How confident are you in a good deal for the UK?

Just that really. Watching the News tonight and it seems there are conflicting views, as always.

Just the same as some of your comments have no relevance to the theme of the thread.

You seem to find it far easier to be personal than address the issue under discussion which is a shame because it then often descends into unpleasantness.

I'm sorry, petra but in effect telling someone 'tough luck' when they have suffered from your vote is not a good look.

You said it in a nutshell, far better than my cackhanded criticism

What kind of country watches its economy contract by the greatest amount in 300 years and then deliberately triggers an unrelated crash that brings down its most profitable industries?

There is nothing ‘personal’ from Petra in reminding you
whitewave that your comments have no relevance to the theme of the thread.

It seems that Remainers are still enjoying a good old moan about leaving ( we left almost a year ago).
Now it’s all about possible lorry queues and shortages.....and yes, that may happen, but short term pain for long term gains.
Better to have a clean break now if we don’t get a good deal.
I have always thought we would get a deal, but not worth it at any price, and am still happy ( very) that we have left the huge corrupt system that’s the EU.

Alegrias2 Sun 06-Dec-20 17:48:59

I have seen some nasty stuff on GN lately but your comment takes some beating petra.

DH has always had a theory that Brexit was being driven by people looking at what others were getting out of our EU membership and being driven by jealousy, and it looks like he is right.

And I've got no time for the platitudes about moaning remainers any more, just leave it out. Its too serious for this sh*t.

MayBee70 Sun 06-Dec-20 17:53:16

It won't be a 'clean break'. We have to have a deal of some kind. We can't trade on WTO terms forever. So there's no such thing as no deal or the fictitious Australia deal. We have to have a deal with our closest trading partners.

That is so right!

Whatever spin (lies) they put out, no deal simply is not an option.

There will be deal, and they know it

lemongrove Sun 06-Dec-20 18:03:55

Well Alegrias you’ll just have to get used to it, we have left the EU and that’s that.
Moaning on ad nauseam is tedious in the extreme.
Still, when the Sainted Sturgeon becomes President of the EU
And Scotland is a vassal to them you can perhaps celebrate.

Urmstongran Sun 06-Dec-20 18:07:56

Those who voted Remain will always moan Alegrias2 because the referendum vote didn’t go their way. It as a close call. The country is still divided. It will only heal if and when the UK do well.

Those of us who voted to Leave will be more accepting of some bumps in the road. Remain voters? Not so much - if at all.

These moany threads will still be up and running 12 months from now!

mcem Sun 06-Dec-20 18:10:49

lemongrove trots out her mantra about being patient while firecracker will refuse to vote for BJ and singlehandedly bring down the red wall.
Utterly illogical and not one single advantage stated, apart from 'regaining sovereignty'.
A virtually meaningless set of soundbites.

Maybe we should be pointing out that rabidity does not guarantee significant success.

Meanwhile the majority will have to suffer the consequences of the (choose as appropriate) ill-informed/naive/bigoted minority (as has shown up in countless polls).

Look on the bright side. The Swiss frank is no longer pegged to the euro. And why is this: some say your banks have no faith in the longevity of the euro. They aren't alone.

Not sure if you are just nasty, insensitive, or not very 'au fait'.

We do not get our pension in Swiss francs- which is indeed very strong- but in Pounds Sterling. British pensioners who have retired to the EU have been hit badly due to exchange rates- but for those of us in Switzerland, it has been much worse- because the Swiss franc is so high. Since our move, about 60% less. Every time Sterling falls, and with No Deal it will fall big time- the Swiss France goes up. The differential is massive- something we could never ever anticipate 11 years ago when we made the move. Never ever could we imagine the Health Care reciprocity would be lost either. Yes, the £1000 per month (about 500 each) is the real cost of insurance here- BASIC insurance, the cheapest. Which we did not have to pay until now.

I know it is hard to fathom- perhaps for some more than others.

biba70 Sun 06-Dec-20 18:14:28

Logging off- enough is enough.

Casdon Sun 06-Dec-20 18:20:08

I think this post should be resurrected a year from now, much humble pie will be consumed by then, albeit some will choke on it.

Urmstongran Sun 06-Dec-20 18:23:56

You’re probably right Casdon.
It will be very interesting to see who exactly will be eating that pie!

Emotions seem to be running high this evening, probably because the Brexit negotiations are almost at conclusion and could go either way.

Ecogran13 Sun 06-Dec-20 18:42:32

We’re on the precipice of a Libertarian nightmare. L’s believe in a completely free market free of restraints or reforms such as minimum wage, welfare rights ( ours, animals or land) and work based rights such as minimum or maximum hours. The NHS will be further eroded with personal insurance the preferred ideal. If you want a good read try the Kosh Brothers, the original modern Libertarians.

Oh dear Petra pensions is a sore spot ,UK pensions are the lowest in Europe .Westminster was told to raise them ,they decided to Brexit instead.Westminster is to blame and ONLY Westminster for the state teh UK is in,the Waspi situation for instance . As a waspi woman I've lost £ 52,000 th e EU were never responsible for pensions add that to the tens of thousands my business has lost during the pandemic and throw Brexit in the mix and life will be much harder than we had bargained on ..and there are millions just like us .So thanks for that !!

MayBee70 Sun 06-Dec-20 18:43:29

Whatever happens we won’t have a deal as good as the one we already had. Not that some people will ever admit that. Urmston gran: how do your friends and neighbours round your holiday home feel about only being able to stay in their holiday homes for 90 days? Did they all vote for brexit?

Alegrias2 Sun 06-Dec-20 18:43:37

It's like prodding a nest of smug, triumphalist little wasps, goading them to come out with their nasty, overworked little clichés. Moaning, get used to it, we won, Scotland, yada, yada, yada....

Works every time. ?‍♀‍

I think this is where you tell me I'm getting over excited, isn't it?

lemongrove Sun 06-Dec-20 18:46:01

The same old insults mcem ?

lemongrove Sun 06-Dec-20 18:47:58

Over excited aren’t the words I would use Alegrias ( that’s too harmless an expression for your own nasty little post.)

lemongrove Sun 06-Dec-20 18:49:22

Never mind though.....if the SNP get their way you will be out of the EU and out of the UK as well.

Urmstongran Sun 06-Dec-20 18:50:43

We all know about the 183 day restrictions MawBee and now 90 days out of 180 will (might) get enforced. It was always the deal. Most of my friends in Spain have taken residencia and pay tax to Spain where applicable. Others (like me) just visit our holiday homes and pay tax in the UK. Some voted Remain. Some Leave. A mixed bag really.

Alegrias2 Sun 06-Dec-20 18:51:41

Oh no! - I'm cut to the quick by your superior debating skills. hmm

Urmstongran Sun 06-Dec-20 18:53:38

Let’s try to keep this less febrile tonight eh? A bit of civility costs nothing.
