New EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

I thought this deserved its own thread. This deal is about to be announced and I’ve just heard Farage on the radio claiming it will be sellout. Trying to stir the pot already. Just wondered how it will be spun. There will be a lot of relieved businesses and relief that there is no deal at least.

Well you need to stop reading right wing Tory mouthpieces if that’s what they are saying about Erasmus.

Nezumi65 Sun 27-Dec-20 10:56:32

As usual the Irish press gives more insight into what the loss of Erasmus means for the U.K. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/erasmus-exchanges-another-senseless-casualty-of-brexit-1.4443940

It really is time to move onwards and upwards.

Rishi Sunak PM in-waiting

The average leave voter will not give a toss about Erasmus, on account of they’ve never even heard of it ( I doubt many remain voters had heard of it either )
How many people have children who go to university abroad? Many have children who don’t go to university at all!
Percentage wise probably less than 10%.
It’s a non issue with the vast majority of people.

You dont understand the erasmus programme. It was for primary school children as well. My local school and its parents are very upset by its loss.

Nezumi65 Sun 27-Dec-20 11:17:38

Erasmus wasn’t just for university students though - that’s why it is such a loss.

seamstress Sun 27-Dec-20 11:21:33

Erasmus was stopped out of spite - they could have continued with it.

JenniferEccles Sun 27-Dec-20 11:23:00

Oh dear ‘gammons’
What a horrible expression.
Imagine the outcry if comments were made regarding certain other skin colours?

UK Chancellors have not had much success as PM for a very long time, probably not a great career move

Very interesting to read the released papers with Margaret Thatchers comments on the EU. A lot of people who voted Leave did so for similar reasons.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 27-Dec-20 11:53:22

This is interesting

Nearly half of parents have a child who goes to university. Most of them had an opportunity to participate in Erasmus. In any case, Erasmus wasn't just for university students. Apprentices could take part and many primary schools took part in Erasmus programmes. It also involved hosting Europeans.

The new scheme is nowhere near as inclusive and students will be required to contribute financially, thus ensuring that those from low income families don't participate. There is no provision for any of the other schemes.

This is more to do with cutting off networking with Europe and ensuring young people don't get infected with pesky European ideas.

‘Gammons’ is an extremely derogatory term used against white people.
Shows that poster up for what he/she really thinks.
Disgusting. ( although fairly common remainer speak sadly )

Eire is going to pay for NI students to continue participating in Erasmus.

No, it isn't. It describes a certain mindset.

Thank you dragonfly and Maw. You both voted Remain yet can embrace Rishi Sunak’s hopes going forward.

I truly believe the UK will come on in leaps and bounds now. And I disagree with you MaizieD I do not think RS intends to announce austerity measures in his Budget to be announced in March.

From what I’ve read it seems the Erasmus programme benefitted EU students and UK universities the mos! Our own students will now have the Turing programme. Details to be announced.

The details of the Turing programme have already been announced and analysed. It's a very second-rate replacement for Erasmus.

In the world yes,minus shackles.

Galaxy Sun 27-Dec-20 12:11:23

I cant even begin to describe the benefits erasmus brought to primary school children in my area, particularly to those from low income families.

Firecracker123 Sun 27-Dec-20 12:14:46

I agree Kandinsky it's a disgusting remark. It's a derogatory term for white people. Imagine if we were insulting people of colour.

Gammon is a pejorative popularised in British political culture since around 2012. The term refers in particular to the colour of a person's flushed face when expressing their strong opinions, as compared to the type of pork of the same name.

Got that wrong Kandinsky its a descriptive name for the fat cats in government ,and industry. Flushed and overweight like prime gammon. Not a million miles from the chief clown Bojo ,feeding off the country

I am just glad it is heading towards being sorted. I do not think I could have listened to another news bulletin on it all. It is out of my hands; I am powerless here. We just have to grit our teeth and deal with whatever comes.

I am concerned about the fishing industry - I know in some ways it is a small issue - but it is a large part of what made many people vote to leave: the feeling that our own waters (as an island) were not there for us to fish to the benefit of the UK fishing communities. If I have grasped it right the new rules do not put us on a par with other countries and their waters.

Down the road from me there is a house where they always have a huge union jack on a tall flagpole - they now have a second pole and a second large flag which has part union jack and part EU flags divided by the word BREXIT in large capitals. Now why would you do that? It is all so much more subtle than that and this divisive "camp" mentality has been so distasteful over the last few years. As with everything we need to listen to those we do not agree with.

vegansrock Sun 27-Dec-20 12:28:30

Gammon nothing to do with race or colour- it’s the typical Brexit leader who got all frothy at the mouth when spewing out hatred. The ones who agitated for no deal.

Luckygirl Sun 27-Dec-20 12:29:15

.....or "with whom we do not agree"........ my OH would have had a fit to see my bad grammar!

Nezumi65 Sun 27-Dec-20 12:29:42

England sold half its fishing quotas to Dutch, Spanish and Icelandic companies

Firecracker123 Sun 27-Dec-20 12:33:58

What's the name for an agitated Remainer then lol there seems to be plenty of them spewing out hatred.

Answers on a postcard please ?
