

"Registered Republican Antonio Sanchez, an architect who arrived in the United States from Communist Cuba, said he supported Trump because he “stands for freedom” and against socialism.

“My two daughters are doctors,” said Sanchez, 59. “I don’t think this could have happened any place other than America.”

I would say that it is entirely possible for an architect to have two daughters who are doctors in almost any country in the world. How can Antonio have become so brain-washed?

rosecarmel Tue 20-Oct-20 20:06:42

"The USA is a very strange country, so insulated and separate from the rest of the world"

It's a NATION of immigrants!!! ???

"How can Antonio have become so brain-washed?"

Antonio sounds like he's brainwashed- He's not- He, like many others, probably became wealthier on Trump's watch, so find it very easy to repeat Trump's mantras (lies) and laugh all the way to the bank-

Follow the money ..

rosecarmel Tue 20-Oct-20 20:08:29

What Trump programme, varian? I'd be interested in watching it-

varian Tue 20-Oct-20 20:19:28

There are currently three episodes of "The Trump Show" on BBC i-player.

rosecarmel Tue 20-Oct-20 21:26:38

Thank you- The player will not work for me but I found it on YouTube-

I wonder how Trump will react to this - changes to how Thursday's debate will be conducted:

(CNN)On Monday night, the Commission on Presidential Debates unanimously approved a new rule for Thursday night's final debate that will make it virtually impossible for Donald Trump to be, well, Donald Trump.

The rules goes like this: At the start of each new topic area, each candidate will have two minutes of uninterrupted time to talk. During that time, the opposing candidate's microphone will be turned off entirely, making it impossible for them to interject during that time.

My guess is that he might refuse to participate.

From here, for anyone who wants to read more of the article

I found the three episodes of "The Trump Show" very depressing.

I don't know what effect viewing it might have on a swing voter in a swing state.

I hope it would make them angry that the democratic process in the USA has become so corrupted.

Can this be viewed by the ordinary voter in the USA?

Jane43 Wed 21-Oct-20 22:50:36

Yes the three programmes The Trump Show do make depressing viewing Varian. Because the programmes are made by the BBC they can’t be viewed in the USA. I believe they may be watched via You Tube but you would have to be aware of them if you were a US citizen, which is unlikely as they won't have been publicised. I have a friend in Minnesota and I have told her about the programmes so she has watched them. She desperately wants Biden to win but is convinced that Trump will get a second term. I fear she may be right.

Prior to Trump and Johnson (and Brexit) getting into power, I thought that the West’s voting constituency was now too sophisticated to ever vote a nationalist and populist leader into power, particularly in view of what we saw in 1930s Germany and what nationalism and populism leads to. There are many instances in the modern world which should set alarm bells off.

I thought that the majority of people voted with more than emotion, and hope they still do.

But I may be proved wrong. What is to be done?

varian Thu 22-Oct-20 19:57:12

Sadly, we were wrong WW, There are, as we now know, far too many guillible voters is the UK.

That, combined with our appallingly undemocratic FPTP voting system, has got us into this mess.

lemongrove Thu 22-Oct-20 20:28:00

No gullible Lib Dem voters then Varian ?
You could say they are now all gullible to continue voting for a Party that only has a few MP’s in Westminster and can never win a General Election.

lemongrove Thu 22-Oct-20 20:31:06

Many Republican voters dislike Trump, but when it comes to voting they are likely to stick with a Republican candidate.
The Democrats needed a much better bet than Biden this time around.
They may squeak it, but it could be very close.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 23-Oct-20 15:30:45

Apparently Trump failed to deliver the “killer blow” at the debate. Something he needed according to the reporters.

The suggestion is that he will try to pull something out of the hat - like a scandal etc over the next two weeks.

varian Fri 23-Oct-20 18:31:35

I watched that debate and came to the conclusion that Trump had been well rehearsed to curb his obnoxious temperament, ,which he did to some extent, at least in comparison with the first shouting match.

But he still had no answers as to why no-one has seen his tax returns, why the Russians are so keen to see him elected as they did in 2016 and why the USA has the worst record in the entire world of dealing with the pandemic.

maddyone Fri 23-Oct-20 18:41:25

I’ll be happy to be able to watch the news and not see Trump. I don’t believe he will win this time round, I hope I’m right. However, I don’t much care for Biden either, but he’s the lesser of two evils. I’m glad I’m not American, I wouldn’t want to vote for either of them.

Do you mean the American voters are between Scylla and Charybdis?
